Description

On November 4, 1979, as the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point, militants storm the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But, in the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, the Canadian and American governments ask the CIA to intervene. The CIA turns to their top "exfiltration" specialist, Tony Mendez, to come up with a plan to get the six Americans safely out of the country. A plan so incredible, it could only happen in the movies.

This is another typical film where I am not sure as to the total accuracy of the plot. At no point ( I understand) did the British authority's refuse assistance indeed just the opposite. Again, so I am told.
The film itself is quite watchable and maintained my interest throughout. A reasonably good film which I would watch again. Definitely worth 3 stars

Glosses over the American/British role in causing chaos in Iran in the first place by instigating a coup, however this film does show the CIA at its most brilliant. One of the most outstanding intelligence operations conducted that is in the public domain with pure out the box thinking that completely fooled the Iranians. It was so successful in reality that the hostages didn't bother maintaining cover in Switzerland and went home straight away having been completely undetected

Incredibly overrated

Not impressed with Ben Afflecks' performance. There is no range in his acting. Got really iritated by the multiple scenes of him strolling moodily and purposefully everywhere. It was more like watching an advertisement for 'Brand Affleck'. Don't waste your money

I thought the film was very well acted and kept you on the edge of your seat. Although its not 100% historically accurate it is however a very gripping drama. With elements of comedy it is also entertaining. The only downside is that Ben Affleck seems to cast himself as the lead in films that he directs. He does however give a very good performance in this film

...judge for yourself. I found this neither over acted nor boring. I cannot speak for its accuracy, I only remember vaguely these events but know ultimately Jimmy Carter lost his presidency over it. The film depicts a very volatile political point in time, although it might seem tame given events that have taken place over 30 years later, it depicts lives in danger, not only American but Iranian ones too, it depicts a life of misery for many people both then and probably now. This is filmland it has to be marketable as we also see from the fake film in the script. So as one other reviewer indicated if you get upset about the inaccuracies then don't watch. Like one other reviewer the last hour really had me moving uncomfortably in my seat so that's a good film for me. Worth a watch.

If you don't know your history.... Good film but coulld have been better if not for the incorrect portrayal of the British and Canadian embassy's role! Again the USA changes the story to make them out the hero's! Ah well artistic licence I guess :(

- 5 Stars to Mendez who had a fantastic idea
- 5 Stars to the Canadian ambassador who has a fantastic heart
- 5 Stars to Algeria that helped saved all the other hostages in the embassy
Nobody else else deserves 5 stars and certainly not Ben Affleck
Maybe the plan worked too well and there wasn't enough material to get the viewers excited but except the market and the airport there was absolutely zero to to get excited about.
Anyway, seriously, if you like the story (and it is it a great/cool story) go to wikipedia and just thank Ben for sharing it with us.
No proper acting, no emotion, very insipid…real shame...

From start to finish, the film was a masterpiece. Very well made. The film had the effect of taking you back to the time of the hostage crisis. Each time you view it, you see something and feel something different. Well worth every penny.

….. on the basis that it's a thriller, not a documentary. Any drama based on an historical event will always play fast and loose with the facts, particularly if it's American. Arkin and Goodman steal the show - well they would wouldn't they - and we have a new catch-phrase in our house (we are all over 21). Good entertainment for less than a pack of cigarettes - surprising historical accuracy about how we all smoked then…. and try not to giggle at the spectacles we wore then.

Not too bad a film, easy to watch as it is what it is. Good acting and a well written story which is not to far from the truth. It is a film and should be taken as such, so I've no idea why the Iranian president is trying to take Hollywood to court over it!. If we all done that because we felt offended by a movie there'd never be a film released.
So well done guys not a bad film.

A stunningly average film that I shan't be watching again as it just wasn't that great. It's beyond me why it won so many awards. I mean it was nicely shot and nicely acted but nice is nice. Nothing stunning or truly gripping here at all.

Huge disappointment. No character development. No real suspense. History re-written by Hollywood (again). Didn't live up to expectations at all. Can't understand why this won so many awards - well I can when you think about the audience this was written for and who gives the awards.

Although ben Affleck seems nice enough and he certainly has skill as a director, this film is not as good as they hype surrounding it. By a long way. Pretty dull apart from 10 minutes but you'll be nodding off by then. Why Ben doesn't quit acting, particularly in his own films, and concentrate just on directing.

It's a shame Ben Affleck had to come so low to win an oscar

I dont understand why this movie won best picture. It as at best slightly entertaining, but even that is difficult to say. I struggled to wach it till the end. It does not engage you because the characters are not well developed, so you dont feel empathy or relation to anyone in the movie, you basically just dont care about what is going to happen. It was superficial, and not even good as a documentary since the it was not accurate. Only gets 1 star from me.

People, please do not take films as fact, they are for entertainment purposes only. Even if there is an element of truth, it is only that, films dramatise real life events, remember a director sat down and thought, how many people can I get to watch this, how can I maximise profit? By expanding on the truth. Anyway, if you believe everything you see on tv, Humanity really is going down the toilet...

Was really looking forward to this but had to turn it off after 10 mins, the constant barage of foul language was shocking. Glad my 15 year old daughter didn't get to see it. I don't know who these so called Film Classification people are, but they obvioulsy don't have any children. In my opionion, more than one F word should autoatically constitute it as an instant Adult 18 film. Disappointed that I've thrown my money to the dogs.

It's alright I guess

I appreciate the direction and acting, it's a good thriller and has some very funny parts too. BUT - as other people have mentioned, it is yet another Hollywood film which praises and glorifies Americans, it also depicts the British turning the group away, this is untrue. The film sparked much criticism in Iran and the Middle East, they felt it was an inaccurate portrayal and it is yet another anti - Islamist, anti Middle East film churned out by the American studios. Watch it to get your own opinion

Admittedly it is a good film, however it states that 'the brits turned them away'! This is not true! The british took them in! And pretty much saved all their lives! But no, hollywood couldn't show the british doing something good for once....
