Description

PAN’S LABYRINTH unfolds through the eyes of Ofelia, a young girl uprooted to a remote military outpost commanded by her new stepfather. Powerless and lonely in a place of great danger, Ofelia lives out her own dark fable as she confronts monsters both otherworldly and human after she discovers a neglected labyrinth behind the family home. There she meets Pan, a fantastical creature who challenges her with three tasks which he claims will reveal her true identity.

I rented this film but hadn’t realised it is subtitled throughout which didn’t seem obvious to me in the ITunes description. If your happy with subtitles, a fantasy film and some harsh reality it’s a very good film. The only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 is because of the subtitles.

Set against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War, this jet-black fairytale tells of a young girl’s escape into a fantastical world of fairies, fauns and monsters. In juxtaposing political and social upheaval with the rich mythology of Ofelia and the faun, del Toro creates a world in which true monsters wield the gun and the bayonet.
The performances are outstanding and, in particular, Sergi Lopez invests one of the great screen villains with a rare depth and nuance (and, because of this, his Vidal is all the more terrifying).
This is, in my opinion, a perfect, beautiful, unsettling and terrifying masterpiece which requires watching and rewatching.

Dark, at times disturbing and utterly brilliant. This film is so beautiful yet terrifying that everyone should watch it.
