Amazing direction and ensemble acting.

The plot is about how to deal with changes in personal circumstances, Blanchett delivers a tour de force performance conveying the fall from grace. The supporting performances are strong in particular from Andrew Dice Clay who incredibly believable in his role, I wish he had a longer part and I'm glad Woody Allen gave him this role. He should have won the best supporting actor but I believe he was denied this due to people's interpretation of his stand up routines. I wish iTunes will release the adventures of ford fairlane.

Typical Woody Allen fare, elevated by a stellar central performance

If you’re a Woody Allen fan, you’ll be on highly familiar ground here. It feels similar to many of his earlier films - I was reminded specifically of September, and Mighty Aphrodite in places (not that Blue Jasmine is funny, at all…) - but Cate Blanchett raises it from three-star to four-star territory with a scintillating performance. No praise is too great.
It won’t be for everybody - I can understand why some reviewers found it slow and uneventful - but if you’ve enjoyed performance-driven dramas in the past then do see it.

Hum?

Isn’t this a complete rip off of A Streetcar named Desire? I think ‘yes'

Awesome

I can't recommend this enough - a genuinely incredible performance by Cate Blanchette. No big laughs, just a superb, simple story that is told so lightly that the utter tragedy feels almost like comedy. A perfect alternative film.

Believe the Blanchett hype

Without Cate Blanchett this would probably be a minor film, but her performance is pretty astonishing and really carries you through. Just a really solid film with an amazing lead performance and you can’t do better than that!

Just great!

This film was so much better than I expected! The main character wasn't exactly likeable but Cate Blanchette was such a brilliant actress that she makes you feel sorry for her. Really great film!

Unusual Story Line....Heavy but Light.

Slow to get going..pay attention or you will miss the plot....faster finish..and like a lot of movies lately lacks a proper ending, worth watching all the same.

movie full of dull cliches

This movie is full of "american movie" cliches: all the female characters don’t have more than two braincells and are helpless/need a husband, male characters are cheats, money doesn’t buy happiness, the rich mature guy runs away with the French au pair. yada yada. Seriously? Does Woody Allen needs the money that badly?

Excellent

A very good incite into how losing everything can have a mental effect on your state of mind. Cate Blanchett is excellent and played the part very well. An oscar winning performance. Brilliant movie!

Very disappointing

This film was both annoying and depressing in equal measure from start to finish. I agree with other reviews that good acting doesn't save it

Blanchett's good...but the praise ends there

A classic Allen piece of self-indulgent naval-gazing, with simply too little to recommend it. Yes, Blanchett's good, but you don't feel for her, let alone feel like you're going on a journey with her because the film simply doesn't flow. The characters are under-developed and laughably stereotypical, whilst the 'action' is remarkably unsurprising - everything you think is going to happen, happens, and just as you imagined it would. Generally, I feel I've learnt nothing, enjoyed very little and sacrificed two hours of my life I can't get back.

Rubbish

This film is complete rubbish. A story that doesn't lead anywhere and is boring as hell. Cate should give all her awards back!!

You’d have to really love Woody to like this movie

This is Woody Allen in the shape of Cate Blanchett, and Alec Baldwin, and… pretty much the whole cast. There are no real characters, just Woody Allen in various guises wise-cracking his way through a flat, plotless dispiriting mess. Shame, I really wanted to like this movie.

Just more of the same stereotypical nonsense

Like all recent Woody Allen's films, just a parody of what he once was capable of producing. He just puts a few good actors together, jots down a few cliches and easy lines, makes up a few stereotypical characters and you have a new blockbuster. Cate Blanchet is still a great actress but you can't build a great film with just that.

stunning performances

The reality is that many people don't have any taste for good film and lack the insight and imagination. Its a character study primarily. The unruly eye of the mass are not satisfied unless the film producers have orchestrated some type of over dramatic 3D effects, thrown in some prosaic plastic dialogue, acceptable linearity -and possibly some gratuitous nudity; Thats something they believe is worth spending 14 quid on. Fortunately this film is quite exceptional. And its a Woody Allen film people! Duh! Of course the story line is paired down. Cate's performance will stay with me. The ending is tragic- and makes me think 'OH NO! WHY THE HELL?! NO!'- but I like it. GREAT GREAT FILM.

Oscar winner

An oscar winning performance by Blanchett in this film. A brilliant, brilliant homage to Tennessee Williams 'A Streetcar Named Desire.' A must see.

Typical Allen

Well crafted, filmed and acted. However, and maybe it's just down to Allen's warped view of life - a beginning, a middle and no ending, I came away from the film feeling cheated. I was hoping that in his twilight years Allen would deliver an ending, even if not perfect! After all these years I have to say that his finest hour was his cameo in on her majesty's secret service.

Great acting but miserable

Cate deserves to win the Best Actress Oscar for this, but it is without doubt one of the most depressing, miserable films to experience. If you want an in-depth study of misery and hopelessness - look no further.

Horrible !!

This is the worst movie ever. She might be a good actress but the theme and story's shown in this film makes me want to go ask for my money back . It's about a women or loses everything and rebuilds life . It might sound good but it's just horrible .... If I could I would give it less than a star

Phenomenal acting,poor ending.

Cate Blanchett thought provoking Portrayal of a women suffering great loss and sadness was one of the finest piece of acting I have ever seen, but the ending of the film let the whole movie down.

An hour and a half of my life I will never get back

I bought this on the strength of reviews but I am not sure we watched the same film. This is not about a woman who looses herself and then rebuilds herself. She stays morose and depressing the entire film. I was waiting and willing it to get better but it just got worse total and utter rubbish. Self deprecating at best. Save yourself an hour and a half and do something else.

Woody Allen's direction is great as usual but it's Cate Blanchett's superb acting that makes it a winner.

Thought provoking

Cate Blanchett is a study of spoilt over privilege. A woman who has lost touch with the real world who is as snobby as she is vacuous. i know many women like this and I must say it was jaw dropping in it's accuracy. It is an age old story within a story, Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Very appropriate considering the battering Mia farrow is giving him at the moment........ A stunning movie.

One of 2013's best films

Blue Jasmine is a return to form for Woody Allen, exploring enthralling characters in a fascinating way against the backdrop of iconic scenery. For a film that puts its characters on centre stage, so to speak, correctly judged performances are vital - and this is Blue Jasmine's biggest success. Cate Blanchett in the title role delivers the performance of a career which can be described as nothing short of breathtaking. The narrative itself, although it could have flowed a bit more smoothly, is fascinating. Every element combines to make one of the best films of 2013.
