Description

Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it's no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley's main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

After the mixed bag that was Toy Story 3 and the kind of meh Cars 2 film, I thought Pixar was on a downhill spiral (Excluding Up and The Good Dinosaur), but this film has to be the biggest surprise for me in all the right ways.
I've been a fan of Pixar since they released Toy Story and I've been critical of them ever since with mostly positives, but, I was worried about their recent films such as Brave and Cars that showed signs that maybe they were losing touch, this proves me wrong.
Inside Out is so colourful and fun to watch that you'll be smiling, laughing and on occastion, crying throughout the whole film. The characters are all great, even the Humans who are what pushes the narrative of the story. The music is fantastic and the story is amazing, it's not over the top nor is it under-developed with some amazing set pieces really showing the real Pixar Magic that I was so used to back during their Pre-Sequels Era, when they'd just release one amazing film and just leave it be.
I'm giving this movie a solid:
5 out of 5, for making me smile and it's great for the whole family!

Great!

A great concept.
Brilliant story line, with a novel way of understanding how our thoughts and feelings work.

I am 12 years old and have enjoy every pixel movie I have ever watched. Inside out didn't seem to catch my eye and within the first 1/4 I was quiet bored, I didn't seem to get the story line. It is quiet confusing and to me it didn't really make sense. I would not recommend this for anyone under the age of 6-7 as it is likely to be to complex. I would see this being a film for 9/12-13 because as I said it is quiet complex.

Such a good film. Pixar have taken a very complex subject and turned it into an entertaining and clever movie for kids. This film actually helped me to have a better understanding of depression and how difficult it can be to 'think positive' when things go wrong in life. This is by no means a depressing film, though!! It's very warm and funny. See it.

A memorable film for kids

One of the most inventive and creative films in the Pixar canon, and great to see they are still taking risks with their work.
Those who say that the film is too sad have obviously completely missed its ENTIRE message, which is that sad experiences can also be happy ones, and growing up contains both of these things.
If you want a film where your kids can leave their brain at the door (and there's definitely a time for that) then there's a million other animated films available on iTunes. Otherwise this is a film that will stay long in the memory and can help parents explain to their children about understanding and managing their feelings.

Me and my family watched it and we loved it. Joy, sadness, anger, disgust and fear all made us laugh at some point in the film. Disgust reminded us of my 15 year-old sister. The story was well animated and the story kept its humility all the way through the film. I cannot see how people didn’t like it. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes films with a bit of comedy and drama especially if you have a 15 year-old daughter or sister.

Loved it!

This is a well animated cartoon and the story follows a concept to its bitter end.
It is also depressing, boring, predictable and darn right disappointing!
I love most Disney and Pixar cartoons and I do enjoy cartoons and movies that deal with challenging subjects but I do not enjoy leaving a film feeling so depressed.
Luckily we watched this film before our daughter as we now can avoid her sitting through this in tears!

I'm a childminder of children who are aged between 1-16 and after watching this I know my children will not understand it and will get bored within five minutes of watching this film,it is more suitable for adults. It is brilliantly made and the story well written ,It is so sad it made me cry and reminded me of the film "up" which was also sad . The trailer led me to believe the film is funny ,but those clips were the only funny bits in the film so I don't understand why they would choose those ones to promote the film as its misleading . This would be a great film to show in secondary school to help students understand their emotions with a little bit of humour.

Kids didn't enjoy or understand it.

I completely disagree with ShaherM's review. Of course this is a movie targeted at kids! What else could it possibly be?
It WAS way too dark and complex for kids. Anyone who wants something dark & artistic should go and watch Terminator.

Once in a while, I see a movie that reminds me of what film is capable of. Inside Out is one of those movies. Inside Out is pure Pixar. It takes an interesting idea, adds some inspiration, oodles of love and care and a little Pixar magic to produce a truly amazing film. Inside Out uses some beautifully thought out visualisations of the human mind’s emotions, memories, etc. It is up to parents with young children to watch it first (without the children) and see if they are happy for them to watch it, but for everyone else, this is an amazing film and deserves to be watched!

Me and my friend went to watch this thinking it would be a comedy as it appears from the trailer, only to be disappointed that it wasn’t a comedy really at all and more serious. I love disney pixar as I’m a big kid!!! but i can’t see my nephew or children really enjoying this very much.. bit of a let down as the trailer is very miss leading! :(

I've noticed a plethora of negative reviews all saying the same thing- their kids did not enjoy/ understand the movie and it was too dark. Yet they also say that the movie was well made and had an excellent concept. My question to these people is this- If you wanted to see a happy meaningless movie with adult toilet humour, why didn't you take your kids to see Minions? Inside out is for those who like quality cinema, to be entertained as well as taught challenging concepts. It is an artistic film. Why do you people always have to assume that all animated films have to be for kids and filled with stupid toilet humour? This is Pixar we are talking about, those who have created Wall-E and Up. Review this movie on its own merits, rather than be biased in your judgement that the film was too dark and confusing for kids. It was never marketed as a film for toddlers and little kids. Kudos to Pixar; it was truly an amazing, advanced conceptual, artistic film!

Inside Out takes the basic premise of what goes on inside our head and executes it with an energy and sophistication that only Pixar can. The central character of the film is also its setting: we follow the emotions of Riley, an 11 year-old girl who literally shuts down after moving from Minnesota to San Francisco. The passion and wit that Pixar tells this story with is nothing short of remarkable; Inside Out is at once boundlessly imaginative and mature in its storytelling; an example of cinema used to its fullest potential. A plethora of psychological phenomena are covered here, including memory, dreams and imagination to name but a few - but really the less known about this film before watching it the better. There is no weak link here, from the perfect voice cast to the unforgettable visuals, Inside Out is an instant classic - and one of Pixar's best.
