Description

Oscar nominated Carey Mulligan stars as a headstrong young woman in this passionate romantic drama, based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy. Mulligan plays Bathsheba Everdene, an independent heiress who attracts three very different suitors: a strapping sheep farmer (Matthias Schoenaerts), a handsome and reckless Sergeant (Tom Sturridge), and a prosperous mature bachelor (Michael Sheen).

A beautiful rendition

This is a beautifully made film. Carey Mulligan portrays Bathsheba as an impetuous, determined, fearless woman. But her head is as easily turned by beauty, as her heart is driven by a passion to prove herself. I had to read this book for GCSE English, and I hated it, until I realised how it alludes to the complexity of relationships. I think this film brings the very best of this novel to the screen.

Exquisite, and respectful of Hardy’s classic.

A lovely, charming film. It is my favourite novel, so I was hopeful that this film would honour it. It does, remaining faithful to Hardy’s classic.
In the novel, a whole chapter (‘On Casterbridge Highway’) is devoted to the dying of one of the characters, and Hardy imbues it with a sense of tragedy, but the film treats with it briefly. That’s a pity, but it doesn’t mar the film.
Compared with Hardy’s novel, the film stands up well; in its own right, it stands tall. The performances are flawless, the soundtrack is perfectly unintrusive, and the script, direction and editing are exactly as they should be.
Oh, and Michael Sheen is in it; what more could you want?
I rented it, but might now buy it.

Good adaptation.

A pale, poor imitation.

Check out the original version… It’s 100% better. This is a poor poor imitation.

I was on a rather long plane ride and this was on the list with more amazing films. I watched it not knowing what I was getting myself into and when I watched it I was stunned to find out that it was the most captivating love story I have ever seen or read. Then after watching I found out the farmer was my favourite actor! This film is now on my top five and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Far from a great movie...

I was massively disappointed with this movie. I love Vinterbergs Danish outings, 'Festen' and 'the Hunt'. I'm also a massive fan of scriptwriter David Nichols's books. Unfortunately this collaboration just didn't work. I've not read the book so I came with an open mind; but the characters were fuzzy, the dialogue corny and the acting ok at best. Mulligans sly smile wore thin very fast. I just didn't care about anyone and therefore tired very quickly, rent something else!

We saw it at the cinema and it was the best film we’ve seen this year. It may not include all of the narrative of the novel, but it is true to the spirit. Not quite sufficiently and bleakly tragic for Hardy, but a very rewarding film. Very fine performance by Michael Sheen.

The best film of 2015 in my opinion and the year's not even finished yet! Superb acting especially by Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts and Michael Sheen. Shows my native Dorset in its very best and most beautiful light. Engrossing plot with a wonderful ending.

I went to see this at the cinema, it is such a beautifully crafted film version of the novel that would go as far as to say that it is just as good (if not better) than the 1967 version with Julie Christie and Alan Bates. I found myself completely entranced by the beauty of the Dorset landscape. My attention was forever drawn to the radiated presence of both Carey Mulligan and Matthias Schoenaerts. Vinterberg has created a masterpiece. 5* rated film.
