Description

In politics, you’re often told not to get lost in the weeds. But we love the weeds! That’s where politics becomes policy – the stuff that shapes our lives. Every Tuesday and Friday, Matthew Yglesias is joined by Ezra Klein, Dara Lind, Jane Coaston and other Vox voices to dig into the weeds on important national issues, including healthcare, immigration, housing, and everything else that matters. Produced by Vox and the Vox Media Podcast Network.

Disappointing

I’m not sure the contributors really listen to each other. They’re only waiting for their next opportunity to speak.. and not very patiently.

This show is OK

This podcast is fine, it doesn't do a lot to distinguish itself from any other shows focussing on the carousel of US politcs but you do sometimes get an unusual take and they do chew over issues in a fair amount of detail. One of the presenters uptalks too much and it keeps me from listening to it more.
I guess it's just that along with some of the other podcasts that have become really popular in the Trump era, like the Pod Save guys, the presenters are progressively minded (compared to Republicans) but take too much as a given re: the general goodness of America in the world, exhibiting too much faith in US institutions to allow a slightly skeptical non-American listener to feel completely at home. The solution to our problems is unlikely to be aired on this podcast.

Perfect podcast, except...

I love this podcast, I listen to it every week. The one thing I would change is the verbal skills of the hosts. They are all smart people, saying smart things. If they could just cut the filler words (‘like’) a bit, it would make it INFINITELY more pleasant to listen to. There are parts of the podcast where *literally* 1 in 6 words is ‘like’. Not figuratively, literally. That’s it, other than that I’m a big fan

Tackle Evergreen and current topics

The Weeds is a fascinating political podcast. As a complete amateur when it comes to politics, The Weeds helped me understand a lot of basic topics such as the 'Single Payer' system and the pros and cons of higher taxes on the rich. The folks at Vox aimed to tackle more Evergreen topics in the earlier episodes which I still re-visit from time to time but have gone very current affairs in later episodes during the Presidential horse race and now for discussing the roller coaster ride that is the Trump administration. They still bless us with a white paper from time to time though!

One major issue

Love the podcast. I always get a little wonk thrill when a new episode pops into my feed.
But
Vocal fry. You all do it and it undercuts your message horribly. If I'm spending 30% of my time getting annoyed at the vocal fry and the vocal 'question uptick' at the ends of statements you make, then I'm not using that time enjoying and thinking. You can have a conversation and be yourselves but also realise you are doing 'radio'.
Otherwise, keep up the good work. And I want to hear more from Sarah.

Smart, informed and entertaining

A great policy and political podcasts. The best one for detail and commentary on complicated, nuanced and intricate policy and its effects on people...

Wonky and Insightful

The podcast is wonky and critically analyses the subject topic from all sides of the (mainly) American political left. It also very good to get a fact-based dissection of contemporary American issues.

Best Politics Podcast

This is the best podcast I've ever listened to. It has a great blend of current issues and historical perspectives. Each contributor is given real space to speak and explore profound and ambiguous ideas at length. All the hosts are interesting but Matthew Yglesias is particularly funny and needlessly provocative which adds an extra layer of humour to some serious matters. Usefully goes beyond the standard Liberal positions in self-critical and self-aware manner.

Detail in a time of soundbites

I love this podcast. I get so frustrated with what passes for news this day. These guys offer insightful analysis on various topics. I wish that there was a UK-specific version but it's still interesting and applicable because developed societies see to be dealing with the same issues.

Politics for people who like politics

Nerdy (wonky, if you move in those circles) political podcast that provides great in depth views of policy issues ... Mostly US based but even us Europeans can learn a thing or two ... Best of all the politics podcasts I listen to although you really should try five thirty eight as well

Irritating

The woman contributor has an astonishingly irritating vocal fry going on but at least what she says is not as blasé and smug as the man. His views on Orlando were particularly repulsive. There are loads of really good podcasts on the US election. This is not one of them

wonky wonderland

An amazing education in policy. The presenters are fun and engaging, topics are interesting, and the discussion of research papers is a true delight.

Probably my favourite podcast

I'm not even from America but I love listening to this so much. I've been so happy the couple of times there've been extra episodes as election specials. Seriously I wish I could consume all my news just by listening to you guys talk about it.

Fantastic

This is one of my favourite podcasts and I don’t even live in America. I love how fair and evidence-based the discussion is. Being non-American, I do prefer it when the topic is specific policies and their effects, rather than discussion of politicians which they’ve also done a few times, but I guess that’s probably different for most people.
Anyway keep up the good work!

Wonderfully wonk-y

Great little podcast for everyone who likes getting into the nitty gritty of public policy and is slightly obsessed with American politics, like me. All of the presenters bring something different and challenge you to question what you actually think about everything they discuss. Also a big fan of the self criticism part of the podcast - others should replicate!

Beautifully nerdy

I love this podcast, the way it doesn't simplify the issues or go for the common denominator, but how it treats the audience like adults and really explores the issues. If you care about policy at all, you get analysis here that you don't get anywhere else

Policy wonderfulness

My favourite podcast, and one that has made me listen to podcasts full stop. Wish there was a UK-based version of this stuff.
