Is Jared Diamond's 1997 bestseller a work of staggering genius, or a piece of intellectual garbage? Has it moved our understanding of humanity forward, or has it set us back by decades? Are these binary choices ridiculously limiting? Totally! In this episode Sebastian does his best to parse the good ideas from Guns, Germs, and Steel, while also engaging with some of the best and most memorable criticisms of the book. Tune-in and find out how cantankerous zebras, the neglected history of India, and the Sapa Inca all play a role in the story.

Absolutely brilliant podcast, definitely now my favourite. The story telling and fun parts of history make it binge worthy.
Being English I totally believed the tale about the two finger salute being bow fingers it for so well!

My new favourite podcast! I’ve completely binged this podcast since discovering it a few days ago! The information is so well presented, completely draws you in and is educational without being dry. The host, Sebastian is witty and has a lovely voice 😊 Whilst the show can be lighthearted, it’s not silly and the facts are delivered in a way that you stay completely engaged and focused on the stories rather than getting frustrated with presenter banter. A total gem of a show and would 100% recommend! Well done Sebastian, I look forward to listening to the rest of the series!

This is an amazing podcast- I’ve learnt so much but also feel that it’s not too complicated that you get confused what he’s saying. Really recommend!

If you enjoy History and Mystery this is the Podcast for you.
The Podcast asks questions about History you may not have even known need asking, Sebastian is evenhanded in his presentation of the information and often leaves you to make up your own mind when there is no clear cut answer.
Particular highligh for me was the episode about Ra Ra Rasputin

Great fun!

Very informative podcast that condenses loads of research into a manageable size episode. And it’s done in a fun way too!
Only recommendation I have is to either turn up the speech volume or turn down the music parts of the podcast so that it doesn’t suddenly wake your baby up with that rock n roll. Cheers

So entertaining!

I really enjoy this podcast as they really do their historical research and put history lecturers to shame! This isn’t a dry and dull history podcast!

You can tell -- Sebastian is going to go on to do great things. He tells his stories with telling detail and massive enthusiasm, without getting carried away. He's clever enough to avoid buying into the subject's view of themselves. He also intersperses the stories with his own music, which is just as quirky as the subjects he chooses to talk about. Nice one, keep going.

Really enjoying this podcast, enough humor so it's not dry, but not sillly either. Great subject choices and an interesting listen every time, even when I am familiar with the topic.

Love this podcast! Great approach to history with a fresh slant in some old stories. Host sounds a thoroughly nice guy, whose enthusiasm for his subject is clear. No annoying off topic waffle, as on so many other podcasts. Can't rate highly enough. Have nearly binged through all episodes now, so my only complaint would be that I need more. Subscribe, you won't regret it

Love the show. Please theme an episode about Qin Shi Huang. One of the most brilliant figures of history. Did he really fire a crossbow at giant fish that blocked the path to an island that held the secret to immortality?
