The book was bad enough...

...but the film is terrible. Tedious, boring rubbish from the first frame. I couldn’t have cared less about any of the characters or what happened to them. I wish they’d all gone...

Good but in an odd way.....

Enjoyed the film, my husband usually gets bored with films but he said was good. The ending leaves you thinking "Oh, OK".

This is about my sister who is deeply disturbed. The more I watched it the more things fell into place. I was amazed at how a film could be so close to my sister

I had hoped the movie would improve on what really is an awful painfully long book. Sadly it doesn't. It's just as boring on film as on paper. I have no idea why there was so much hype about this book and movie. Just awful.

I could not put the book down and was so excited to watch the film...... What a let down. Slow and misses vital pieces of the book, poor acting and just not a great watch

It had promise, waited for a twist, she comes home and they live together again. The end. Why is this such an important story to make a film about? It's so forgettable and teaches me nothing.

Twists and turns…

Pike steals the show as the best female psycho, bar none! Understated and full of nice little plot twists - it just keeps you guessing - and that's what so good about this film. Definitely not your run of the mill Hollywood piece.

I watched it, and my friend read it. It seems to have been a VERY faithful adaptation of the book, and both seem about level in terms of quality. The film is definitely a gripping watch, I wish I’d seen it with other people so we could have been shocked together!

the acting was great and the film was quite thrilling, however i did think there were large holes and as the film progressed the whole plot line did become more and more unlikely. And it was an unsatisfactory ending. It was ok at best.

My 1st review. I don't watch trailers - but i have respect for actors and directors - ben aflleck and david fincher - i couldn't believe the poor quality of the directing / filming / story line - and acting from ben (i wondered if he was simply being himself or acting - i couldn't figure it out.) My thoughts during this film - moved away from the film; it was so boring; i can't believe it was made - but of course - simply made to make money. David fincher is not interested any more in creating good films; and Ben Affleck should stick to directing - what a poor film - those included must have a lot of regret. its in my itunes library now - i really wish it wasn't even there - what a disgrace.

I agree with those who say the acting is first rate and there is a really interesting story in there, somewhere! The first three quarters of the film are full of interesting twists and tension - nothing you don’t expect if you know what to look for but it’s well done. The characters are interesting and you really care about what is happening. Sadly the last 20 minutes let you down because there is no clear conclusion and no obvious reason why the authorities are not asking the appropriate questions - it's as if the suits at the studio said enough’s enough guys that’s a wrap! What works well as a twist for an ending in a book is unsatisfactory in a film and that’s why the mediums have to be handled differently - it is an enjoyable view for the most part but not a film you would watch twice despite first class acting and settings - there’s no escaping the dull ending - if you can stomach that it’s a decent if not spectacular watch.

Very disappointing. A slow starting movie which never really gets going and which ambles along with a completely unrealistic / unbelievable storyline to a dreadful let down of an ending. Given the promising cast, this was a complete and utter waste of an evening's viewing.

2 and a half hours of incredible acting, cinematography, music score and just an overall fantastic film all leading to undoubtedly the worst ending to a film I have ever seen. I honestly was left speechless at the end of it all. I mean sure, it breaks the cliche when it comes to the ending, but at the cost of destroying absolutely everything the film was building towards… What was the point? So many unanswered questions, so much angst and depression; for what?
I would have given this film an undoubted 5* rating, but with that ending I couldn’t even allow myself to give it 2

Utter rubbish........

We’re so used to having our hands held through films, essentially being told which characters to like and dislike and having everything explained incredibly simply all the time, that whenever an intelligent, complex film comes out there are reviews that say it’s “boring” or “slow”. If you’re writing that, then you’ve missed the point, you’re not Gone Girl’s target audience, and your review isn’t going to help anyone.
This is a tense, haunting, horrible portrait of marriage and insecurity that was, for me, the best film of 2014. Here’s a simple rule of thumb: if you enjoyed Battleship, this film isn’t for you

Plot twists a plenty!

There certainly are some truly shocking "did that really just happen" moments in this movie...
On the whole it is an intriguing and frequently disturbing tale of a surburban marital dystopia quickly descending into a psychotic scenario of information manipulation and social engineering.
This is ultimately taken to a conclusion where you wonder if these people have any morality beyond self preservation and the attainment of their own goals no matter what may get in the way.
If you are a husband and out working all day while you think your wife is "Making crepes" or "chatting to the lady a few doors away"
then think again....
You have been warned!

Refreshing

I didn't read the book but came across this movie online and decided to watch it. At first I was confused but then the story begins to unravel, towards the end it seems like the writers just gave up and didn't bother putting any real effort in. Not a very good cliff hanger but overall a good movie 😊✨

I haven't read the book, I didn't watch the trailer, I just bought & watched the film. It was a long tedious, slow, depressing couple of hours. In the end, the conclusion was inconclusive. Highly unsatisfactory ending. Dreadful dreary film that was not especially entertaining. It'll sit in my iTunes library, never to be watched again.

There is no clear point to this film, is it supposed to be comedic? thriller? drama? there are elements of all of these, however with little affect. I was not entertained in the slightest when watching this film, I left feeling emotionless.

One of the only films that stays in your mind days after seeing it, haunting, dark yet beautiful. Fincher, Affleck & Pike exceed expectations and raise the bar with this film. You simply HAVE to see this film. Also the soundtrack is perfect, get both!
