Depressingly true

I can't say too much in a review without spoiling the plot, but let's say it's findings about the world are all too realistic. Don't be put off by either the box art work or the people who watch it, and gave it a poor review, on the strength of that art work - this is quality cinema.

Other reviewers should read a little history before venturing comments

A very clever film : the historical context was perfectly honed. Don't watch this film unless you understand a little of the events of the time : the 100 Years War, the recurrent bouts of plague (50-65% of Europeans died within a few years) and the impact on psychologies at the time. If you can't reimagine that then what you see will seem fantastical. Neither should you watch if you have an IQ below 100 and are just looking for a medieval action movie a la Braveheart. The film plays on a theme that is still relevant today : monotheistic zeal and the inability of the masses to use reason to govern their lives. It uses the contemporary horrors of the time in a way that is sometimes shocking to the modern viewer but wholly accurate chronologically. The denouement is tremendous - demonstrating amply how horrors and fervours are passed from one generation to the next. The last five minutes alone should have anyone of religious disposition questioning its role in their own lives.
At a technical level the cinematography is excellent and in the main the acting also good. Definitely rewatchable.

It was all right

Well done. Nice cast. Message was a bit forced. Well acted. The historical recreations were great. Not really spooky but a good effort. Not sure is was worth the 4.49 price, so wait for it to come down a bit.

Not An action packed or exciting movie

I saw this film thinking that it would be great, action packed and maybe a bit freaky, but it's completely the opposite, basically guys don't WASTE your money on this, just to help you sprnd on something better :)

Very dark............

Sinister, with a fairly good plot. Good fight scenes. Sean Bean plays the part well. The ending was unexpected, on a number of levels. But well worth purchasing.
I can also recommend Solomon Kane.

Solid British Cinematopraphy

This is certainly no Holywood blockbuster but if you enjoy historical films, action and adventure or just have 90 min to kill, this is definitely worth a watch.
A British tale of love, adventure and religious intrigue.

Not even worth 1 star

Really don't know how anyone could like this film, if Seans film career hasn't died it has now.

Highly entertaining historical adventure, with added politics

On the surface this is a pretty well done adventure yarn set in medieval England. You get sword fights, gore, an ecletic cast of well acted characters, and even bubonic plague.
Beneath that though (not much beneath, this film certainly isn't subtle) there is a pleasing political message on the evils of religion, and how true believers will do just about anything to slay anyone they disagree with. As these true believers are the central characters of the film, you'll find yourself routing for the other team throughout. It's a nice twist, and is the type of thing you'd almost certainly never see from Hollywood.
The film also looks and sounds great, which is impressive given the microscopic budgets British film makers have to work with.

Pillars of the Earth with a bit of Boromir and The Name of the Rose

Would be a quite good TV movie but only a fair rental. The red headed guy from TV's Pillars of the Earth, in pretty much the same role.....medieval monk. Plot is reasonable and the acting decent, only thing that lets it down, is that it promises more action than it delivers. If there is nothing else decent to rent, give it a go. Still prefer Name of the Rose.

Gory, gripping and great

Dark, gripping and well acted tale of the plague. I can't understand why this film hasn't received more. The director, Christopher Smith has proven again he knows how to make smart, engaging thrillers. So watch this then watch Triangle.

Screen Death

We all like Sean Bean flouncing about moodily in his old Boromir armour but really he doesn't do very much action in this - which is why I bought it - I thought there'd be lots of skirmishing and battles however there's 1, yes 1.. and a bit. So on that basis I've marked it down. Okay it is a more intelligent film than that and it is an interesting premise for a film - however Sean Bean putting on armour and then not fending off a horde of bad uns is misrepresentation under the sale of goods act probably. SO whilst the violence is grisly and brutal there's not that much of it and whilst the overall tone is excellent particularly the plague scenes at the beginning - overall it descends into a sort of Saturday afternoon silliness - and having Captain Darling as the leader in the village just made me laugh. Sorry, good but not all it could/should have been.

Usual Sean Bean fare.....

........but when will directors realise that jiggling the camera around DOES NOT make the film seem more realistic. It just gives the viewer eye strain!

Black death

It's a bit of a boring movie without much of a plot but if you love just plain violence then this is okay for you

Black Death

This is an entertaining, violent fantasy movie, with parts of the truth spattered across the story like the blood on the face of the main actor, Sean Bean, who acts the role perfectly :)
Its out there somewhere
