Description

Motorcycle road racing is the most dangerous of all motor sports. A sport in which men compete at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour on closed country roads. Roads that on any other day service cars, buses and tractors, roads that are lined with trees, telegraph posts and stone walls, unforgiving obstacles when struck by the human body. It is a sport that has claimed many lives over the years – and continues to do so to this day. Ireland and the Isle of Man are two of the few places in the world where the sport still survives. Narrated by Liam Neeson, Road is the heartbreaking and adrenaline-fuelled tale of a family who have dominated road racing for over thirty years. Robert and Joey Dunlop are quiet men from a rural village in Northern Ireland - but racers who risked everything to win. Robert’s sons, William and Michael are two of the world’s leading road racers today, young men determined to continue a family tradition. Featuring stunning action, candid race day scenes and a gripping narrative, Road is the story of two generations of one family that have been united by success, and united by tragedy.

I have to say that I know nothing of the bike race world but the raw emotion, courage, tenacity of these men is utterly absorbing. I was hooked from start to the very, very emotional finish. I cannot recommend this movie highly enough; it made me realise what living a life really means.

Simply Remarkable...

I can just imagine the pressure these fellas felt to live up to the family reputation, but they've done it! This film tells the Dunlop's story and does a great job doing it, very well made. I rented it but wish to purchase now, shame iTunes aren't offering a discounted rate to buy during a rental.

rent 'closer to the edge'.
I have been around bikes since the late 80's and the Dunlop family have always played a huge part in the racing scene. Don't misunderstand me, their talent and commitment to the sport is unequalled and this movie showed me some things I was not aware of.
I would have much preferred it no tot be narrated by Liam Neeson, it doesn't need the additional draw that his name brings - the Dunlop name is enough alone for me to rent this movie.
It is all about that one family - which on its own is not a problem but if you want a better look at motorcycle road racing as a whole, closer to the edge will deliver that for you

I'm writing this as someone who sometimes makes documentary films, has ridden motorbikes for nearly 50 years and who has been to the Isle of Man TT and the Manx Grands Prix a quite a few times. It is really well made, edited and put together. In filmic terms it works well because it has a very simple proposition – comparing two sets of brothers. It also has an extraordinary range of emotion from elation to despair. But crucially it has right at the heart of it, an enigma - why? Riding motorbikes far and fast as I have is one thing but racing them in the way that these guys do is something completely different – it is at another level. Their willingness to face death, the depth of obsession and the sheer ordinariness of the Dunlops all comes across brilliantly well. Fundamentally, these are men who feel most alive right on the edge where there is a very thin line between success and failure. Mountaineering is the same. Although people go on about the number of road racers killed we have to remember that 17 people have died on Everest so far this year, 8 were killed in 2013 and 10 in 2012. Road racing is sometimes billed as "The World's most dangerous sport", it isn't. But it's still dangerous and the film portrays this perfectly. it also shows in a series of poignant interviews the depth of emotion that those in the Dunlop family feel (or those close to it). The fact that it gives them time and space for them to talk about something which is both wonderful and terrible is greatly to the filmmaker's credit. Make no mistake these men, especially the great Joey, are exceptional in a profound way - Joey especially wishing to be known only through his deeds.

Nothing can describe the feeling of being on two wheels, wether it's a motorbike, scooter or whatever. No matter who you are, your past your future. You belong to such a special family. A family where everyone just understands. If that makes sense. 'ROAD' is an enthralling docu/movie of one family & there 'understanding' and love for motorbikes and racing the 'ROAD'.

Watched today, it had my adrenaline going just watching. Gives you a great insight to road racing family the Dunlop's and the rush it gave them and the emotional ending of the two brothers. Not a biker myself but loved this emotional, fantastic, gripping documentary and who better to narrate it than another well known Irish man Liam Neeson.

Even if you are not a huge motorcycle fan this is still an engaging and at times tear jerking documentary on guys who are simply addicted to fear. They get very little glory and more people should know about the legend of Joey Dunlop

In Northern Ireland, the Dunlop family are considered sporting royalty. In spite of the obvious dangers of road racing, I still recall the widespread shock and disbelief when our beloved Joey, "King of the Roads" Dunlop was killed in 2000. When Robert died at the North West 200 in 2008, the whole community was utterly distraught to have lost both brothers. Even if you have no interest in motorbikes at all, this is a film documentary worth watching. It is the story of a humble family and the very high price they have paid for the sport. Video footage from the bike's perspective will blow you away and fellow Antrim-man, Liam Neeson's commentary will tug at your heartstrings. Every bit as compelling as "Senna." MUST WATCH.

Wow! Big respect to the Dunlop family!

I have no interest in bikes/racing etc but the boyfriend (who also isn't) was curious. We saw in the cinema and it is amazing. Not only the closely shot footage of the road racing (which will give you sweaty palms and the hairs on your arms stand up), but the incredible story of a family caught up in so much success and tradegy. Liam Neeson's voice is also perfact and moving as the voice over. A total doc must see.
