Love listening to Unexplained. Great work Richard!
Unexplained is a haunting and unsettling bi-weekly podcast about strange and mysterious real life events that continue to evade explanation. A story-based show mixing spoken-word narrative, history and ideas - often to terrifying effect - that explores the space between what we think of as real and what is not; where sometimes belief can be as concrete as ‘reality,’ whatever that is…

The best podcast of its kind I’ve listened to, well read, erudite, and entertaining also. Perfect. Can’t wait to get the book!!
I prefer when it's weird, creepy stories rather than the old (often very old) unsolved real crime stories.
He reads the ads (which are too frequent) which are amusing in their insincerity lol.
This is my all time favourite podcast. This man is so talented and a great story teller. I find his voice so calming. The amount of research that goes into each episode is evident. I only wish each episode was longer.
Thank you Richard! You are the best there is in this genre. Keep doing what you’re doing. 5 stars and 2 thumbs up💗
Love the show.
Almost as much as Richard loves the word ‘promptly’
The episodes in series 1 are excellent. Really enjoyable.
Then there is a huge gap and it skips straight to series 5. I am not sure what’s happened to the presenter but his voice becomes unbearable, the delivery of the script is spoken in such a wooden way that it ruins the experience, hard to explain but it’s considerably different to the early (great episodes).
Please re-release the older episodes so I can listen to them! I can’t tolerate the later ones !!!
I just start getting into the story then bam! Adds! adds! adds!
The narrator is great, very much in the style of the creepy you tube videos that I love, it’s a style of its own that I think some people are getting. Good work
The podcast itself is good, however I couldn’t stop hearing the uplift at ever every sentence. It’s sad because it’s such a fascinating subject. :(
I love the content of the stories but I’m afraid I can’t focus on them. The readers tone makes one sentence blend into another and therefore looses all meaning. This is such a shame because a lot of work has gone into the research and editing. I one point I wondered if I was listening to prose poetry. It sounds like he is reading a list.
Such awful narration I cannot listen anymore
I love this podcast, narrative is clear . Some podcast have several people on and talk over each other. So this is so easy to listen too. Thank you .😀
Couldn’t get through 10 mins, the narration is intolerable
Whilst it’s a topic that fascinates me, I couldn’t get through an episode because the reading was SO awful.
Who talks like that?
It reminded me of a kid learning to read - all the words come out in the right order but with totally the wrong rhythm.
My ears are bleeding. Make it stop.
I think his voice suits it perfectly and cannot fault it whatsoever!
I have to say this is one of the best podcasts in terms of variety of stories but the narration makes it nearly unlistenable, once you’ve noticed the weird uplift at the end of each sentence you can’t unhear it. Such a shame.
The intonation that goes up at the end of every single sentence is incredibly unnatural, grating and lends an almost comically quizzical aspect to the narration. After a few minutes all words lose their meaning and all you can hear is the repetitive sonic structure hitting you over the head like a nine pound hammer. It’s a shame as the actual timbre of his voice is not bad, it’s just that someone has cruelly replaced all his full stops with question marks.
The topics are interesting. But the way the narrator reads is so irritating that it completely distracts me from the stories. The worst part is that I know he can read normally, because he does adverts and sounds perfectly fine. I’d love to listen to more but it’s just making me shout out with annoyance « SPEAK NORMALLY!!! »
I like the monotone. I feel it’s intentional to add an almost disembodied and mysterious air to the stories. If you don’t like it listen to something else, don’t damn him poor reviews. The stories are excellently researched, if a little embellished. I’ve been listening for years and have noticed a definite maturing not just of Mr. Smith’s writing style but also the production value. I really enjoy these stories and always look forward to more
I enjoyed the content of the podcast that I listened to but almost gave up partway in because I couldn’t stand the boring intonation of the narrator’s voice. He should listen to Danny Robins and learn!! I won’t be listening to any more if it continues like this.
it's all been done better before and i can't stand that dull droning voice
does he put that voice on or something?
I’ve listened to nearly all the episodes, having only recently discovered this podcast. And I’ve really enjoyed it, it’s well researched and written. However, like other reviewers, I’ve found the narration has become really strange in the last few months, and it’s getting worse. So much so that I’m now within a hair’s breadth of reaching the end of the stories and I just don’t think I can listen to the last few. His voice has got extremely monotonous, with a strange inflection. And as one other reviewer said, he delivers the adverts with more enthusiasm than he does the content! Oh dear. Such a shame, I hope he gets back on track and returns to the way he used to deliver the episodes. Otherwise I fear he may lose his audience.
Still stiff and monotone, every sentence is read in the same "up and down" rhythm and makes concentrating on the content difficult. Had to switch off after a few minutes.....again.
What on earth made this man think his voice would entice listeners. I suggest getting a different narrator.
such a shame but couldn't take the voice
Sorry want to listen but that voice is totally unsuitable for a podcast
These stories are so well written, in the main, but his voice has made it pretty much unlistenable for me. The tone is fine but the monotonous, flat delivery is just bizarre. Give it some light and shade!
The narrator sounds like a priest delivering mass. He never used to, it’s very strange and grating to listen to.
This used to be the best podcast. It’s become poor and pathetic podcast - back in September, you should consider early retirement.
Amazing content. For the people complaining about the adverts you can watch the ad free podcasts on patron for $4/month
The stories seem interesting and well written but I can’t hear a whole sentence before my mind zones out due to the unnatural monotonous voice
The monotone delivery is GENIUS! I’ve yet to hear a better voice on any podcast - incredibly atmospheric!
Too many ads being rammed down my ears to get vaccinated
My sister recommended Unexplained to me and I’m so glad she did. Richard does a great job of writing and delivering these stories. Total escapism and calming way to wind down for a busy mum/nurse/housekeeper. Thank you. 🎙 👻 🔪 🩸
Unfortunately the narrators monotone voice detracts from the story’s . There just needs to be a bit more … enthusiasm?! In it to keep your attention. And possibly fewer adverts .
Monotonous tone is grating to say the least. Used to be so much better
Was once the greatest podcast in the whole wide world, I still love it but, Richard, oh Richard; I understand that you have to make a living but so many adverts(?)
Not so much now. Boring and pretentious.
I love the stories and specific detail. However, I can only listen in short bursts due to the narrator speaking in the one tone and every sentence ending as though he’s asking a question, as opposed to telling us something . Sorry….but I find myself focusing on that instead of the story. I still think you’re great though.
Spooky and well produced!
I have loved this podcast for years. However lately, it’s gone a little corporate. High profile, overdone cases such as that of Manson and the family, simply don’t belong on here. This podcast has always been thoughtful, well researched and a bit off the beaten track. That’s it’s charm, as well as Richard’s unique style. There are so many baffling cases out there, which would lend themselves to this podcast. Just an example is the case of Kenny Veach. There are literally thousands of others. Hit the reset button and bring back the magic.
Beyond maddening listening to this irritating inflection and monotonous tone.
I really wanted to listen to the Enfield Poltergeist episodes but I can’t stand the odd inflection in the hosts voice. I don’t know why podcasters think these strange lilts and inflections to their voices add something to the overall experience. He’s not alone in doing this and it’s such a shame when podcasters do this. Sorry, I could be the best researched episode ever, I don’t know …. I just can’t listen.
Just listen to the Halloween special. Outstanding work my friend. Great story fantastically thought out. Really engrossing to the point I thought it was real. 🖤🎃
Hi Richard hope your daughter gets better soon ❤️
The earlier stories are fantastic, gripping and interesting. I have actually gone back and listened again. However, as time has gone on, the stories become tedious and not as ‘unexplained’. Obviously, this is to be expected because there are only so many tales to tell. Another downside is the increase in ads. I used to listen in bed but now I’ll be relaxing and listening and then suddenly listening to an advert. Again, this isn’t really his fault as he isn’t going to do this for nothing. But be aware of how this does change in the later episodes. I’d still recommend listening from the beginning though.
Good quality content but ad frequency ruins the show. Narrator’s stilted delivery also becomes annoying very quickly.
Absolutely beautifully written and presented.
The best podcast of this type in its class by quite a long way.
