Description

One of the most beautiful films ever made, and the winner of four Academy Awards including Best Cinematography, Art Direction and Costume Design, "Barry Lyndon" features Ryan O'Neal ("Love Story," TV's "Small Sacrifices") as a rags-to-riches Irish gambler and hero-rogue who moves from innocence to self-destructive arrogance in this masterpiece by director Stanley Kubrick ("2001: A Space Odyssey," "A Clockwork Orange," "Full Metal Jacket"). Rich in drama and decadence, this is a stunning, visually opulent adaptation of the classic Thackeray novel set in 18th century England, that Leonard Maltin praises as "exquisite." Boasting meticulous period details, down to the breathtaking cinematography using what would have been the only artificial light source in the era -- candlelight -- on ultra-sensitive film stock developed specially for Kubrick. Co-starring model-turned-actress Marisa Berenson ("Cabaret").

Beauty in its purest form

What an amazing film. This was part of the Stanley Kubrick collection. I had no idea how wonderfully opulent and stunning beautiful it was going to be. An emotional rollercoaster with a score that fits as perfectly as is possible. 3 hrs. Felt a lot less and left me wanting more. Kubrick was absolute master of his craft and this, in my opinion, is his greatest work. I will treasure this wonderful film forever.

Every frame akin to a beautiful painting on the wall

A beautiful film which was filmed using special lenses (designed for NASA) so Kubrick could use candle light for lighting, this is a visual treat, if you like scenic country paintings, that is.
Barry Lyndon is a character we follow throughout, we want him to succeed in his jouney to continually better himself, and by the end of it all we truly come to despise.
It's a long film and very very slow, but has some wonderful performances in it. I fully enjoyed this, but if you find you do not fancy the trailer, then you certainly won't like the film. I feel this is Stanley Kubrick's best work.

Tedious period drama

The fact the cinematography is often called out as being a high point of this film is indicative of how little it has to offer.
Weak and often laboured performances, unlikable characters, and needless exposition turns this into a chore, the best part of which is surviving until the end.

Fabulous with reservations.

Ryan O’Neal is the only slightly bum note in this genuine classic, and after a while, you get used to him and his wobbly accent. Beyond that Kubrick puts not a foot wrong. The music is superb and the cinematography a treat. Only think what it might have been with Terence Stamp/Peter O’Toole/Alan Bates and weep for what might have been.
