Description

Martin Sheen, plays Tom, an American doctor who comes to France to collect the remains of his adult son, killed in the Pyrenees in a storm while walking The Camino de Santiago, also known as 'The Way of Saint James'
Driven by his desire to understand his lost son, Tom decides to embark on the historical pilgrimage, leaving his California life behind. Armed only with his son's backpack and guidebook, he begins the 800km historical pilgrimage but soon discovers that he won't be alone on this journey - he meets other pilgrims from around the world, all broken and looking for greater meaning in their lives. From the hardship experienced along "The Way" an unlikely group of misfits are bonded and Tom begins to learn the difference between "The life we live and the life we choose." The Way was filmed entirely in Spain and France along the actual Camino de Santiago.

Captivating

Sometimes a film is all the better for not knowing too much about it. This is one such film. Heartbreaking, yet uplifting; simple, yet captivating; tragic, yet beautiful. One not to miss. Enjoy it before you read any more about it.

The Way

Great Film! Reminded me of a walking holiday I took with my Dad - The West Highland Way. Highly recommend this film and the West Highland way too! We got talking about philosophy and thence forward our thoughts became “ Wayism”. Where there is a will there is a way. The only way is up. Some say there is an easy way. Good ‘ole blue took the Milky Way. No Way!. Way to go. Way up high…

Heart rendering movie, full of fun and sadness. Makes you think life is really too short, and not to live with regrets. Best movie I have seen for a very long time.

Inspirational

This film is truly inspirational. It inspired me to spend time in the pyrenees last year, visiting st jean pied de port, watching the pilgrims walk on through. It even inspired me to walk some of the route myself within the Pyrenees mountain range. A true must!

Well written - well acted

Just a good old film, they way a good film used to be…..story line - acting - emotions, such a pleasant relief from guns and cars and nonsense.

If you like films that are slow, relational, scenic and moving then this is for you. I watched and by the end wanted to experience the camino for myself.

Camino - Worth watching and walking

The film is almost as good as the walk - for sure the friends you meet along the way are as varied as the many reason why the route is walked. The sense of community is very well conveyed. This film will interest you whether you have walked, are thinking of walking or are completely new to the Camino de Santiago. An uplifting experience [Film] and a prelude to what you could experience (including the hardships, of which there are many) for yourself.

This film is most definitely in my top 5 films. The real father and son actors was a great choice. This film really makes you feel like your with them and going through all the same emotions as they are. I would highly recommend this film!

Amazing Film!

This film is just beautiful. Added to my All Time Top Ten which was missing something inspirational!
It's a timeless portrayal of just how easy it is to be unappreciative of the things and people around you.
Sometimes it does take that experience of a lifetime to open your eyes - mine was the Everest Base Camp Trek 2010 and The Camino De Santiago is defintely on my list now! Thanks :)

Superb

To use real life father and son in a film setting is a great idea. A tale mingled with sadness, joy and laughter for the viewer. My film of the year so far.

Real in a feel good way

In the voice of a southerner: 'It's all about the point of departure. Going on a pilgrimage is damn hard work. The reasons for going shift along the way. Perhaps changing the arrival sensation. So watching this is will give an emotional connection between characters and audience. But you know what this was a good movie and well made. The magic realism hook of having the 'ghost' of the son along the way may well be corny but it worked. I perhaps would have liked to see more rage and grief and less light hearted wine drinking: a bit more naturalism. But hey films are entertainment. Striking that balance is hard. Doing that in real life well that's an epiphany !! Great to see that. An Epiphany I mean'.

The way it is!

This movie represents exactly what the camino is all about. It is about finding peace and bringing friendship closer. I am a peregrino myself and this movie represents exactly what it meant to me.

Martin Sheen has lost his Way

I bought this film because I was considering walking the Francigena. This film put me off forever, it is also put me off ever going near anyone who walks these "trails" of losers. Every character was unbearable - and a cliche, the screenplay was totally trite. The acting made one squirm, WHAT mania has enslaved poor Martin Sheen, who used to be a fairly reputable actor, I cannot imagine, as to make him sink to these depths. It was so awful we sort of had to watch it to the end.... This was a torture that no-one should have to pay for. If sane....AVOID !!

The Way

This is a film of great potential. Deep themes of life and death and all that comes in between. But it never gets deeper than a cheap pop psychology paperback unfortunately. It tries to cover too many of life's challenges in the short time available. The most irritating thing in the movie though was the national stereotyping. The Irish writer the dutch drug pusher etc. please…. watch on a wet, lazy sunday afternoon but don't buy.

Fantastic film. Takes you on a journey.

I have watched this film several times with friends and on my own. Characters grow on you. You are being taken on a journey of self discovery. Understanding the inner depths of people and how friendships are formed. Just sit and watch it.

B

Irritating film. Characters are hard to like and totally stereotyped. James Irish guy Nesbit as annoying as ever and film gets worse when he comes into it. Spain looks beautiful and was the star of the show - rest rotten and 1 star too generous.

The wrong way

This is possibly the most boring film I've seen in a long time. A cobbled together set of poor actors with a terrible script. On a positive note, if you are older than the queen mother you may still enjoy it a little.

The way- emotional, thought provoking film

I very much enjoyed this film, so did my wife who cried at times throughout this film. The scenery was beautiful and the cast excellent. Although I didn't at first like Nesbit's character.
For once a film that tells a good story without cgi, explosions, foul language and fake laughter from Hollywood.
This is one film that you should watch this year.

The Way is great

I loved this film. I am dutch so what attracted me at first was the fact that there was a dutchman who was actually portrayed in a good way (with the accent and ways) although it still annoys me that they think all dutch people are stoners.. Cause we're not! But oh well.. This film does make you want to do the Camino yourself. I'm making my own bucket list right now.. It's very inspiring and well acted..
Go watch it!

At Last, american film without cheese.

This father and son team have done a wonderful thing. And, for any parent, this film is a 'must see'. There are still a few Hollywood moments but nothing that disrupts a truly wonderful cinematic journey. It's also a beautifully shot film. I've been lucky enough to visit many of the locations involved, but not enough that I don't feel the urge to visit many more. It made me want to lace up my walking boots and hit the Camino to find my own reason for walking it. Rent and enjoy!

i loved this film (may contain spoilers)

This film shows the bond you share between a loved one, you'll do something you'd never ever dream of, go that extra mile for someone you love in life or in death. This film will show you the joy but mostly the pain of a father when journeying to finish his son’s goal, after he is killed on his walk, so his father decides to take his place. Along the way he joins up with strangers from all over the world, from all walks of life experiencing the walk for their own reasons, and along the way they share common ground or grow to embrace their friends’ journey. I won't spoil anymore because I think this film has to be watched to be truly experienced
