One of the best

his has to be up there with some of the best. It doesn't talk down it doesn't patronise. It does exactly what it sets out to do which is to stretch and inform you. There aren't enough podcasts like this.

Red Letter days

It is a Red letter Day when the Jodcast appears on my phone. The Jodcast makes me wish I had read AstroPhysics at university. The interviews and the chats ooze with the thrill of learning and discovery and celebrating the unknown. The team bring the newest and the oldest to life and make it understandable.

Essential listening

A consistently high quality podcast from students at the University of Manchester. Interviews with professional astronomers are always interesting, and the monthly guides to the night sky are wonderful. Best of all is the opportunity to write in with questions to Ask an Astronomer and get a personalized five minute lecture on something you have always wanted to know. I have been listening regularly for the last few years and look forward to doing so for many more.

Starstruck

I’ve been listening to the Jodcast for at least 5 years and am a great fan: Super content, lively presentation and a sublime topic, the wonders of the universe. If you only subscribe to one podcast on astronomy, it’s got to be the Jodcast!

Essential listening

I've probably been listening now for a good 5 or 6 years and haven't missed an episode. Always something of interest, treated with authority and often in considerable depth, stimulating to hear young people enthusing about their subject.

Never fails to disappoint!

The Jodcast has been on my playlist consistently for many years now. If you have an interest in astronomy, astrophysics or space in general, I’d highly recommend you subscribe to this. No prior knowledge is assumed, since everything is explained to the point even my ageing grey cell manages to keep up. It’s strength is that it’s engaging, interesting and gives you the feeling you’re part of a group conversation. A fabulous bunch of people who I always look forward to listening to! Keep up the good work!

Awesome cosmic science show

It’s hard to believe that this awesome show hasn’t received more reviews than this. I have to put that down to the weirdness of the iTunes interface, because this is one of the best science podcasts on the net. Passionate presenters, and an understandable and approachable delivery style that doesn’t hold back on talking about complicated subjects whilst still keeping them comprehensible, fit together to inform and entertain in equal measure. Listen to this show, and you’ll find out stuff about the universe that you would never have thought possible… and you’ll do it with a smile on your face.

Impossibly good podcast.

5 stars not enough. This is required listening of astonishing quality.
If you hate being patronized by dumbed down content and wishy-washy presenters...this podcast is for you.
There is nothing as good...anywhere.
Congrats to the youthful team, well worth the effort.

Brilliant!

For anybody who wants an easily accessible mix of introductory and advanced astronomy look no further. A combination of stargazing live and jodcast have rekindled my childhood interest in all things astronomical - and for that I am very grateful. The best bit is that I'm now motivated to introduce my children to astronomical concepts - which is great!

I wasn't that interested before.....

But listening to the jodcast for the last 3 years has made me realise that I'm actually really interested in the universe and the latest astronomical discoveries.
I'm sure that must have been one of the initial objectives to enthuse the public. So pat yourselves on the back for a job well done. I listen to you all the time and wait for your next episode.
Congratulations on a consistently good podcast.
Thanks again

The best astronomy podcast by far!

I found the jodcast thru a review of astronomycast ( which was also brilliant before they lost interest) these guys are obviously very enthusiastic about making the podcasts and that makes it a joy the listen to.

It's great!

As other reviewers have said, its a good mix of cutting edge science, but kept understandable, and everyday astronomy. Highlights for me are the 'Ask an astronomer' questions. Tim, I think it is, answers everything in a careful but interesting way, somehow combining the basics with explanations of the most complex ideas. I love the way the presenters are not 'too' scripted, they are definitely real astronomers,
Another recent highlight was the July Extra edition. Can you believe it, they had 'work experience' kids in and had them doing interviews! Trust me, those kids were so sparky and bright, fearlessly asking their questions, it was joy to listen to them.
In contrast, today I listened to the September extra edition where there was a PhD student explaining his study of the interaction of active Galaxy black-holes with the interstellar medium, simply awesome.
You've got to try this!

Jodcast Live

Just listened to the May Extra podcast where you referred to recording the Jodcast is a cubby hole. This made me think - any chance of Jodcast Live - The Sequel???
Loved being in the audience for the first and would love to do the same again?

The love for astronomy

I was always fascinated by astronomy but you guys at the jodcast have taken it to another level. I listen to the jodcast every night otherwise I can,t sleep. I live in london but studied in Uganda. The little bit of astronomy we studied was in our physics lessons but they were out of date. maybe I will gift them with updates from the jodcast.Keep it up.I love you guys but not in the way your thinking.

Amazingly and consistently fantastic

I love the Jodcast - the best thing about it is the way that a subject is discussed (particularly in interviews) in depth, with no hurry and lots of intelligent questions. It's a real pleasure to listen to experts in their field given time to talk about what they know and impart their own enthusiasm. Great.

Fascinating, informative and entertaining...a great podcast

Many thanks to the Jodcast team for all their efforts in putting this excellent podcast together. For anyone who has not listened yet, give it a go and if you're not already a big fan of the subject, I'm sure astronomy will soon become a major source of fascination and interest in your life. Keep up the excellent work guys! You are inspiring.

GUY - Galactic, Universal, Yet human

Definitely the best general Astronomy podcast on the store: Galactic in scope, Universal in appeal, yet Human in understanding.
The superb witty British introductions and endings even make it a sure cure for anyone who tells you, "I can't look through your telescope. I won't see anything because I was no good at science."
The Jodcast mercifully spares us 'Gee's, 'Awesome's and 'Cool's, translates the papers and data into the comprehensible and, most excitingly, lets us hear the voices of the discovers themselves.
For those interested in Astronomy it has become our first stop ahead of the Hubble site.

In a class of its own.

I've been listening to Jodcast for over a year now. It's content is beyond 'informative'; it gives amateur astronomers (like me) and those who are interested in science unprecidented access to current projects and current thinking in astronomy / astrrophysics / cosmology. Its interviewees include some very distingusihed names, but the Jocelyn Bell interview stands out. The excitement of discovering something new came across beautifully. Jodcast really is in a class of its own.

Out of this world :)

A great mixture of news, events, information and more in-depth interviews that are a fascinating insight into cutting edge developments in astronomy. Friendly and fun to listen to - love 'em or hate 'em the intros are something else - I love 'em :)
This is what podcasts are all about - downloading the archive and working back through earlier episodes, a great resource.
Keep Jodding guys (and gals)!

Totally Excellent Podcasts!

What a totally excellent set of Podcasts!
They’ve got a fantastic blend of detail yet, debunk these complex subjects for the layman.
I really like the interviewers because they have the uncanny knack of asking the questions the listeners would like to ask of the experts, like ‘How do you weigh a Galaxy?’. Cool.
Chaps you are a credit to the university, well done.

5 Stars is not enough, these are all binaries.

I got a new ipod over summer and the jodcast made it worth every penny. Being a physics student from manchester I was drawn to the jodcast and after downloading and subscribing listened to it was very impressed. The dense amount of facts and news that you dont find elsewhere always gets me to think and has re ignited my interest in astronomy. Thank you very much and please keep up the good work!

September Extra Jodcast

1 hour six minutes and 50 seconds; no not the length of the Septmber Extra Jodcast, but the time it took me to complete the Tatton Park 10k run for Life last Sunday, whilst listening to the September Extra. I can't swear to have absorbed the full subtelties of Dr Folkenberger's work at the Max Planc Institute, but I can say it got me past the painful bits of the run! Thanks to him and to the Jodcast team, who prioduce what is undoubtedly the best show on the web!. Regards Sheelagh

Deliciously non-trivial - A full hour of crunchy astronomy goodness twice a month.

At a time when most science and astronomy coverage in the mainstream media is stomach-rumblingly brief, the Jodcast is a five course banquet.
The initial soup course is a comedy science fiction viginette which firmly establishes the programme's quirky personality.
Next comes the starter - a monthly news round up to whet your appetite. Often these tasty morsels find their way into later programmes as the main.
However, it's the main course that really makes the Jodcast stand out. This is a succulent meaty interview with a working professional astronomer about their work in all it's delicious detail. Lasting apparently as long as it takes (20-30 minutes maybe) we really get to the science of what they're doing. Also, the interviewers carefully pick their way through the explanations, filleting them with clarifications and spelling out acronyms so we can relax and enjoy the feast.
What better to follow for sweet, than Ian Morrison deftly guiding us through "the night sky this month" (soon with extra southern hemisphere coverage!). Like all sweets, it's the extras that are so costly - you could end up hungry for a pair of binoculars - if not a telescope... Yum!
To finish off we have listener feedback (surely the cheese course?). But seriously, these guys deserve their pat on the back, and the Science and Technology Facilities Council needs to know that this is money well spent. And let's face it, not many things make me pleased to pay my taxes.
Coffee and mints? Ah, yes. That would be the viginette "punchline" that rounds off the show.
So what are you waiting for? Pull out an MP3 player and tuck in!

IMPORTANT! If you only listen to one podcast this is the one to download - August 2008 Extra

Tim's "Sounds from Space" section is an absolute must and I thoroughly recommend spending half an hour listening to what can only be described as ‘sound pictures of space’. Podcasting at it’s very very best.
Congratulations to all the team on their excellent podcasts, keep up the good work! Do yourself a favour and SUBSCRIBE.

Fantastic!

I can’t recommend this podcast highly enough! It's fantastically informative and well put together. If you have even the slightest interest in the universe that you live in then this is the podcast for you. And if you have only a passing knowledge of the topic don't be put off, the subjects are dealt with in an intelligent and yet easy to understand way without ever being patronising or overly technical. Five stars, and I hope the light reaches the producers quickly enough for them to notice!

Listen, learn, sometimes take part

If you have an interest in astronomy, subscribe to this!
It covers many subjects and levels of understanding (some of it goes over my head) but everyone will learn from this and enjoy it.
The presentation is friendly and even though these guys are rocket scientists, it is in no way condescending. Additionally, you get to hear about some really cool stuff that you can do too, such as the Galaxy Zoo.
I listen.
I learn.
I sometimes take part.

At last - some brain food!

I have just found the Jodcast, and have downloaded and listened to all of the current issues. I must congratulate you all on some excellent stimulating programmes. I have been interested in astronomy ever since watching the moonlanding live on TV in 1969. This is the best, most accessible source of up-to-date information I have found - well done.

Jodcast is simply the best astronomy podcast, by miles and miles.

If you have more than just a passing interest in Astronomy, you MUST subscribe to Jodcast. Listen for yourself and you will find the quality of the articles, and especially the interviews with working astonomers, are just brilliant. Without doubt the best Astronomy podcast around. The Jodcast website is a great source of backup data and links too, but its not necessary to use that as the pods are completely self contained. I thoroughly recommend the recent NAM conference 2 hour blockbuster and 2007's 3 part interview with Sir Bernard Lovell.
