Charmain Bynoe, author of 'The Estate, My Life Working on the Front Line of Britain's Housing Crisis'

Time: 59:33
Charmain Bynoe is one of our favourite guests here at Mad World, an unsung hero making a difference in our communities. She's a housing officer for Southwark, in London, and you may have seen in the Channel 4 TV series, Council House Britain. The work she does in helping vulnerable people is vitally important, but often overlooked. Now she's written a book, The Estate, which lays bare the challenges so many are facing in the midst of the UK's housing crisis.
Charmain joins Bryony to talk about helping those dealing with hoarding, how the community spirit on estates is so important, plus how she dealt with her own burnout and important of 'letting the TV watch you'.
The Estate: My Life Working on the Front Line of Britain's Housing Crisis, by Charmain Bynoe |

Top pod!

I have just discovered this podcast and I love it.
So far I have only heard two episodes, one with one of my favourite actors, Joanna Scanlon, and one just now with Dame Carol.
I am in alcohol recovery and get great strength and entertainment from pods and books. I shall now start reading some of your books too as soon as I finish James Joyce’s Ulysses!
Keep up the good work and thank you very much.

Great series

As someone in long term recovery I never tire of listening to how it is or was for others touched by addiction. This keeps me on the right path.
All of the guests on this series have touched me in one way or another, thank you for such a thoughtful line up of experiences.

Addiction series

I can’t tell you the relief I felt listening to Camilla T’s episode with Bryony describing her upbringing in a house with an alcoholic - we’re not alone!! This mini series is so important, addiction is still so misunderstood. Thank you Bryony!!

A fascinating and supportive look at mental health issues

I have listened to this for a few months now and think it is an excellent listen. I’ve just heard the recent Nile Rogers episode and it is quite simply brilliant. Briony has all the right instincts of an excellent interviewer and brings out the best in her guests. Highly recommended.

F#*%ing LOVE YOU!

Ugh honestly, between you and Fern cotton, I just feel like I want to sit with you and have a cuppa and a blether. Hilarious, inspirational, opened minded and honest. What a stupendous human being. Never stop making podcasts please 🙏🏼❤️

Shallow and gushy

In the early days of this podcast I enjoyed listening. Unfortunately as it has gone on Bryony’s gushing over her guests has grown to intolerable levels. The episode with Fearne Cotton was the last straw for me. The first time she interviewed her it was great - thoughtful and brave. The recent episode was like privileged teenagers cackling together- the shrieks of false laughter were just too much. I am deleting my subscription.

Show

I’ve only just found this podcast I’m experiencing mental health problems I’m one a waiting list to see a psychologist to determine if I have autism or depression it’s very frustrating constantly being told only a phone call is available
👊🤛🤟👌

sychphant supreme!

I was slightly surprised to see the week’s interviewee. Bryony’s questioning was sycophantic claptrap -like an over indulgent mother who can see no wrong in her boy. Much like her writing it epitomises everything that is wrong with the world. It glorifies rich, whiny, narcissistic, professional victims constantly navel gazing and telling themselves that life has short changed them when they have been the recipients of unimaginable privilege. All egged on by Bryony who has made herself victim-in-chief and has the objectivity of a teenage girl. Anyone who has read her articles will be familiar it but the podcasts takes the victim culture to another level. Hunter Biden is an addict that has received breaks that poor people could only imagine-just like Bryony he takes no responsibility for his actions and paints himself as the victim regardless of all the damage he has caused to others. But don’t worry folks….Bryony just wanted to give him a big hug after her lovefest...someone pass me a bucket.

It’s a mad world...

Love this podcast and the guests you talk to. It really helps to know that each of us are not alone and everyone goes through tough times with mental health.
I’d love it if you asked Miranda Hart to be a guest. She’s just great and also not afraid to be slightly mad in a fun, funny way!

I cried & laughed & a little smile

This podcast made me feel someone was speaking my words & feelings in my head & heart perfectly for me.
Ive read the book the boy the mole the fox & the horse. Charlie - your an extraordinary talented and wonderful human being. I thank you for being you and for touching mine, and so many others hearts and minds. Ive been in a dark place, and slowly digging my way ( mole like) back to the surface of this sinking mud Ive felt I’m in recently. I know 1000’s of people are suffering the same thing, so Ive not felt comfortable saying how I feel or that I need help- because the fear is someone might say to me, ‘oh do shut up, your not the only one!’ And i wouldn’t take that too well, as I know I’m not alone in this...I am just trying to muddle through and get over all this alone, without bothering anyone. What your doing..is a wonderful talented and great thing. Thank you for you x stay safe

Beautiful and honest

Had to say how much I enjoyed if that’s the right word the interview with Hunter Bidon. Yes he is lucky to have the wealth and privilege but that does not make his words any less inspiring for all struggling. It was Brutally honest and a great conversation between two people who understand the meaning of rock bottom and recovery. Best on yet although you can’t beat Stacey for uplifting conversations

Self-indulgent narcissism -Bryony’s hallmark

Hunter Biden

Such a thought provoking interview with Hunter Biden. I have read articles in the press about him and flattering they were not, however here is a man who suffered much trauma which I cannot even imagine trying to deal with. He was honest, warm and brave and thank you Bryony for a really interesting conversation about addiction and how life is faced one day at a time.

Stacey

Loved loved loved this interview! So much of your interview related... the bit where you say see you in the morning! I do this EVERY night with my boys but I just say “in the Morning” and if they don’t say if I wait until they do! My poor 15 year old must think I’m mad but he still goes along with it and it’s weirdly become a part of bedtime routine! If I’m out and they have some one sitting I text it to them and they text it back!!! It’s sounds crazy doesn’t it?! I think you’re such a lovely person and that’s why you have got where you have got... you too Bryony!! I love your interview skills and have listened to all your podcasts! I’ve suffered from ocd in the past and alot of what you have said completely relates too so thank you to you both!!!! Keep being fabulous!!!! ❤️❤️

Sycophantic

She sounds like a great person and I’m sure she’s a funny friend, but I find her interviews far too sycophantic! She kind of drools over her guests which is a little off putting.

I too was moved by the overwhelming love in Shuggie. I read somewhere that the author was on this podcast so listened to it. I wish the host had let Stuart talk more rather than inserting quite so much of herself snd her own opinions (although of course that is her right this being her podcast). The remark about the Lord on question time etc was uncalled for and not representative of what was actually said (it encompassed the generally accepted principle of applying QALY where resources are finite and demand for medical care are infinite). Just an example of the interviewer confirming her own simplistic political convictions on the back of a book that has so much more in it to unpack. A missed opportunity to learn and appreciate what stories and insights Stuart might have shared, if he had been allowed to speak freely rather than respond to Gordon’s lengthy but random exclamations.

Brilliant Bryony

I’m so happy that this podcast is back, I love Bryony and there is something therapeutic about listening to these episodes. The latest one with Charlie Mackesy was amazing, what a wonderfully humble man with such wise words. I hope they do call each other and we need a photo of the swim because we all know if there’s no photo it didn’t happen!! Thank you to you both💛

What an episode to open the new series with!

I love Mad World and I have been so excited for it to start up again. For me it is a type of therapy. The first episode definitely didn’t disappoint. I listened with tears streaming down my face, what a beautiful soul Charlie Mackesy is. Honest, compassionate, open and what great metaphors- frozen soup...I love it and can totally resonate! Can’t wait for the next episode, missed you Bryony!

Donna Lancaster episode

An insightful, thoughtful and unpretentious reminder of what is required for a healthy mind, conveyed in a style that is easily understood. I am not your average telegraph reader ( if such a thing exists) but the topic of your conversation could not have come at a more timely moment in my life! The podcast added hope and sunshine to a somewhat dreary day... Bravo 👏🏼

Katy and Natalie

Thank you for this episode. Hearing Katy and Natalie talk about their experiences in Sierra Leone was awe inspiring. As an NHS Sonographer I found their words comforting, reminding me it’s ok to be scared and that as a small part of the effort being made by so many Key Workers doing my own little bit is enough. It was nice to hear the term health care workers being used because this encompasses the many people involved as well as our wonderful Doctors and Nurses. There are HCA’s, office staff, domestics, porters, pharmacists, midwives and countless others all working in unprecedented, challenging conditions and it’s important to acknowledge them too. Thank you.

From an ICU Nurse!

Thankyou so much for this guys. Listening to this on my day off shift really helped the work anxiety. It helped, especially the bit about the burden, being a small cog in the huge wheel, so interesting.
