Description

From the creators of BBC hit series Outnumbered comes What We Did On Our Holiday - the hilarious journey of an unforgettable family holiday as a couple attempt to keep their impending divorce secret from their extended family. Doug and Abi and their three children travel to the Scottish Highlands for Doug’s father Gordie’s birthday party, where it’s soon clear that when it comes to keeping their secret under wraps, their children are their biggest liability. From 9-year-old Lottie’s notebook to keep track of the lies so she remembers which ones to tell, to 4-year-old Jess’s perverse attachment to a brick named Norman signalling her maladjustment a mile off, the parents are kept on tenterhooks and a week has never seemed such a long time. But it’s middle child Mickey and his granddad’s shared passion for Vikings which gives rise to the most far-reaching and unexpected consequences, when a day at the beach turns to tragedy and the children take matters into their own hands. Directed by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin. Starring Rosamund Pike, David Tennant, Ben Miller, Amelia Bullmore and Billy Connolly.

As many reviewers have said, it is a film of two halves and I thought it had lost me when it took an unlikely turn. I was wrong. The second half redeems itself when it becomes apparent that the unlikely storyline is essential to the film's message.
I will watch it again to enjoy the many funny ( LOL ) moments and be more prepared for the tearjerking situations. Brilliant acting from all.

Fabulous !

I really don't care for parents talking to their children.
Acting was wooden, fake and really boring. Turned it off after 10 minutes.

I wished I hadn't...

Warm and funny up to a point, the central conceit ruined the film and left me appalled by the dreadful storyline. The actors were excellent and Connolly was great: the first half of the film was very watchable, shame about the second.

What's not to like?

This is a really great film, which will keep you both laughing and parents cringing from start to finish, a lovely gentle film, brilliant .
Oh and the children deserve an award.

What a refreshing change to films with CGI etc.... It's not that I don't like those films, but it's nice sometimes to be taken to the real world. This film is funny and at times touching all set amongst beautiful scenery. All the actors are great and the kids just crack you up. Such a joy to watch.

I've just seen this film and it is hilarious. Some might think some of the scenes are unfunny, but life has a habit of being funnier than fiction. In this case what some might find improbable may well be likely, certainly a very touching and life affirming film, it will have you laughing, it will have you crying, and it will have you crying with laughter, definitely one to watch.
