Description

Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson returns to Middle-earth with the first of three films based on J.R.R. Tolkien's enduring masterpiece. Set in Middle-earth 60 years before the epic Lord of the Rings trilogy, the adventure follows the journey of Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of dwarves on a journey into wild, treacherous lands swarming with beasts of every ilk. Although their goal lies to the East, they must first escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever...Gollum. Alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo gains possession of Gollum's "precious" -- a simple, gold ring tied to the fate of all Middle-earth.

Peter Jackson did a great job. He added in the orks who are not in the book but that gave the film an exciting dark twist. The cast was great and the action was fantastic! But some how it doesn't have the great lord of the rings feel to it!

I really like the Lord of the Rings and this doesn't disappoint. Unlike Star Wars went they went back to the beginning this was done right and great cast as always.

Every bit as good as LOTR

On scrolling through the reviews, I read the negative ones in complete and utter disbelief. Which movie were THEY watching? It surely wasn't the same one I saw at the cinema! Martin Freeman excels as the lynchpin of "The Hobbit" ably supported by a wonderful cast. A wonderful, rollicking adventure from start to finish. Have watched this at least 4 times. Loved"The Desolation of Smaug" just as much. Cannot wait for Part III!

Great as a film

The Hobbit was a pretty good as a movie, but if Peter Jackson was trying to duplicate the book he did a horrendous job and utterly failed. I really enjoyed The Lord Of The Rings and was hoping the hobbit film would be similar in accuracy but it wasn't. Some people have said the film was childish and that is true, but it should be as Tolkien wrote the Hobbit for children while he wrote The Lord Of The Rings for adults.
All in all it was a good film and I would recommend it to all Lord Of The Rings and Hobbit fans.

Good night in film

I’ve read all of Tolkien’s work, including The Hobbit & LOTR several time over. Let’s face it, The Hobbit is not a vast tome like LOTR and, after all, it IS a childrens book. Padding it out over 3 movies was a money-grab… while the substantial padding had a respectful and authentic spirit, it feels disjointed and doesn’t flow right - I’ve watched the movie twice and it still hasn’t “stuck” yet.
It IS a good movie… but it is missing something.
I won’t even get onto the subject of Tom Bombadil of course………..

Great movie

I never watch LOTF and I was encouraged to watch this film and I loved it. Even though I didn't know what was going on half the time as I've never watch Lord Of The Rings, I enjoyed it. Slightly annoyed by the cliff hanger at the end but the 2nd film is coming out on my birthday, which I'm excited about.

Think Jackson should hang up his wand. This was dire and clearly made for the money. How to mess up a simple children's story.

Love the idea of the hobbit, loved the book so I was both surprised and disappointed that the film was that boring I couldn't even watch it until the end I thought to myself you know what ive seen enough and turned it off. Shame really.

As a massive fan of the story the hobbit and lord of the rings I can't say I enjoyed this but then I cant say I didn't enjoy it. I guess it was good, but it wasn't as thrilling as The Lord of the rings. I think seeing the second half will help me decide. The character that made it for me was the brown wizard. I feel as though they were concentrating too much on how they can throw things at you for it's 3D version and the story gets lost like most films made to be 3D. Could of done a lot more with the film. disappointed that the dragon is not seen either, More frustrating as smaug is the focal point of the story as is not shown at all. the trolls around the fire were interesting characters and portrayed very well. surprisingly the film focused a lot on bilbo when the book hardly focus' on him.. again could of done a lot better with the film.

Had such high-expections for this. Sadly, it was pretty tedious from start to finish. Utterly devoid of the magic that made the Lord of the Rings so compelling in the first place. At times it felt like a parody of itself. Particularly dull was the interminable opening scene, with all that forced dwarf-jollity. Jackson better pull some tricks out of the bag for parts one and two.

MUST WATCH!!! BRILLLLLLLLLLL

I wanted to enjoy this film, but I had the suspiscion it would feature the worst things about the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. In that respect it lived up to my expectations. It's over long, there is an incredible amount of padding, it's pompous, it looks big and glossy but it has no substance. The prolgue was entirely unnecessary. The music is grand and bombastic and pointless. Despite moderately good performances from Freeman and Armitage, there is nothing stunning about it. And was Christopher Lee included in the cast just so Jackson could apologise to him for the scenes he cut from the LOTR. I saw it to the end, because I wanted to be impressed. I wasn't- the only good things were that I didnt actually go to the cinema to see it and I didn't waster my money on the Bluray version.

Well

It's a fairly entertaining film but they've made it very different to the book. They've changed most of the scenes and even added a new character who is one of the main. I've seen worse things but it has nothing on LOTR

Good Stuff

A good solid film, but I really don't see why the whole story wasn't done.
Its really quite a short book, especially when compared to LOTR.
Feels like the accounts realised they could save the big battle scene for a second movie and make their money twice.

Will not play on the iPad One.
