Genius

the crazy guy is right - he's almost a godlike hero. It's a really moving film, Martin is a true anti hero!

Hilarious? No. Comedy Adventure ? No. Moving and strange? Yes.

You'd be hard-pushed to find a more inaccurate synopsis than the one iTunes gives for this documentary.
This film is not a hilarious comedy adventure, What it is is a moving, and sometimes frightening, testament to a tubby, hard-drinking middle-aged man's obsession, and his descent into a Colonel Kurtz-like madness.
It's great, but if it makes you laugh then there's something wrong with you.

Thought provoking and disturbing

A remarkable film about a man who's reasons for pushing himself so hard are not known, even by his son. However, the description of this film calls it a "hilarious comedy-adventure", which is very misleading. It is amusing in parts and thought provoking, but it is also quite disturbing as it documents a man losing his mind to a brain disease picked up from the river. Take note of the 15 certificate, it is not suitable for children at all.

Great protagonist, not so great documentary

Hey,
bought this film following quite good reviews here on itunes. and also imdb doesn't have a too bad rating. but, so poorly made: the camera and editing are often indecisive, not getting to the point: what do the filmmakers really want to say? E.g. why do we see an image of our protagonists promotional poster then cut to a wider shot of this poster where we see it hangs next to a mobile phone advert? Are the filmmakers saying that among evil consumerist advertising, there are also good causes? Or are they saying that the protagonist's supporters have so much money to be able to advertise on a decent bill board next to a rich mobile phone company? The message is not clear.
The narration in itself really interesting and moving but also often indecisively chosen and often indecisively overlayed over images - which is all very distracting from the story.
What a great cause though - cleaning up our planet, especially the rivers - and what a great man, fighting for what he believes in. A story with unbelievable potential. Shame that the filmmakers don't quite yet find their feet.

best documentary in years

Whilst the synopsis says it is a hilarious adventure, that's true, but it is also one of the most moving and thought provoking documentaries I've seen in years. Were it not Martin's son narrating it would have been very uncomfortable and unethical, but it is and this is a deeply personal portrait of a man who is happy to push the boundaries of human potential to let us all see what is possible. Shame on you American talk shows! A beautiful film.

Great watch

Like a cross between every endurance documentary you have ever seen and Apocalypse Now. Thought provoking and quirky.
