Its important to remember that opinions differ. Therefore the quality of acting/script/CGI/camerawork really doesn't matter. So what actually makes this film bad? For starters its a triumph of hype over content. But thats the easy answer. I realised that the main problem is the much over-emphasised "Emotion capture". It works for me when the great Andy Serkis becomes an ape. But to deconstruct every nuance of Sigourney Weaver within a computer and then reconstruct her exactly....albeit (even) taller and bluer....seems an expensive waste of time. After all she's an actor, let her act!! So yes, it was "the most expensive Cartoon ever!!' (I heard someone say this as I left the cinema). For the record I believe James Cameron is a worthy successor to Jaques Cousteau with his wonderful undersea documentaries....Now thats what I call filmmaking!

People say this is the best film ever???

The fact that this film has received such good reviews is a sign that the drug problem in modern society is obviously far worse than once thought. 1) The script is diabolical. I mean, it must have taken a lot of time and serious consideration for the writers to come up with the name of the hard to obtain element being mined... unobtainium. 2) The film is utterly unoriginal, there is not one unique or intelligent aspect to this film. It is one of the few films that leaves you feeling dirty and patronised. 3) There is nothing interesting about it, the plot is predictable and totally transparent. 4) This film is so politically correct and yet is quite happy to reinforce the negative stereotypes of the evil corporation and a millitary that is void of honour. Is it not ironic that a film that gives out such anticorporate and socialist messages has made James Cameron a fortune.
I accept I am being harsh, but if this was just a kids film than thats fine, but it wasn't. It is the highest grossing film of all time....WHY???

Avatar is a masterpiece visually. The visuals are so engrossing and extremely vibrant and detailed, Cameron has created a very immersive world for this film to take place in; Pandora. That does include the action as well. The acting is solid; Zoe Saldana as Neytiri is really good. Sam Worthington is actually quite good in this film, this is his best performance to date, Sigourneu Weaver....was in it and the rest of the cast are solid. The story is niether great nor terrible it lacks originality, elements of this story we've seen before. overall great film :) well done Jim

A truly wondrous and life-affirming film - in it's own inimitable way. This film resonates deeply with people who look beyond the conventional view of what life and living are all about. There are many moral, political and ecological messages conveyed by Cameron's fantastic storytelling but breaking through all of that, is a warm, heart-rending and ultimately satisfying feeling of having watched a real piece of movie magic.
Watch this film once, twice and a third time to really absorb everything it has to throw at you. It's long, but never a moment of tedium passes and you'll be riveted all the way through to the barnstorming finale.
Absolutely cannot wait for the sequels (and most-likely fourth 'prequel') to be released.
Awesome and inspiring.

James Cameron releases another big blockbuster Avatar. The special effects are incredible, the noise is brilliant and great acting. The only downside to it is that it really only is amazing in 3D (something I do not usually say as I hate 3D) but great film.

This is a typical, over the top American 'blockbuster' that sacrifices the basics of decent storytelling for the gloss of CGI and other effects. Enjoy squirming through some awful dialogue -- especially in the first half hour -- as tell not show seems the only way to describe events. What happened to giving the audience some intelligence? Wall-E achieved more plot development and more empathy for a fictional waste disposal unit in 15 minutes than this film managed with blue humanoids in 2 hours.
Many of the scenes feel stilted and the characters stereotypical -- with little hint of tongue in cheek. Either designed to push what little plot there is or to benefit the video game tie-in. There is no denying the world created on screen and all its associated peoples and cultures are magnificent, but the story could have done with some refinement and I would have appreciated a shorter running time.
Despite my impressions the film is worth watching. With the effort involved in its production I hope it will prove to be very successful and represent an adequate return on investment for the film studio. It seems James Cameron knows what he's doing so I hope his career continues its positive momentum.

Rubbish!!!

Avatar's appeal relies on the visual world that Cameron and his team created. The world is incredible. Cameron can get away with no story because its the most extensive, expensive example of motion capture. It looks beautiful and you might like the characters if you stick them out for long enough.
But it's boring. It has no tension, no drama, no humour and no surprises. It just has colour and brilliant, revolutionary images. I'd like it if it was two hours shorter. I don't like it because its a visual effects concept stung out into a feature film.

Why?

One of the worst films of all time. In 5 years time it will be mainly hated as seriously folks there is no story. Yes it might look nice, "immersive" and oozing with creativity as everyone keeps telling me but so were the star wars prequals and they were awful.
Unobtanium? Please, stop patronising me with this terrible excuse for a macguffin.
Hey remember that unsubtle scene in attack of the clones when all the Jedis are fighting and one of the alien jedi stops, blinks and smiles at the camera?remember how awful that was? Well, Everytime you see one of those blue things it's a similar feeling.

Possibly one of the worst films I've had to endure (I went in with low expectations too). I will give this film a kind nod to special effects, but in a couple of years time this will look dated as technology improves... the same way the final fantasy film looks dated now. I can't believe that so many people are actually spellbound by this film, the story is terrible and stupid one liners make me want to cringe. This proves that we have moved into an age where appearance is the only thing that matters in our culture. An orgasm in technological exuberance doesn't make a great film or a lasting impression but at least this is being sold in 2D and not headache inducing 3D... which they will try and feed us later this year.

As good as this film looks (it is pretty stunning), anyone with more than a couple of brain cells would be able to to conclude that overall it is terrible. The story is completely cliched - think pocahontas meets green party political broadcasting- and the acting wooden. It's also way to long. The only reason to ever see it was for the 3D experience, which was by far the most immersive of any 3D film i've seen yet. However, Avatar still rates as the worst film I saw last year, worse even than Dragonball Z, and the most dissapointing movie since terminator 3.

I am sorry for anyone who has to go see this movie. I am sorry also for me, who did. The fact that i loathed this film does not matter. The fact that this kind of film is most probably the future of films in general does. Why are blue people so great? is seems its because we have found another 'cool' idea that has not been used before. The thing is...its not cool.
The screenplay was awful and cheesy. An example is of the 'love declaration,' which constitutes the fantastic one liner, 'i see you'. Well of course you do darling because he is standing right in front of you!!
The acting... well the main blue girl ( Zoe Saldana) annoyed me to no ends. Seriously, it was so 'over-acted'!
As for the ending... you will never ever what happens!! (that was sarcasm by the way)
On a serious note, there are thousands of films you could watch, which leave you feeling you have spent your time watching a film with a real story line, with real people, who say things you hear everyday (but it sounds even better) and you feel could be said to you. I am not against fantasy movies, just this one. Because a good fantasy movie can make it feel 'real'.
I take this view because i 100% believe that a great story line, with great actors and a director who is able to bring out the best of the story line and actors wins over any special effects that man is able to create. Don't you?

I much prefer this film in 2D. Even though I saw it thrice in 3D, it really detracted from the actual spectacle of the film, contrary to intention. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this film having bought it from iTunes, and it really is very good.
However, two questions: firstly, why is it in 16:9 on iTunes, not something more standard like 2.35:1? Not that I mind, as my iMac is 16:9 widescreen, so this is actually better for me - I'm just curious.
Secondly, a criticism - why is the quality so bad? My purchases of Star Trek and Wall-E are not nearly this bad. Avatar quality is terrible, and really lets down the visuals that deserve more. How can I purchase this in HD? for example.
Other than that, the film itself is gloriously entertaining, and the story, whilst familiar, does make the 160-odd minutes fly by.
Oh and the action is immense!

Avatar is an amazing, mesmerising, stunning, beautiful, incredible film. James Cameron can give himself a huge pat on the back because this is movie making at its very best. I watched this at the cinema like many other people and I was stunned at the beauty of the film. It was my first 3D film, and if anyone hasn’t seen a 3D film yet, you must! Apart from wearing the 80p 3D glasses, which weren’t very comfortable, and my dad grabbing at all the plants that would look like they were jumping out at you, it was a great experience and worth it. Avatar has also become the highest grossing film of all time, surpassing the iconic Titanic, another one of James Cameron’s masterpieces. James Cameron began work on Avatar after Titanic, but the necessary technology to start filming wasn’t available.
The film is set in 2154, where humans are mining a very precious and expensive material called unobtanium. The origin of this material is on a Earth-like moon of Polyphemus, called Pandora. The atmosphere of Pandora is toxic to human, making them wear oxygen mask whenever they visit. Pandora is inhabited by a ten foot tall blue humanoid species know as the Na’vi, who live in peace and harmony with the nature and wildlife of Pandora, and they worship their mother goddess, Eywa. The scientists have produced a human-Na’vi hybrid known as the Avatar, which are controlled by a mental link from the human that is genetically identical. Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, who is disabled, has replaced his murdered twin brother who was trained as an avatar operator. The reason for the Avatar is for research on the native Na’vi clan that live on a rich source of unobtanium. And like humans are, they want it for themselves. But above the rich source of unobtanium is the Home Tree, the Na’vi’s home. Jakes purpose is to infiltrate the clan and persuade them to move from their home, but to do that he must learn to become one of them.
The film is stunning to say the least. The special effects and visual effects are incredible and the scenery is mesmerising. Everything about this movie is perfect. The landscape of Pandora is a thing of beauty, from all the plants and animal species that light up the world with fluorescence, to the floating Hallelujah mountains of Pandora, to the tree of souls, to the seeds that float down from the trees. Similar to the landmark film, District 9, it shows a dark and greedy side to humans towards another species, they destroy the peaceful and tranquil world of Pandora just to cash in on the precious metal. It makes you think is that what we are really like greedy, destructive people. Sam Worthington has fast become one of my favourite actors, every movie I have seen in him he has given an incredible performance. From the Australian horror, Rogue, to Marcus Wright in Terminator Salvation, and now one of his best roles as Jake Sully in Avatar. I will be looking forward to anything else he does. Another popular actress in the film is the legendary Sigourney Weaver, who can add another great alien flick to her list of films. Zoe Saldana also gave a moving and stunning performance as the main Na’vi protagonist Neytiri. All the actors and actresses all deserve recognition for the performances in the film.
And there is some really great news for fans of the film, James Cameron has officially stated that there will be a sequel to Avatar. But no date has yet been set. Itunes needs to start thinking about giving its UK customers HD films, Avatar is one film that needs to be seen in high definition. And even though Avatar lost out on the best film awards at the Baftas and the Oscars to The Hurt Locker, it is the best film I have ever seen.

100% amazing!!!

Ths is the most mesmerising and magnificent movie i've ever seen, especially it being in a 3D/HD which helped in the magical experience, eventhough it could have been in full 3D but wierdly this was only a testing movie, to see if the public like 3D, and i'm sure because of this many more 3D movies will come out, but what movie to start the uprising of 3D, it's just out of all the others league, no wonder it beat down Cameron's other epic movie Titanic, which is still brilliant.
Now as it's finally on the Itunes store (not saying they've been long to get it, just that AVATAR has been long waited since it's realese in 17th of December) and the Ipad has only just been realsed in the State's, but this is coming out around the same time, or even the same day (A rumour is going around that the Ipad will be realised on the 24th of April) so watching AVATAR on an HD Ipad will be magnificent!!

I have just spent an hour crafting a careful review of this wonderful, beautiful and extraordinary film only to receive the message on sending that the nickname I wad using had already been taken and that I should 'start again.'
Not amused.
But you know what? I am doing it again because this is an extraordinary film and a remarkable accomplishment for Mr Cameron.
James you deserve a medal. You certainly deserved the Oscar. All of them.
With this film you have redfined the boundaries of what is technically possible in cinema and you have given your audiences an experience and images they will never forget. In the end history will be on your side.
Congratulations. Brilliant brilliant brilliant.

This film was fantastic, and actually got me in tears at the end (which isn't really that hard to do). It is different, exciting, and I would definentely recommend it to almost anyone! However, if you're someone who doesn't like to sit still for long, then maybe this film isn't for you - as it's almost THREE HOURS long! The actors and actresses are well suited for the parts they play, and it is very gripping. So, is it to be or not to be?
