Description

Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption - a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine's (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.

Not bad. This film is a lot better than I expected it to be. The performance from all the cast were amazing, especially Hugh Jackman. The songs were uplifting, funny and emotional. The cinematography was very good as well. The story was actually quite good. The only flaws I have e with this film is that it is a bit long and they sing WAYYYY too much, which can get a bit tiresome. But not a bad film, overall.

Amazing spellbinding performances

How did this film become so lauded. It was the most over rated film of the year. Every song is about death. How Anne Hathaway won the Oscar for being in the film for 15 minutes and only three scenes is beyond me. I fell asleep halfway through it was that dire! So typical of the academy to nominate a film that is full of over sentimental rubbish. Avoid

A couple of stars for some of the ‘minor’ roles but totally ruined by the miscasting of Jackman, Crowe, Bonham-Carter and Ali G. One more star for the sets which were excellent.
Have sold my Blu-Ray copy as I couldn’t bear to watch it again. Try the 25th Anniversary recording if you want singers (with the exception of Nick Jonas) as it is a musical, after all. The 10th Anniversary is also excellent but not available on iTunes (at least in the UK).
An opportunity wasted.

Hugh Jackman is gorgeous...He acts and sings his socks off! The stage musical is brilliant (especially an OUTSTANDING performance I saw on Broadway, NYC where men in the audience wept like babies) BUT this film successfully highlights the wonderfully complementary differences between a singer who also acts vs an actor who also sings - OUTSTANDING, BREATHTAKING masterclass for any budding drama school student - GO SEE/BUY IT

If u loved this u must see it live!

Excellent adaptation of the stage musical. All I can add to the reviews is that if you loved this film you must go and see it live on stage. I was lucky enough to get a front row seat in London and it was absolutely breathtaking!

On 31 August 2013 I downloaded this for rental; now it can only be bought, not rented. Why?
A very good film, with solid performances. Russell Crowe's voice is devoid of presence, but this can be overlooked.

Outstanding … simply brilliant !

Amazing film, beginning to end. For anyone who hasn't seen the theatre production yet, I would suggest watching this first as it tell the story so well. Star cast with totally brilliant performance from Crow, Jackman, Hathaway and even Cohen. I will definitely watch this again.

I loved this film and although I personally preferred the stage version it is excellent.
Then why the 4 stars? I thought the Amanda Seyfried was miscast. A nice young woman but it needed a much stronger singer for this part

Possibly one of the best films I have ever watched, the director did so well creating an atmosphere of Hatred towards the monarchy and the tight knit people of the slums. Anne Hathaway sand I dreamed a dream with such feeling and really sent her emotion onto the person. Daniel huttlestone and Isabelle alan also were excellent in the film, although they were young they really got into role and played their characters excellently. All in all I believe les miserables was an excellent film definitely worth watching even if you don't really like musicals, I made my boyfriend watch it and he still hums the songs 1-2 months later! Also when I went to watch the first screening at the cinema, people stood up and clapped!

After going to watch this at London on stage and finding out that they were making a film, I couldn't wait "one day more" to go and see it. The songs are spectacular and the actors show true emotion and feelings to their character. It has won 3 golden globe awards including best picture and I think that this would be the most powerful film you watch or buy this year!

OK, it's well made, the sets are impressive but the singing is only ok and the story remarkably stupid - why would an official chase a man who'd skipped parole on account of some bread stealing for 20 years? That's daft. Didn't he have anything better to do? Sacha Baron Cohen and HB Carter's comic turn brightens an otherwise turgid story with very forgettable songs and a preposterous ending.

Unbelievable !

This production will either be as Overwhelming as the Stage or a Damp Squib. I've seen lots of 'les mis' over the years. On stage and screen this latest in my opinion brings them home. Thanks!!!
Poor iTunes shot yourself in the foot again. I looked at pre ordering but found a hard copy(Blue-ray), iTunes and ultraviolet download for less. Must try harder.

I've seen the theatre version many times and love it.
Anne Hathaway, Colm Wilkinson and Samantha Barks sang very well. I wish Colm Wilkinson had a longer part in this film because the musicality of his voice lifted the dire performances of the rest of the cast. Hugh Jackman in particular does not have a nice tone to his voice.
Although I am usually a fan of Sacha Baron Cohen, I did not feel that he was funny enough in this role.
Overall, nice cinematography but let down by the singing performance of Hugh Jackman in the lead and Russell Crowe. I suspect this would be more enjoyable if you hadn't seen the theatrical version to compare.

OK I waited

I have held out getting this film primarily because this is my favourite stage show. However, tonight I relented and have just watched it. All of the actors are superb absolutely amazing. The can all sing and its amazing to see them do so. You will love this film and you will want to see it live in Shaftsberry Avenue London. Go watch it as long as they don't have an factor singer in the line up you will love it!!

Wow, just wow!

A faithful rendition of the popular musical with some welcome nods to Hugo's classic novel. A nice touch is an appearance by Colm Wilkinson, the musical's most famous Valjean, passing the torch on to Hugh Jackman. Great set pieces, excellent performances and some new (but non-intrusive) tweaks make this film a classic in its own right while finding a rightful place as one of the best screen adaptations of this enduring story.
