It is difficult to strike a balance between fairy tale for the under-12 audience, and a fantasy thriller for the adult viewer. So hard, in fact, that I think it’s not possible. How do you expect adults to go with a visual world that often resembles daytime kids’ channel? And equally, how would you expect parents to allow their youngsters to look at something so dark, so fearsome?
Maleficent tries to do it anyway… not quite succeeding, but not quite failing either. So, it’s Lord of the Rings without most of the fear factor, none of the gore, none of the death and none of the dreary hopelessness.
Jolie works really well for the movie, I’m not sure who else could have pulled off this profile - she really carries it off well.
The plot is an interesting take on the original story, and I think I prefer to believe this to be the ‘true’ Sleeping Beauty, if there is one. Without spoiling the story, it is morally satisfying to observe the character build that the Evil Fairy experiences.
Although I’m really not sure who this movie is for, and I suspect it’s trying to capture too many audiences with one fell swoop, excuse the pun, it did manage to capture enough of me to be enjoyable.
A safe and innocuous bet for adults, but I’m not sure how queasy your kids are. I’d definitely not show to my 7-year-old (call me conservative).
