Description

Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel star in this dramatic film about two officers in Napoleon's army who violently confront each other in a series of duels. The duels begin as a reaction to a minor incident and escalate into a consuming passion that rules the lives of both men for a period of 30 years. Based on Joseph Conrad's story, The Duellists explores the themes of obsession, honor and violence. This visually breathtaking film weaves a compelling story through to an unexpected outcome. It was awarded "Best Debut Film" at the 1977 Cannes Film Festival.

APPLE'S OWN REVIEW AT THE TOP SHOULD HAVE A SPOILER ALERT!

Excellent historical drama. Filmed in the seventies, this gives us a good look at Carradine & Keitel in their early years. The rest of the quality cast are British, including a young Tom Conti and Alun Armstrong as French officers. A lot of effort was made by the producers to give historical accuracy to this film, with great success, and the film benefits from French location shooting, although the hills above Loch Ness double as winter during Napoleon's disastrous campaign in Russia. The two leads give good reality to a story of how one misconceived slight can turn into a lifetime's obsession. A great film.
