Description

From filmmaker Steven Spielberg comes the science fiction action adventure “Ready Player One,” based on Ernest Cline’s bestseller of the same name. The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.

As a stand alone sci fi action movie it was great! But as a Steven Spielberg movie quite a let down.
What made it not great in my opinion is the overuse of cgi and some of the ways the story went.
But the characters were riveting

Rarely is a movie with significant plot and content changes from the book a success - but this is. Great film, makes you want to watch it again and again.

Guess I need to read the book

Absolutely loved this movie. Felt like a breath of fresh air based on a number of movies I have seen recently.
So difficult to turn a great book into a good film so I’m very glad I haven’t yet read the book. Based on a lot of comments here it’s next on my list.

Fantastic. Great, stupendous,

Couldn’t get over how fab this film is. Watched it over and over again. A big respect to the early video games and all time era 80’s pop culture. If your of a certain age you will truly get this film. Well anyone with any dignity will get this film. To all those who state “ it’s not a good as the book” Spoiler Alert. THEY NEVER ARE !! Get over it. Pity I can’t give it more stars. Well done Spielberg.

Love this movie.

Oooh it’s not as good as the book.... I don’t care! Films that are originally books rarely live up to expectation. This is a great film with so many video game references, music and the odd nod to the 80’s is fantastic. Just watch it and see how many characters you can spot. Then watch it again.

It seemed just a poor mans blade runner and tron in one, they won’t be listening to 80s music in future you know! God knows what that was about! It seemed messy and Spielbergs worst film, I don’t believe Sony PlayStation or oculus rift style tech will exist in 2040 or whatever year it was set in, there will be something more advanced my then. It all seemed all rushed and messy cgi graphics to me. Total rip off this film, how come someone paid £5.49 and I paid £13.99? Don’t pay not worth it.

Doesn’t need to be similar to the book.

The general plot is the same as the book, but despite there being many other differences in this adaptation, it still makes for an excellent movie.

Ok, the film was decent but I was putting off watching an HD / SD version as I wanted to see it in 4K quality. So I got this as it said 4K right below the image of the movie. Unfortunately it's only 4K over the latest Apple TV and whilst I knew my current older Apple TV won't play it in 4K and was intending on watching it on my laptop that is more than capable, I was upset to find that the copy was actually only HD because the only way you can view it in 4K is if you have the latest Apple TV. Feel pretty annoyed and dupped hence rating.

LOVED IT!

Such an excellent film and ode to the 80's pop culture and video games. Highly recommend for both sci fi and none sci fi fans. Anyone who has grown up with video games (of a certain age) will love this film....but if you enjoy it, read the book - its even better.

Dont know what the hell the money men were thinking about on this film but i’ve no doubt their behind the decision to abandon the source material almost in all but name. The bare bones of the story have been used but the rehash of the story ? Has trashed it for the silver screen. The book is far better. Thats no critisism of the actors they worked well with what they had. Watch it but go read the book too

To me this film was very overrated and had a very predictable story line but in the other hand The Shining scene was brilliant but that was because it was THE SHINING one of the best films ever. Other than that the film was a big disappointment sorry to Steven Spielberg but this was not his normal standard of work.

So just to maintain expectations for potential 'Ready Player One' viewers, IF you are a gamer (ex-gamers due to family life, grown up or career, etc) and loved the 80s, I think that YOU would like the movie.
For others, I am unsure... Take a risk...
I liked it, it was good and fun. I was there for the ride.
It is 3 stars, becasue there are many, many, films that are better than this one. Rather than do the 5 star, "yeah I liked it thing", lets keep the perspective.
I'd wish the rest of the world would consider doing the same.....
Enjoy!

Excellent romp!

This movie is absolutely amazing in terms of the visuals and CGI/Effects, it’s produce is 5* quality standard, Spielberg doesn’t disappoint. character development is good enough, lacks a bit though, the acting is fairly good too; but what makes this movie is the setting and storyline of the “Oasis” and the fight to the Easter egg. overall we rate this a solid 4.5/5, For the visual presentation and the gripping storyline that intrigues all. Very good movie, Age rating:PG 13

The book upon which this is very loosely based is a super nerdy trip through 80s pop culture, and its a poorly written, amateurish effort. Spielberg's movie perhaps wisely has little in common with the book, ditches most of the 80s references, and fills it with action sequences and breakneck pacing. The results resemble an extended video game cut scene, and it's entraining if rather empty. Classic Spielberg this is not, but it's still worth a watch.

I read the book, its great, but the movie is very disappointing when compared to the book. The story in the movie is hopeless in comparison - why didn't they stick to the fantastic story? This film isn't worth of the title 'Ready Player One based on the book'. Yes the FX are good but theres no point if you throw the story away.

Oh my word...what a terribly formulaic movie. Plucky young kids defeat the big bad all powerful company...I couldn’t get Cliff Richard’s The Young Ones out of my head.
The CGI is truly stunning (which can be said of a lot of movies) but the 3-dimensional games beautifully highlights the 1-dimensional plot. It’s doesn’t make much overall sense apart from shoehorning virtual reality games into a film plot (effectively identical to Tron...not the remake/revision...the good one)
The references will keep the fanboys gooey-eyed and entertained...however, it’s just gloss on a perfectly dull surface. Incidentally, it doesn’t say much about the current/future quality of films if kids in 2045 are quoting 1980s movies...clearly it predicts that in the future more films like this will be made.
If you want something that is written with a modicum of thought and highlights future technology and how we all may be changed using it...try Dark Mirror....1 thousandth of the budget but infinitely better.

Doesn’t do the book justice

When I heard that Spielberg was going to direct this I was expecting great things. This felt very rushed and skipped over too much of what made the book so interesting and gripping. I guess squeezing such a great story into a film that lasts just over two hours was too much of a task. If you do end up liking this then please read the novel as it’ll rock your world!

Honestly, what idiot gave this 1 Star. Even if you don’t like the movie and don’t like the great cast, good acting, awesome story - the full on assault on your senses with the blistering soundtrack and some of the best CGI your likely to see for some time, are deserving of 5 stars for that alone. It is quite simply, stunning to look at . Can’t wait to watch this at home in 4K HDR with 7.1 DTS
One of a handful of films that is just as good as the original book - okay so it’s hard to fit an entire novel into a couple hours but Ready Player One shows how to do it.
There’s bound to be heaps of things I missed and never even realised.
Great stuff - especially if you are a gamer !!
I pray this is the future of video gaming. I mean VR is advancing an astounding rate and with the glove controllers and full body suit prototypes already being considered for mass production, I personally think it will (almost) be this good fairly soon.
Especially when you think back to how games have evolved in the past 20 - 30 years. Another 20 years and this could quite easily be possible.
Fingers crossed - but for now, we can dream - with the help of Ready Player One

No Substance…

It's only fitting in the lore of cinema, that the man behind some of the most iconic iconography in history and the godfather of blockbuster entertainment, is the one to perfectly execute a stunning immersive experience of pop culture phenomenon, and even manages to showcase an interesting parallel of social commentary with the prison of entertainment. Spielberg’s Ready Player One is the essence and complete ideal of blockbuster cinema. It’s invigorating, with a beautiful storm of passionate conviction. Set pieces are stunning to behold in such high volume and running at such an excessive and accessible pace. Ready Player One is handcrafted by the ultimate creator of imagination, to be enjoyed and adored by all players, who will be left in complete awe. My advice for Spielberg? Get out now while you can stand tall and firmly behind the next evolutional step of entertainment.
