Description

Rome, in the splendour of summer. Tourists flock to the Janiculum Hill: a Japanese man collapses, felled by such beauty. Jep Gambardella – a handsome man with irresistible charm, despite the first signs of ageing – enjoys the city’s social life to the full. He attends chic dinners and parties, where his sparkling wit and pleasant company are always welcome. A successful journalist and inveterate seducer, in his youth he wrote a novel which earned him a literary award and a reputation as a frustrated writer. He masks his disenchantment behind a cynical attitude, which makes him view the world with bitter lucidity. On the terrace of his Rome apartment which overlooks the Coliseum, he hosts parties where “the human apparatus” – that was the title of his novel – is stripped bare, and where the comedy of nothingness is played out. Weary of his lifestyle, Jep sometimes dreams of taking up his pen again, haunted by memories of a youthful love which he still hangs on to. But will he ever manage it? Can he overcome this profound disgust for himself and others, in a city whose dazzling beauty sometimes leads to paralysis?

I really enjoyed the film, it's well observed and beuatifully shot and even though I knew none of the actors I felt engaged by the performances and entertained by the whole.

where are all the young people?

To me this film suffered dearly from lack of young people. Perhaps because all the young Italians have moved to London? It made me sad to see all these rich people/eurotrash with leather-hand bag tans ruin themselves with plastic surgery, botox, cigarettes, alcohol and silly intrigues when surely you would hope that people of this age would a bit more wise and into gardening and grandkids.. When you did finally get to see “la grande bellezza”/his first love you get to guess that she probably left him because he was more into cultivating this socialite life than appreciating the beauty in front of him.

Truly beautiful

A visual feast through Rome and amusing insight into Roman high society.

Possibly my all time favourite film, brilliantly led by Toni Servillo and one I watch again and again to remind me of the magnificence of Rome - the film overwhelms the senses and is utterly intoxicating - what a beauty!

Substance in the style

You need a certain amount of patience to stay with this languid story on what beauty means to Italians. And in a country surrounded by it the makers have decided that in contrast to Christian piety, visual beauty is a trivial affair. However the film is also saying that in this life beauty is the where the joy of life resides as we are surrounded and overwhelmed by tragic events.

DOLCE VITA REMAKE!!!!!!

Good film, but completely taken from Fellini's DOLCE VITA. They should really mention it. The plot, the scenes, style.
I cannot believe that they present it as an independent film.
In any case, Dolce Vita is BETTER!

Bad Fellini Impersonation

Times have changed since the 50s 60s of Dolce Vita Rome. This nod towards it but set now is ok, but actually just as banal. More so - it's in color. Tony Servillo is wonderful with anything he does even a badly organised script. Of course it has structure, but no soul and as a parody of itself (think Berlosconni) it works. But how this won an Oscar makes me believe in strange powers of persuasion (also Italian). This was a boring movie with extras getting in on the party. Indulgent and chewy. Go look at 'Family Fiend' or 'Consequence of `Love' for this directors REAL ability.

Comedy…?

How can you place this in the comedy category?
It’s a masterpiece, and has just won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film!

One of the best films I've seen in ages. Genuinely moving and stunningly shot. Toni Servilo delivers a performance of the ages. Fellini lives once more! Can't recommend this one highly enough.

Loved it.

Watched this a couple of nights ago and can't get it out of my head. A stunning film, but you definitely need to be in the right mood to watch it because it's a film about 'la bella figura' and doesn't really have a simple storyline.

Vacuous film about vacuous people.

Visually and musically stimulating, the character chemistry was ultimately poor and the conclusion feeble. Pity to have all that style and no substance. Maybe that was the point?

I loved the movie!
There is so much beauty to take in visually: Rome, costumes, houses, palaces, art and the thorough attention to details. Dialogues are thoughtful and charming. Characters are so Italian, so real in their extravagance and yet scary. The music gives you time to think.
Watch the movie on a calm night to take it all in.
