Description

Meet 85 year-old Jiro Ono, widely praised as the world's greatest sushi chef. His tiny restaurant, Sukiyabashi Jiro, is tucked away in a Tokyo subway station and only seats ten, yet bears 3 Michelin stars and has a month-long reservation waiting list. Jiro runs this culinary gem with a will of iron, deft fingers and his eldest son Yoshikazu. Their fascinating relationship lies at the heart of this wasabi-infused tale, as the apprentice struggles with the sometimes overbearing aura of the master. David Gelb's feature film debut nimbly explores every facet of Jiro's daily life, from his total commitment to the craft to his role as patriarch, making our mouths water along the way.

Fascinating subject matter and an insight into Japanese culture from a different angle.
The actual filmmaking gets an average grade because the film is about twenty minutes too long, there is a lot of chopping.... The weird choice of music lacks any connection to the subject matter. Especially the use of Philip Glass compositions in yet more documentaries should be avoided.

What a fabulous documentary and insight into some truly inspiring and accomplished individuals. Watch... I can guarantee you it's enough to tempt a vegetarian! Protect the seas - pole line fishing only, whether you're a Jiro lover or a sea lover your quests are mutual! This is not just a documentary on sushi, it's a actually a great educational resource to demonstrate the value of hard work, pride in your work, ethics, self-discipline and honour - all balanced with a good sense of humour! Well-directed and edited - an easy and enjoyable watch.

This is a very inspiring documentary that teaches about work ethic: passion, dedication, hard work, consistency, perseverance and self-discipline. “Once you have chosen a profession, you have to throw yourself into it, learn to love it, never complain and dedicate your entire life improving the necessary skills. You are always climbing to the top but you never reach the top because you don’t know where the top is”. I highly recommend this documentary.
