Filmed over 12 years using the same cast, Boyhood is a ground-breaking story of growing up and a unique film experiment. Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette lead the cast as the parents of Mason (Ellar Coltrane), who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. Exploring the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before and set to a chart topping soundtrack, including Coldplay’s Yellow and Arcade Fire’s Deep Blue. Boyhood is both a nostalgic time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting.

Boyhood took twelve years to make.
Did you know that Boyhood took twelve years to make? It sure as hell seems like the movie took twelve years to sit through. A horrible mess of one boring scene after another with the most wooden characters to hit the big screen. Save your money and watch a better movie, one that doesn't waste your time.

Best Film of 2015
Hands down. Birdman is an impressive film, but Boyhood will be watched for generations to come. Linklater does it again, and it’s just perfect.

long, boring, verbose and pseudo-intellectual
long, boring, verbose and pseudo-intellectual movie….unexciting storyline. I don’t understand the raving reviews.

for all parents and teenage kids to watch
Don't expect any action, it is a gentle and loving picture about questions the teenage kids can ask themselfs as they grove up..looking for the right receipt for life. Everybody wiil have to find his own answer to that and this film may be a good guide.
Loved it even more the day after I watch it.

Boyhood
Really good no wonder it has won an oscar the actors are good and you can see the difference in the boy as he grows up I think this film is something that you would only watch once though

Dull dull dull
Yet again another award nominated film which was dull and drawn out. Filming over 12 years, clever, storyline, poor. It had the feeling it could of been something so much better but in the end I was very disappointed and feel like I’ve wasted a rental fee, thankfully I didn’t buy it!

Sounded promising...
As people have mentioned, the production team did well for taking it on for 12 years and it's nice to see Mason grow up encountering many of life's adolescent challenges but the actor is boring and wooden. The monotone voice, the lack of emotion all made me want to forget I'd seen the film after I had put up with three hours of it. Better acting and a stronger storyline would of made this film golden.

Brilliant !!!
One of the best films I have ever seen.
Richard Linklater is a clever guy.

Misdirected
I’ve been told that if you have kids (especially ones that have grown up) you’ll really like this movie and understand where it is coming from. Perhaps. However I don’t need to be an astronaut or secret spy to enjoy Interstellar or James Bond, so I consider this to be a complete cop out.
Through the course of the film the main protagonist (if you can even call him that, as he does nothing) grows up, that’s the limit of his acting ability. We don’t see him have a tantrum, or struggle with his Mother’s bad choices of men, or what he wants to do with his life, etc…… We just, very, very slowly see him develop into a sensitive, nail polish wearing arty type.
Filming over 12 years with the same cast is a nice unique angle, but without any kind of narrative Richard Linklater is asking a lot from an audience, especially given it’s 166 minute duration. I hoped it would go somewhere, but it doesn’t. I wish I could get a refund along with 166 minutes of my life back after seeing this movie.

Everything I hoped it wouldn't be
Stereotyped cliched bad coming of age Americana. Lacking any basis of convincing character delivery or development and far far too long. Scmultzy and missing the point.

So disappointed
I had such high hopes. Great concept and undertaking, but dreadful result.
Terrible acting all around (Ethan Hawke was pretty good). Terrible casting! The boy is awful - terrible actor, no personality, ugly and gross as sin.
How on earth is Patricia Arquette up for awards? The only real acting she does is in a final scene, and it is laughable! The rest is just part of transitional scenes that show how life has moved on.
Seriously, the kids are awful. I fully expected the girl to be the result of another marriage because she looks NOTHING like the mother or father…not even of the same race.
This had potential, and it got lost somewhere during the 12 years.

When will this film end??
This is very dull indeed... Interesting that to film over such a long time... My it feels like I've been here 12 years since the film started (friend enjoying it though) back to scrabble until it ends!

Fantastic
Amazing film about people, life and growing up… Incredible to see the characters develop over 12 years - I have never seen a film like it and well worth a watch. The 3 hours kept me constantly engaged and it didn’t feel long at all. Give it a go - you won’t regret it.

Moving movie experience
I could relate so much to this movie, as a parent and remembering being a kid. (my x wife told me that i should watch this, I too am a weekend father). I loved the time that was given to see
everyone in this movie (parents and children) grow. I know that it was filmed over 12 years, but this film is much more than just a gimmick. I hope it wins awards aplenty and reaches a wider audience. 5 star movie, if you enjoy the journey, which I did.

What on earth....?!
I commend the production team for sticking to it for 12 years but seriously, why?! It was dull and uninteresting to say the least.
Sadly, a waste of money.

Intimate yet epic
Watched it 2 days ago and yet scenes from the film are still playing in my head.
The ambition is inspiring and yet it's very understated.
If you are a parent the imperceptible passage of time will strike the strongest chord.
Excellent.

Waste of time....
The idea behind the film is a clever one, hence we downloaded and watched it....for nearly 3 hours. But, it was a really dull film with a tragically boring storyline and pretty wooden actors. Real shame as it was potentially a really nice idea.

Ethan Hawke….
When Ethan Hawke is the star of the show, you really might have to think hard about buying and watching this film. It’s like hanging about with the most annoying teenager in history for 3 hours and for no pay-off at the end. I would pay not to watch this now. I would pay a lot, maybe double. The soundtrack is woeful and dated immediately. The questionable casting of the antagonist’s is none other than the daughter of the director. Please, for the love of Zeus, don’t watch this crap. You’ll be none the wiser and that’s the point of these type of films.

Overrated
Poor writing poor direction and the main "kid" is one of the most wooden actors you will ever see. If this wins best picture I will lose faith in the academy.

A modern day Wonder Years
No wonder this film is winning a number of awards and defo a contender for best film at the next Academy Awards. Boyhood is a wonderful achievement taking 12 years to make it follows the life of a young man Mason from the age of 5 to age 18. I think whoever watches this film will find parts they can relate to, just like we did with The Wonder Years all those years ago. Great performances from everyone and also a brilliant soundtrack.
