Description

In his highly acclaimed novel Never Let Me Go, Kazuo Ishiguro (The Remains of the Day) created a remarkable story of love, loss and hidden truths. Kathy (Oscar® nominee Carey Mulligan, An Education), Tommy (Andrew Garfield, Boy A, Red Riding) and Ruth (Oscar® nominee Keira Knightley, Pride & Prejudice, Atonement) live in a world and a time that feel familiar to us, but are not quite like anything we know. They spend their childhood at Hailsham, a seemingly idyllic English boarding school. When they leave the shelter of the school and the terrible truth of their fate is revealed to them, they must also confront the deep feelings of love, jealousy and betrayal that threaten to pull them apart.

I read the book before watching the movie, as part of preparation for my RS A-Level. The book was wonderful, and I suggest reading it before watching the film as it is a better way of knowing what the film is about. Or you can ignore what I just wrote and watch the film straightaway! A very though provoking, emotional film, which just makes you think about the ethics of life.

this movie will haunt you for ages! deep, depressing, touching, gripping and compelling. not for the faint hearted. I think it's an excellent movie but sometimes i regret watching it because it left me shaken for a long time and even put me off eating meat for 3 weeks. 4 stars because although it's a great movie, i couldn't stomach it.

A new favourite of mine.

A deeply moving, thought provoking and subtle film that is true to the book and beautifully acted. I would ignore the comments that dismiss it as depressing - it is a truly heartbreaking story but it is also incredibly life affirming and manages to articulate just how precious our own lives and loves are.
I read the book a while ago and found myself thinking about it a lot, months after I'd finished it. After recently seeing the film I would recommend everyone to watch it, or read the book.

weird, depressing and dark.

i really tried to see past the darkness of this film, to get into more depth with the characters and the story
but its just awful. i wouldnt recommend anyone watching it. unlike those brilliant sad films that break your heart, this
one is sad but not brilliant. just no.

Beautifully atmospheric but very disturbing

This is a beautifully atmospheric but very disturbing film. It evokes memories of 1984 and Brave New World where it is not set in the world we live in but remains familiar enough for us to feel vaguely at home. The boarding school scenes were all too familiar, not least because some were set in a school where I taught for 24 years. It is never explained how the children came to be at the school but quite early on we learn that the children's fate is to be harvested for their vital organs; to 'donate' until they 'complete', i.e. do not survive the operation. All of this is implied rather than stated openly and the characters seem to sleepwalk towards their eventual fate with only the faint possibility that it may be postponed. It is a little reminiscent of the extermination camps where some prisoners were allowed to live as long as they were useful but their eventual fate was not in doubt. At the end we are left asking ourselves how we might behave in a world where life was extended for the majority but at such a cost. Cary Mulligan and Andrew Garfield play their roles in a suitably understated way. Keira Knightley, looking even more anorexic than usual, is a more complex character but is ultimately outplayed by the other two. The melancholic atmosphere is maintained throughout, emphasised by a beautiful musical score and excellent camera work .. in its small way a science-fiction classic.

a great science fiction story of cloned kids raised for their organ parts. Ok I know this sounds like 'the island (terrible)
but in fact this is quite a tender 'what it' premise. The only problem I had was - if they know their fate - why don't they run away
(another movie story perhaps). The petty jealousies - made more intense by their inevitable expiry dates is sentimental sure.
But when the doom and 'donations' have been made you can not help feeling sorry for these alien creatures; that look so human. Thankfully not you.

Amazing!!!

Intelligent science fiction

Science fiction at it's best can raise interesting questions about the direction of society and technology. It can plausibly show a future that could actually be real, and so do things other genres cannot.
Such intelligent sci-fi is incredibly rare now, - sadly people seem to prefer robots hitting each other - so when one does come along it shouldn't be missed. Never Let Me Go is one such example, and is a superbly acted and directed tale of where medical science could take us.
It's also refreshingly un-Hollywood, which is a truly great thing. In short, if you like your sci-fi full of explosions then look elsewhere. If you like it full of ideas, then this is a must see.

Don't listen to the bad reviews! If you want something abit different than the norm and something that will leave you with a moral question as to how do you measure a life's worth is one worth more than another and how would you decide if you were in either situation.
Different to the usual spoon fed sickly sweet Hollywood stuff that's fed to us year in year out well worth a watch

Quite Different!

Im gonna warn you its a really depressing film, but its really raw, and well acted though the older male character I saw no real connection with.
That said I usually sob at films, this didnt make me cry, its just very hollow in a good way, it makes you think, very thought provoking.
Give it a go, if you have the energy to feel alittle zonked out after it, cause its so emotionally draining.

Beautifully acted and written. Poses some deep questions. Not the most lighthearted of films but am glad I watched it. I think it's trying to say that our lives aren't the addition of years but the way we face life and death. Blah

If you really want to depress yourself then watch this film. It is the worst film I've ever seen. It doesn't get any better throughout, it doesn't make any more sense the further into the film. It's frankly twisted and there are some people who just shouldn't present the world with the product of a disturbed mind thanks but no. I should have read all of the reviews including the spoilers it would have saved me the 2 hours that I will never get back. Still feeling depressed, this film will leave you feeling horrified and it isn't intellectual just written to freak, shock you. Do anything else but watch this.

If you have read the book, which is a favourite of mine, you will find the beginning a little annoying as they skip a bit of the character build up
Having said that once they get to the cottages it becomes a beautiful and well acted film which focuses on the fragility and gift of life

I personally really didn't enjoy the story line of this film. It was a bit weird and fragmented. I wouldn't waste my time in watch the film as the plot isn't realistic even though it may seem it as it's set in the past. However some parts were ok.

Atmospheric, haunting ......

.... and extremely bleak subject matter but a hugely compelling film with some fine acting performances by the three leads. Carey Mulligan has the rare ability to convey so much so much without saying a word and she is backed up by Andrew Garfield and -for me anyway- Keira Knightley's best performance to date.

weird and almost very depressing...you almost want there to be a happy ending...but there is not. Its heart breaking, and reminds you that we are all only human. Its frustarting as you want the characters to put up a fight for what they were unknowingly thrown into as a child. Its almost cruel. I think its a film to see, yet myself i dont think id watch it again...almost every character doesnt crack a smile through out the entire movie. The director, the actors, the novel...brilliant story, and must have taken quite some imagination...a depressive imagination. the three main actors, even the actors who play them as children, gave amazing performances.

Worth watching...
