Description

The Atheist Experience is a weekly show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist and atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Almost perfect

The hosts’ knowledge never fails to impress. One slight downer is the new presenter Clare who is just dull, sorry. Matt, Jen, Tracey are fantastic and she is eclipsed by them.

Great Podcast

I look forward to listening each week. It's really insightful and entertaining and helps me understand why people believe the things they do

That theme music...

I've been listening for a few years now and have to say that the show is currently transitioning and having all the teething problems that you might expect, but on the whole the conversation is insightful, interesting and entertaining. However, I would say that Matt in particular is a little too quick to jump on callers for semantic differences, which occasionally gets in the way to a healthy debate.
Crossed wires aside this is well worth a listen for religious as well as non-religious viewers, however on a less positive note that new theme music is terrible. Grating vocals plus obvious and on-the-nose lyrics does not a good song make.

Why is this in the christianity section?

Don’t think this should be in the Christianity section but hey I’m just a silly Christian!

Feels like the original atheist podcast...

Nothing to say, if you don't know them, you're probably religious...

Well worth listening to.

An interesting and informative podcast. Examines much about the mindset behind beliefs of all kinds. The investigation of people's beliefs and the reasons behind them reveals much about the communities that they inhabit. Not everyone has the ability/opportunity to break out and work things out for themselves. This podcast opens doors and and shows that there is a lot on the other side. Open the door and see where it takes you!

Skepticism

I've learned so many ways to be more rationale and be honest with myself in terms of beliefs. This programme is the best on the Internet.

Let the games begin

A great no nonsense show. Matt is a gladiator for the cause of truth. I found the show honest, fair and ready to hold the light of reason up to some of the nonsense people believe. Great mental cobweb remover prompting many face palms. thanks.

Excellent show.

This show is great! The hosts certainly know their stuff and I`d highly recommend it for anybody with an open mind, and especially for those with a closed mind!

Used to be good - not so much anymore

If you want attitude, listen to Cognitive Dissonance. If you want content, subscribe to the Partially Examined Life or Reasonable Doubts. But there are loads better than the Atheist Experience. Most of the hosts have had their day and are getting jaded and bitter. I like Tracey and Don though - they seem authentic and do their research. And Matt is worth more than that show has to offer in general.

A fairly good place to start

If you're looking for serious discussion shows about atheism/scepticism/rational thinking, this may not be the best place to start as it's primarily a show which takes live calls. Although no fault of the presenters, many of the calls meander aimlessly as the callers ramble on about minor points, but the tack the presenters take is to answer the callers' questions by directly and pointedly addressing each question or statement and trying to guide them to a reasonable answer. They do not try to stamp their own agenda on the subject matter of the calls.
But if you're a theist with doubts (or not an atheist), or recently deconverted, then this is where I would suggest starting as they definitely are not in the habit of talking down to the audience or overcomplicating the discussion. They enjoy nothing more than hearing from the recently-deconverted seeking guidance. Although it's good fun to hear Matt occasionally lose his mind when obnoxious callers won't listen to reason.
My only complaint is the audio quality, hence only four stars. But these guys are obviously working to a severely constrained budget, so it's forgiveable and should not put you off trying it out.

Love the show. Best podcast out there for anyone with an interest in this topic. Only wish it was on for longer 2 hours would be great.

Makes my monday mornings!

If youre an atheist and youre interested in debates with believers then you wont find a better podcast. As this is a call in show the quality depends largely on the callers, but the hosts are all brilliant at what they do. Well done to the ACA!

Outstandingly good

This is in my opinion the best podcast out there. The discussions are open minded (at least from the presenters side) and stimulating. The viewers calls are by far the best bits, it has but one fault, it should be longer.

Not to be missed

The should not just be a public access progrmme from Austin, Texas, but should be nationwide. Entertaining, informative, challenging. Matt is the star but all the presenters pull their weight. This is one of the few podcasts that go straight to the top of my podcast queue. I like it that priority is given to nonatheist callers, and I particularly enjoy the proofs of the existence of gods, usually the Christian one. Usally easy pickings though.

Superb!

Great listen, informative and funny. Mat is a genius, he eats theologists for breakfast. Love it. Any chance of the rest of the back catalog being made available?

Lots of guts and lots of brains

I've been a listener to this for about two years and it would be impossible to describe how much it has broadened my thinking when it comes to the rationality/faith conflict. I love the way that Matt is more than happy to make a chew toy of believer and non-believer alike, the point with him is that you have to qualify your reasoning regardless of whether you share his conclusion. Brilliant!

if only there were more shows like this that dare to take live calls while on air! Fantastic podcast, thoroughly recommended

Matt Dillahunty for president

I never tire of listening to Matt Dillhunty venting forth (unless they get onto the subject of TAG, which takes some real mind-twisting to get your head around).Jeff Dee is also very good even though he's not on as often these days. That doesn't mean to say that the rest of the team aren't good in their own right, but Matt is the main draw for me and my week is empty if I don't get my fix either from the Atheist Experience, or from the equally listenable Non Prophets. If you're a non-believer, or are just genuinely interested in well reasoned arguments on the subject of religion, these are the podcasts for you. The Atheist Experience is also available on the usual video outlets as a TV show which is well worth the effort.

One of the best atheist/skeptic podcasts around

Very good quality podcast - An interesting set of characters who bring wit and intelligence to their debates. Don't expect this to be a bunch of atheists agreeing with each other - it sometimes get quite heated.
Best part is the listener phone-ins but usually when the caller is a theist. These range from the articulate and rational through to the most red-neck hicks you can imagine.
Also you should check out the Non-Prophets podcast - more of the same but no phone ins.

this podcast should not be in the 'christianity' category

Please file this podcast in a category in which people interested in atheism might find it. Currently it is in the 'christianity' category, what's with that?

Wonderful!

These guys are are an island of rationality in a country that is drowning in a sea of idiotic dogma.
The shows are intelligent, well researched, and insightful. They are never scared to say it how it is. Some of the responses to religious callers are just priceless.
Keep up the good work guys.....I just wish I lived in Austin!

Required listening

Matt Dillahunty is a rare find - a genuine expert in the bible, apologetics, and the tenets and dogma of christianity, who maintains a compelling position, having been on both sides of the debate. 30 years a fundie, many years of study, and then the realisation of being an atheist put Mat in the strongest position to compare and contrast the worldview through atheist and religious eyes.
Listening to the whole back catalogue of this podcast (and from the same group, the non-prophets podcast) has increased my awareness and knowledge of atheism, in an entertaining way.
Life affirming, life changing, positive, moral and fully and unreservedly recommended listening.
