Description

Tom Hanks stars in BRIDGE OF SPIES, the new thriller from director Steven Spielberg. Inspired by true events, BRIDGE OF SPIES is the remarkable story of James Donovan (Hanks), a Brooklyn attorney who finds himself thrust into the centre of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible mission to negotiate the release of a captured American pilot. BRIDGE OF SPIES captures the essence of a man who risked everything, and vividly brings his personal journey to life.

Nothing else to say really. A poor film telling a poor and boring story..
I can't believe the person who told me to watch this movie spoke about it as if it's one of the best movies ever made and plot is one the best ever..well... ITS NOT!! and the plot is poor!

Good film as you'd expect from Tom Hanks, well worth a watch, but definitely not an all-time great like Castaway, or Shawshank (for example).

Great movie.

Personally I loved this film, it is a great story. I cannot see how some people rate this film poorly, I thoroughly enjoyed the film from start to finish and didn't once take a break, if you enjoy Tom Hanks as an actor then you will enjoy this. A+

Really enjoyed this movie. It may not have much in the way of car chases and high-octane stunts; but the cast was brilliant and it was an intelligent and ultimately satisfying film. Bravo!!

A suspenseful drama that leads to no suspense..

This film is set in the 1900s+ era, when the Cold War was happening. But this film particular bores with a dull, depressing scenery and suspense that leads to no action. There is good acting and this film is more realistic than most and is inspired by true events, but as a watcher it is quite boring and dreary. Our rating//: PG // Overall: 2.5-3/5. A uneventful take on the Cold War' Not much action.

With a well-judged sense of history, good character development, and excellent acting, this is an engaging film. Hanks is on excellent form, but is supported by good performances from the other principal actors. The sense of atmosphere is convincing, and the whole film was thoroughly satisfying. Recommended.

I liked the plot and how the filming was executed. It's a nice film full of appropriate fear and tension, but an action blockbuster, but a masterpiece that reflects the time and the spirit of that spy swap event.

Dull, worthy and entirely populated by men

The Cold War has been done so often in film, that a new approach is needed and this film sadly isn't it. The potential drama of a prisoner swap - will they, won't they - is somehow made dull and uninteresting, whilst the tension of the Cold War at its most anxious period is also missing. The whole film barely has a woman in it, except the ones serving tea or weeping over a husband/ boyfriend. Yes, the main protagonists in the political drama were of course men and I don't expect a powerful woman to be invented solely to make up the numbers - but there's no excuse for writing and producing a film in which a woman's face hardly appears. This feels like historical drama by numbers, with no human interest.

Definitely worth watching

I love this film. When I went to Germany my tour guide Malcolm recommended it and it screened at the Berlin Film Festival Feb 2016 and I cried (I could see it from my hotel room) when they made the trade*. Definitely worth watching and Tom Hanks is fabulous in it, as always. I don't know what would have happened if I didn't get this recommendation, because I wouldn't be the same. It's made my appreciation and love for history grow stronger. 100% would watch it again.

It’s not bad, but it’s not particularly good either. I give it three stars and that feels a bit generous. It’s all a bit predictable and clichéd - there’s a lack of depth in the characters and Hanks is not wholly convincing as the great negotiator. Mark Rylance is good though as the impassive Russian agent. If you want to see really strong depictions of East European spies then see The Lives of Others or the powerful Deutschland 83 tv series.

Very good watch which harks back to Hollywood's golden age . Brilliant acting , especially Rylance, who carries on his fantastic Wolf Hall form . Well directed , acted and filmed story .
Polished and absorbing , highly recommended .

Had high expectations for this film as Tom Hanks is an incredible actor. However this film felt like it lacked something it needed more to be going on felt like you were waiting for something big to happen. Did get better as it went on though

Engaging dip into a threatening history.

Not unlike how Spielberg brought the rawness of World War 2 with Saving Private Ryan, in this story, based on true events, he immerses us deeply into frosty Cold War horse trading that kept World War 3 at bay in the 60's. Hanks is brilliant and consolidates his versatile Hollywood statesmen credentials with an intelligent depth of convincing character... Never a hint of Woody! The plot hinges on an unnerving level of brinkmanship we need not know about, so we can all sleep soundly in our beds today, as they did in the 60's. Cinematography is pure Spielberg. The score from Thomas Newman softly but effectively wrapped up events beautifully and follows on from his incredible score for Spectre (007). Add this to your iTunes collection.

I have to say this is a good film. Well scripted and very well acted. Good score and visually impressive. However I can't say I actually enjoyed it that much. It was good, don't get me wrong, I just found it a little bit dull.

Pretty good. Feels like a John le Carrie screenplay. Hanks is brilliant as ever and the supporting cast do well. Check out the iTunes extras and you'll see the work that went into this. Recommended.

Wonderfully acted and directed - really - and filmed in the pace and feel necessary to transport you to a time of true fear between the USA and the USSR. Those of us living as children in the 60's remember the mood this truly great film captures. In this genre, the best I have ever seen. The sort of film you see, and then watch immediately again to enjoy the nuances more deeply. Very highly recommended.

How anyone can give this a 1 star is completely beyond my comprehension.
The acting is as good as it gets and the bases of the story is true with I'm sure some poetic licence. Even so I found found it totally absorbing. Another great movie by a great Director. Even the aircraft is authentic. Just a great film.

You know you’re going to get a well made, well acted film from Spielberg - the problem here is you know how it’s going to pan out - even the inclusion of the american student in the swap (did that really happen?) failed to add tension. Where Apollo 13 managed it, this doesn’t.
Fortunately, there is much to enjoy. Tom Hanks is excellent as usual - you wish every lawyer in the world was like him. But it is Mark Rylance who shines, deserving all the accolades he has received. His dry, resigned, humour steals the film - you wish he’s in it more.
