Description

In the late 13th century, William Wallace (Mel Gibson) returns to Scotland after living away from his homeland for many years. The king of Scotland has died without an heir and the king of England, a ruthless pagan known as Edward the Longshanks, has seized the throne. Wallace becomes the leader of a ramshackle yet courageous army determined to vanquish the greater English forces. Wallace's courage and passion unite his people in BRAVEHEART. Mel Gibson directs, produces and stars in a film combining action, intrigue and romance to tell the story of the legendary Scottish knight, Sir William Wallace, and the love that inspired him to fight for his country's freedom.

William de Wallace was in fact a French speaking Norman fighting another load of Normans over territory and feudal rights. Same goes for Robert de Bruce! Always annoying when the so called "English" get it in the neck, when along with Edward1 they were in fact Normans (Norsemen eg Vikings). For "Freedom" read let's own this land and the peasants who go with it! How do I know this? Well my family were also originally Normans!

I watched this in a New York cinema 20 years ago. I'll never forget the joyous reaction of young black youths every time Mel "took down" one of the baddies! Great film.
As for being historically accurate; well, Scotland was under threat of English invasion. The aristocracy were split and Wallace did take on the leadership of the fightback and gave the English a bloody nose at the battle of Stirling Bridge. Eventually, captured by the enemy, he was carted off to London and suffered a horrific death. Robert the Bruce then took the crown and secured Scotland’s safety with a decisive victory over an invading English army at the battle of Bannockburn. So what if Hollywood added in a view aliens (I mean alien elements). We all know it’s just a movie and not a documentary.
Okay, Wallace didn’t have an Aussie accent but I can forgive that.

Embarrassing

Although well made and well acted, it's lack of accuracy is not only embarrassing to the nation of Scotland, but attempting to re-write history. This may be in the DNA of Hollywood, but it is misleading, and undermines the truth of history.

Clearly has an issue with the English! Far too many films now seems to devalue the true history of the English (may not be perfect but his insight is clearly incorrect).

beginning to think Mel has some sort of chip on his shoulder

Rubbish on every level.
Would also recommend Rob Roy as a far better film

Inaccurate and badly executed historical fiction from Mel Gibson.
Recommend the far superior (but also far fetched) Rob Roy staring Liam Neeson and Brian Cox.

A film I could watch again and again! A great performance both acting and directing by Gibson in his pomp. Wildly inaccurate and overtly Hollywood-ised...who cares when a film has it all as this one does! Just sit back and enjoy it for what it is. Timeless.

Forget the history lesson

So, the main complaint people who dislike this film state is the historical inaccuracy. But it’s not a “factual” film is it? It’s a hollywood film. So on that basis, just sit back and enjoy the story, which is ultimately about bereavement, love and dedication to ones country. The gore is quick cut so not too gruesome and the cast are fairly strong. For a film that is now almost 20 (!) it’s great.
