Description

Dan Hanzus and Bob Castrone love listening to music- almost as much as they love hanging out in a garage and talking about it. On The Throwback Podcast, lifelong friends revisit important albums from their past and go through them--track by track-- with fresh ears. From the classics to the cringeworthy, every week is a throwback.

Totally hooked

A great podcast, love the dynamics between bosom buddies Dan and Bob. I feel like I’m back in the 90s again. Two comments tho. Most Brits I know hate Robbie Williams. And the Strokes are a poor man’s Libertines

Brilliant podcast if you love great Indie/alt rock and a touch of merf too.

Love this podcast. Drawn in as an avid Around the NFL podcast listener. This is different but still as fun. It helped me get me re-engaged with music. Perfect if you are born mid 70s - mid 80s. The 90s and early 00s best from both sides of the pond. Keep it up guys and GFY.

Go funk yourselves

Nü Dan and bosom buddy Bōbby relive actual albums and plug you back in to some of the great music from the 90s & 00s that you still love but almost never listen to any more.
And they have a laugh while doing it, which is wonderful and uplifting throughout apart from that one moment when they talk all over the second chorus of your favourite track, or fade it out to mutter slanderously sotto voce while the other has excused himself to “grab another beer from the fridge”.
Hey - don’t get bogged down in the detail - it’s great - have a listen. Start with an album you half-know rather than one you love, & see where it takes you.
Thanks guys - can we hear some older stuff this off-season? How about an album or two that your parents (I’m thinking start with Keith, right?!) played to death when you were really young; see what memories it evokes and maybe how it shaped your musical trajectory?
GFY & heed the call 🍻

Like listening to myself talking about my favourite albums

I was looking for some new albums and stumbled along this show. Oh my! I scrolled through the episodes and every single album was one of my all time favourites. Then I listened to the show and A) the hosts are hilarious and B) they actually play the music to help get you in the mood. Working my way through the back catalogue and it’s easily my favourite podcast at the moment. Anyone that complains about the quality is a “basic” square that clearly ain’t “poppin pussaaaaaayyyy!”.
Keep up the good work guys. Everything your doing is 5 stars! Maybe some Ryan Adam’s would be cool as well.

Would be good if they listened to them

This is a review of the Purple Rain episode, well, it won’t be a long one. I had to switch it off, none of them had ever listened to it before, the special guest “expert” didn’t know the basics - I’ll informed and not funny in the slightest

Champagne superpodcast

I was a late joiner to this awesome podcast but what an absolute treat each episode is. Am an avid listener of the Around the NFL podcast which Dan hosts and found the Throwback after seeing Dan tweet about his “other” podcast. If you like music and comedy, this is a must-listen. 2 bosom buddies drinking, chatting and playing their favourite tunes. If anything, I’m just jealous

Extremely enjoyable

This podcast is brilliant - although I slightly regret becoming a listener just after Bill Barnwell was a guest on the Around the NFL Podcast. Bill’s voice is very similar to Bob’s and now I can’t remove the picture of Barnwell talking in a garage with Dan out of my head. Please send help.

This Podcast is a must listen & Subscribe

Now I don’t want to come across as a creepy Throwback Podcast fan, but hands up I am. I came to this podcast late and am happily working my way through the back catalogue.
It’s been a great listen during Lockdown, not only do I love listening to each album track but also the back and forth banter between Bob & Dan.
As a UK listener I just want to make it clear that I didn’t vote for Angels by Robbie Williams as the best track ever ok!
Don’t delay, subscribe today....you won’t regret it.

Under-treatment of the Libs

This is a poor introduction to the Libertines.
Recommend the podcast ‘Demo Tapes’ 2 episodes on them as a better intro to the band from people who were on the scene (‘oh the scene is obscene’) at the time.
If you love punk culture, the Clash, the Who, or any Cool Britannia stuff warts and all left unPhotoshopped, then treat yourself right now & just buy the Best of the Libertines or read ‘Bound Together’ official bio.
Also get listening to Babyshambles’ F*ck Forever
You’re welcome

I came for The Old Zeuser and now I can’t leave

Not being able to get enough of Dan on the Around the NFL Podcast (Highly recommend) I started listening to this Pod. Listening along really feels like having a boys evening in. Very funny, they both have such perfect chemistry. Thank you for this, especially during the pandemic.

What a find!

Stumbled upon this searching for Counting Crows content, surprised and delighted to see so much Oasis and UK content. Although I’m shocked that they didn’t know Shed Seven, the American nation missed out.
Really enjoyable listen, despite the Robbie Williams episode which I can’t bring myself to listen to!

I do want some cookies

Not just a podcast by a couple of Counting Crows fans (although it is that) but actually just a fairly joyous shuffle through a bunch of good and not-so-good and Mount Rushmore-tier albums from a while back. Also hilarious. Fave music podcast.

Where is the Starsailor episode?

Daddy was an alcoholic. Bob and Dan are fun to listen to, though - shame they don’t do podcasting for a living.

This Is A Blast

I’ve come late to this show - discovered it during lockdown. I’m loving listening to the guys revisit some of my favourite albums from my twenties and thirties, provoking loads of good memories of gigs and listening to stuff back in the day. As a Brit, it’s also fun to see how Americans respond to some of my favourite music. A really fun show.

This show’s mission statement...

Also, they like Live. So they’re fine by me.

Throwback for sure

From Chicago now living in the U.K. and finally music and pop culture references I can relate to!
Makes me a little less homesick with great music and lots of humor.

Don’t know why this works, but it does.

Another UK NFL fan that has been listening to ATN for years and gave in to Dan’s shameless marketing of this side project taped in his garage with his old mate Bob. There are so many episodes that take me back 25 years to my early days at university, and I’m grateful for that. Please do some Sonic Youth, Pavement, or Pixies, and also Stone Roses - they were Madchester way before Oasis.

As a UK based fan of ATN I came for the old Zuser but fell in love with everything else about 5 mins into ep1. It’s almost like they’re talking about my own Late Teens Early 20s!!

Love the variety of music

Love the pod and it’s laid back feeling. As a Scottish guy it’s great to see you cover British albums, it would be really cool if you managed to cover the Stone Roses, the Verve or the Happy Monday’s!

The Throwback Podcast

Thank you Bob & Dan for bringing my teenage & early 20’s back. Libertines, Blur, Smashing Pumpkins and the mighty Oasis. A must listen to anyone born in the late 70’s or early 80’s.

Fantastic podcast in the sunsshhhiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnne

Where has this podcast been all...well the last 2 years of my life!
Listened to the Definitely Maybe - Oasis episode and it brought back fantastic memories plus I’m now trying to source Kentucky Owl Bourbon in the UK!
I can’t wait to download other albums that’ll take me back, superb work.
Mr Hanzus you have nailed the British culture, it’s the 9-12 hour drinking session with your mates, what’s not to love with the backdrop of great sport, great beer and great music!

Respectable Music Punditry

These two chaps spend their Friday evenings providing full in depth analysis of music over the last 2/3 decades.
They are musicians, and as such provide insight that us mere mortals could only wish to have.

As a 28 year old with music taste straight out of the early 90s, I’m not sure why I like this - but I do. Great stories that anyone can relate to and a series of great albums and artists.

Great Podcast

Great chemistry between ‘bosom buddies’ Dan and Bob. The pair take you back to albums of their youth (mainly 90s and 00s), recalling funny stories, memories and 9/11 talk (put it on the board). Fun podcast that will always put a smile on your face.

DMB RKX

I started listening from the beginning having been familiar with Dan Hanzus from his other, slightly more popular, podcast but the Throwback Pod has very easily become one of my favourites.
It’s personal storytelling through the prism of the music of that time. While that could be quite dry hearing two men approaching their 40s talk about how good they had it when they were 17 it resonated with me.
Being 10 years younger than them their throwbacks to music they listened to enabled me to be reminded of music I heard when I first found out what music was.
It is great to listen to music that I loved as a kid being reviewed and it’s even better to discover music I’d never heard of before the pod. For example I was aware of the Dave Matthews Band but couldn’t name a song of theirs. Now I find myself listening to them all the time and I have this pod to thank, which must come as a shock to Dan, Bob let alone myself.

Two guys chatting over a record

Very agreeable podcast, with two Americans gibbering whilst playing a record. You have to excuse their terrible spelling (colour has a ‘u’ in it) and the fact that they think Robbie Williams is a big deal in the UK, but hey, they do have some of the best, laugh out loud, put downs out there.

The best podcast.....

.....by two past-their-prime, ill-informed, xenophobic, Robbie-Williams-hating, drunk, pseudo-music-snobs, whose idea of humour is to tell their fans and sponsors to self-fornicate.
Probably.
