Description

It was the last days of LCD Soundsystem - one of the most celebrated bands of its generation. On April 2nd, 2011, the band played its final show at Madison Square Garden. New York Magazine called the concert “a marvel of pure craft” and TIME magazine lamented “we may never dance again.” SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS documents this once-in-a-lifetime performance and also reveals an intimate portrait of band leader James Murphy as he navigates the ramifications of his decision to end LCD Soundsystem.

As a music fan with just a passing interest in the band this film blew me away. Yes, the concert footage is out of this world and the Spike Jonze influence is there to see. But what makes this film so appealing to non-fans is the brilliant insightful interview between James Murphy and Chuck Klosterman. As Mark Kermode said James Murphy really is the 'Woody Allen of Music', complex, contemplative and witty throughout. The line of questioning was a refreshing relief from those terrible VH1 documentaries and the interactions between James and his manager perfectly capture why the band were how they were. Between them they ran the band like Tony WIlson ran Factory Records, all decisions based entirely on gut instinct regardless of how ridiculous the rest of the music industry might do things. As for the best scene in the film... it's the very last shot.

A must for any music fan!
