A fictional film set in the seductive world of one of the most stunning scandals to rock the United States, American Hustle tells the story of brilliant con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), who along with his equally cunning British partner and lover Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) is forced to work for a wild unhinged FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper). DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia that’s as dangerous as it is enchanting. Jeremy Renner is Carmine Polito, the passionate, volatile, New Jersey political operator caught between the con-artists and Feds. Irving’s unpredictable wife Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence) could be the one to pull the thread that brings the entire world crashing down. Like David O. Russell’s previous films, American Hustle defies genre, hinging on raw emotion, and life and death stakes.

Way too long. There were a few mildly intriguing twists, however, these were completely overshadowed by irritating and lengthy dialogue. Overall we were very bored.

I loved this movie. The characters are all credibily played by the cast and each has a depth of emotion not usually portrayed so well. The style is retro '70s and the film and characters ooze style throughout, particularly in dressing for the occassion or task. Technically the film is excellent, with great lighting, image quality and camera work.

The sountrack has some great songs that are very appropriately chosen for the mood and emotions of a scene, particularly the beautiful matching of the Bee Gees hit 'How Can You Mend A Broken Heart' used in a multi main character scene when everything begins to fall apart.

If you are under 25 or your bag is gratuous violence and fast action, this movie is probably not for you, but if you like character relationships and deep intrigue at a pace you can follow, you are likely to really enjoy it.

I loved the look and the cinematography but I’m afraid to say this movie isn’t anywhere near as much fun to watch as it must have been to act in. I struggled to stay awake. Watch goodfellas if you want to see this oeuvre done properly.

Yes I understand that most people consider it a slow film, but it's filled with small subtleties that make it outstanding. It's a film that gets better the more you watch it, and the soundtrack alone is remarkable

This is a poor film because it's slow and very predictable. All the so called stars look like they are doing this inbetween other movies, and it's all been done before, nice to see the 70's clothing, but not even worth the rental. That's another hour and a half of my life l won't get back.

In the whole genre of drama I found this to be a little slow.

Still enjoyable but for me a little overhyped and I'd say the character and acting of Bale in Out of the Furnace was head and shoulders above American Hustle and deserving of Oscar nomination.

While based on a true story I'd have appreciated a bit more fiction added to spice it up and Scorsese it up a little.

I’ve seen so many films that say this is boring. That wasn’t my experience. This is a tale about characters as well as what they did so you’ve got to get to know them. Really enjoyed this. The story is mostly fairly subtle by Hollywood standards. Loved the late 70s vibe. Recommended.

Although it was well acted it was a tricky and very long story line to follow. Didn't seem to go anywhere or even end anywhere. Was rather boring, wouldn't recommend it, trailer has all the good bits, the rest is pretty naff!

A watchable film overall however very slow in many parts. The plot could easily be condensed to 1hr30 which would have made the film much better. I think being used to the tv series Hustle I was expecting something similar but it didn't match up.

Not sure what hollywood's obsession is with these longs films, but they are pointless when the plot doesn't match up.

I think we're supposed to find the wigs and costumes hilarious. But that's not enough to keep my interest. Zero plot, slow, indulgent, and easily the most disappointing film this year. The hype behind this was Oscar driven. Such a disappointing load of rubbish.

Slow, dull, and not all that clever. Read Hustle in the title and you think BBC's Hustle. It is not. If you have to watch it do so at your mates house, if they have already bought it. Otherwise save the money.

Two main aspects drive this film; the plot is one but the main aspect for me is how the characters devlop and react with each other as the story progresses. None of the characters are portrayed as particularly 'deep' and each seemed to portray a specific characature but the story is laced with subtle humour, 70's style and a steady, progressive story that, for me, all fit together really well. As another reviewer (Vezna) posted, this film is 'no classic but is very competent'.

If you're looking for a full-throttle, bullet-ridden, explosion-fest then look elsewhere but if you're looking for a cool, steady, progressive and subtley humurous 70's Hustle movie that throws in the odd twist here and there, well, give this a go.

Went to see American Hustle in the cinema with high expectations and I have to say that I left slightly disappointed. The cast, as you'd expect, are amazing and the film looks great with some brilliant direction from David O. Russell; but it left me cold. I found it quite boring, waaaay too long and, despite the great acting, couldn't really care less about any of the main characters. Don't know, maybe I need to give it another go. A rental recommendation if there's nothing else you fancy, but certainly not a purchase at that price...

I thought that this film was great! The acting was superb, and if you take the time to understand the plot, and go with it at its pace, you will find it very entertaining. There were many parts I genuinely laughed at, and others where I thought how deftly crafted the story was. Watch it, it's great!

Great performances from amy Adams & Jennifer Lawrence but other than that, this film is quite forgettable. It seemed to come together in the last 10 minutes but was quite predictable. So glad I didn’t see this at the cinema.

Quite a boring film in all honestly. Pushed out early in time for Oscar season and I think in doing so the director has quickly hashed together quite a weak film in post production. A stellar cast but just an empty film with nothing memorable about it. The hussle wasn't believable or even interesting.

I loved the 70’s decor & clothing, some great songs too! The scenes between Christian Bale & Jennifer Lawrence’s characters are filled with subtle humour & chemistry. A very good script. I’d recommend this film!

This film is all style and no substance. The pacing is terrible as it starts well, but then the middle act drags incredibly, then the ending is extremely rushed. It looks wonderful, the soundtrack is great, and the whole setting is extremely well done. But the story is not as clever as it thinks it is. Very over-rated.

I didn't know what to expect that this film. But I was genuinely surprised. Yes it is a little slow in places bought is always building on the characters and storyline which as a whole is absolutely superb.

Definitely a movie you can watch with your partner and both enjoy it.
