Description

Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia (Essie Davis) is at a loss. She struggles to discipline her ‘out of control’ 6 year-old, Samuel (Noah Wiseman), a son she finds impossible to love. Samuel’s dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both. When a disturbing storybook called ‘The Babadook’ turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he’s been dreaming about. His hallucinations spiral out of control, he becomes more unpredictable and violent. Amelia, genuinely frightened by her son’s behaviour, is forced to medicate him. But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all around her, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may be real.

Decided to watch it based on it supposedly being a very good horror... the first hour is a bore!.after which the film starts...more comical than a horror... poor storyline ... disappointing ending.... waste my time and £3:49 rental!.

A brilliant psycho-thriller!
Spectacular screenplay, directing very inspiring for anyone who aim at the director's chair.
I loved it so much that I had to buy the blu-ray dick to add to my collection.
Absolutely recommend!

I thought this was a great film like nothing I've seen before. The only disappointment was the ending.

Not sure why people think it's good??

I'm a horror film fanatic, and have never understood the hype over this 'horror film'. It's slow, it's boring and predictable. Disappointed is a understatement!

The Filmmakers should be ashamed to market this kind of crap . If you want to spend 90 minutes watching an angst ridden mother and her high -pitched perpetually wailing child then go ahead by all means . This is not a Horror movie and is not thrilling or entertaining in the least .

Uniquely Chilling...

You can't get rid of The Babadook and you also can't get back the nights you haven't slept after watching this.
No jump scares yet it manages to chill to the bone. The atmosphere that the movie brings is terrific. The acting especially from the mother character is fantastic. The only fault I have with this movie is that I wanted more. More of the tension, more of the excellently created villain and more running time!
Overall this thought provoking feature is at the top of it's game.

This movie was the funniest movie I've ever seen in my life and not scary at all (I'm an expert on horror films). Was such a stupid film, why would you call this a horror I didn't jump I watched it in the cinema and on my own in pitch black and wasnt scared. The little boy was really annoying omg. Was just an awful film.

I thought this film was well executed. The foucs on characters (instead of a plot) was refreshing. I judge horror films on how I feel afterwards. If my adrenaline is pumping and my senses are heightened because I fear something bad is going to happen and can't sleep, the film has done it's job. The BD did this to me. Jumps and scares will always be the same (BD is no different). The BD is filmed well, the camera angles and lighting created suspense well. I thought the acting was believable. But as the film progresses it can become increasingly hard to beleive. And the ending is confusing. And I watched the BD in a dark room with headphones on, I'm sure everyone that watched the BD like this would find it at least a little scary

Just an utter waste of time, don’t put yourself out. I genuinely feel gutted I wasted 95 minutes watching something that was labeled as Horror but should be classed as a classic comedy.

The Babadook isn't really a horror film. I watched it twice on this premise and was sadly disappointed as I was expecting jumps and scares. However, what it is about is a mother's descent into mental illness, and how she deals with it. Had I known this sooner I may not been so eager to watch what has been so widely (and incorrectly) lauded as a great example of the horror movie genre.
Aside from the genre criticism, the two main characters, the mother and in particular the child, are so irritating, and have so few redeeming features that you won't really care what happens to them.

Love it! The kid has attention deficit disorder which makes him seem annoying but he is really a great little actor. This could been seen two ways, a horror movie with a boogie man or a gritty drama about a woman unable to cope after the loss of her husband and her hyper active child...very very good!

I'm someone who grew up on horror films, and this film isn't up there with the likes of The Exorcist. Yeah sure it had its moments, but this film made me laugh more then make me jump out of my seat. The kid was annoying (to the point you just want to tape his mouth shut) which didn't help at all. The voice of the Babadook wasn't really that good, it just seemed that they were trying to do the voice of the girl in The Ring. And once you get into the film its like you know what's going to happen. It's getting to a level where horror films are not like what they use to be. To be honest (and please don't take this the wrong way) but other countries seem to be doing a far better job in the horror section.

On first watching this I found it to be very creepy, after watching it a second time I found it extremely sad and sensitive. This film is about the effect of trauma and bereavement and the effect on me was very powerful.

Don't read the other reviews, this is the best ghost film I've seen in absolutely ages. It's a character driven film that really stays with you after you've seen it. If you think it's cheesy then it's because you haven't fully understood it, I'm writing this review 4 days after watching it as I can't get it out of my head.
Don't watch it if you're expecting a shallow thrill fest with pretty models getting killed in a variety of way - do watch it if you want a deep storyline that will stay with you long after you've watched it.

After hearing good things about this film I had high hopes and I'm happy to say it did not disappoint. A genuinely unique and frightening experience, The Babadook succeeds where the likes of 'Insideous' and 'The Conjuring' failed by creating an authentic sense of impending doom, underpinned by a single parent families dysfunction. The sense of isolation and desperation for the protagonists is palpable with the fear factor ratcheting as the film reaches it's climax. Simply put, a fantastic horror movie.

Annoying, unsympathetic characters; a slow, plodding plot. When you don't care whether the characters live or die, it kind of negates the horror element! That boy was soooo brattish, annoying in the extreme, obnoxious and aggressive to the other kids that you just didn't relate to or sympathise with him until late in the movie. The mother was such a drab doormat until she finally started to crack up, that you just wanted to give her a shake and say "get a grip!" If you think this is a scary horror film then you don't know what a scary horror film is, a lot of it was very predictable as well, I knew the book would reappear. There were some really good special effects but that does not make up for a weak script. Very disappointing, I don't know how this got good reviews. If you want to see a good horror film with a brilliant plot and sympathetic characters, watch The 6th Sense, it's such a shame they don't make quality supernatural movies like that any more, most of them now, like the Babadook, are so disappointing. If you like this, you're easily pleased.

Don’t bother

This is without doubt a modern classic, brilliantly scripted and performed to create a chilling horror. Despite its limited budget the director has delivered a taut and tense horror that really leaves an impression long after its close.

Seriously this film was so over rated it took me 3 attempts to finish it. The kid in it is almost as annoying as George from peppa pig, a crying whinging little sod who needs a good slap. I’ve had worse nights sleep worrying about another day of peppa pig re runs…avoid this like the sweet isle in tesco.

The most original and terrifying film I have seen for a while, like the recent Absentia, another gem amongst so many rubbish paranormal films, the central performances are excellent, and the film really creates a truly frightening atmosphere, do enjoy!

This could have been seriously impressive as a mental health thriller/horror, based on the realities of everyday life as a single mother with something like PTSD; she was terrifying at times. But I feel like the 'Monster' as a separate entity, actually made the film less scary, which is such a shame, because the acting and execution was spot on.

The Acting from the boy is gifted the plot is a macabre enigma of the Babadook with a twist that complements the penetrating fear throughout the film, the ending of the film is for the audience with an insight to the realms of depth most predominately in an adults solemn perhaps melancholy mind.

It certainly is original and it documents one person's slow descent into utter despair. Excellent performances from the two main actors. Unfortunately, one reviewer (rosscarpenter90) has completely missed the point; it was supposed to look that way - it's a child's nightmare.

Seriously, all the people saying this is super scary are tripping. Its slightly creepy and if your a parent is just like any normal night in with the kids….i.e. fricking makes you crazy and want to kill em…bless.

After thinking that this movie would just be about some people screaming at a creepy man, I was pleasantly surprised. It was genuinely scary and was fantastically made. It made the woman in black look weak and paranormal activity look boring ( which it was already). It had a slow buildup of tension making you always on the edge of your seat!

After hearing about this film last year i personally could not wait to see this film. Being someone who loathes jump scare horrors i thought this was going to be a breath of fresh air. It wasn’t , its one of the most overrated films i have ever seen. The babadook is creepy ….. until you see it … then its hilarious. It lookalike someone made it out of paper mache and an old hat. no wonder they kept it in the shadows. people who are claiming this film is on par with the exorcist must be possessed. You know its a bad movie when you want the child to be killed off immediately, he’s so annoying. please .. please … please do not waste £13.99 of your hard earned cash on this movie .

Incredibly Distrubing and Creepy!

Once in a while a film comes along that captures the imagination and The Babadook has done just that.
A fantastic premise, great acting and very well executed. This has been the surprise movie of the year, I think. I really enjoyed it.
HOWEVER, and this is an annoying 'however', it just isn't as frightening as it should be. I couldn't help but feel that the characters were just a little too dysfunctional, resulting in a lack of empathy that prevents the kind of audience engagement that characterises the very best horror films.
