Description

The stories of hip hop history told by the people who lived them. Season 1: Chris Lighty was a giant in hip-hop. He managed Foxy Brown, Fat Joe, Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes, LL Cool J, 50 Cent—anyone who was anyone worked with Lighty. But in 2012 he was found dead at his home in the Bronx, a death that left the music world reeling. In this podcast miniseries from Gimlet Media and Loud Speakers Network, we tell the story of Chris Lighty, from the first breakbeat to the last heartbeat.

Top-Notch Storytelling

This is a really, really great podcast. I wanted to write a review not just because it's good, but also because I think it deserves a much wider audience than it has. When I was in high school, I played the harp and listened to classical music. Hip hop not so much. I was super cool, I know. So I was a little worried that I might not know enough to follow Mogul. And that wouldn't necessarily be a dig at the podcast. If I'm not the target audience and it doesn't speak to me, so what? But after the first episode, I was hooked. I listened to every episode the day it came out. I would encourage everyone to give it a listen, especially people who think it might not be for them.

New Black History Story with Shades of Grey

A snap shot into the history of hip hop and black musicians hustling & striving for better told from the POV of Chris Lighty.
It's not black & white but shades of grey that make you think and challenge your opinions.

Good work

I stumbled across this by accidenat and am glad I did. As a Hip Hop fan it was great to hear the back stories and Chris Lighty and Violator management but more than that, I loved the way the show wasn't afraid to delve into some of the darker issues such as domestic violence and mental illness. Even for non-hip hop heads this is a worthwhile, entertaining story of a man's rise to success and the darker, uglier sides of that success.

Love it

I love true crime podcasts and found this one day by accident...boy what a great accident! The host is professional and the guests also follow suit! They are sharing information that people may not already know in an interesting way! I would recommend this to anyone who likes hip hop or just likes to hear about people in the music industry. Did I mention I LOVE THIS PODCAST?!!!!

Great introduction to Hip-Hop history.

As someone that doesn't know a lot about Hip-Hop, this was a great introduction to some the big players and events over the past 4 decades. The history, sub-culture, lexicon, etc is facinating and now a big part of what is Americana. Very well produced and presented. Can't wait for the next episode.

Hip hop history

Potted history of hip hop as told through the life of one man often at its centre. Saddest part is the shows end is in-sight. Gimlet need to spread the show out more with those brilliant cameo stories. I'd love to hear more from the likes of fat Joe and N.O.R.E and also from Busta Rhymes, Q-Tip and all the other icons of hip hop mentioned in this podcast.

Unexpectedly good!

As a white 20 something male living in London, i have heard about some of the names mentioned, but i have never heard of the guy. The story itself is so well told though, that it doesnt really matter. Listened to the first three episodes in one go , and I am hooked.

So interesting! Not just for hip hop fans!

I came to this podcast through another podcast, Reply All. And I'm happy I did! The narrator, Reggie Ossé, has a really natural style that's so easy to listen to. You really feel like you're being told a story by a mate, rather than being read to. And the story he's telling is engaging, interesting, sometimes funny and sometimes sad but I found I was always learning and always wanted to hear more. As I said in the title, Mogul is not just for hip hop fans. I listen to all sorts of music but I have to confess I don't know an awful lot of hip hop. Not only did Mogul introduce me to a world of great music I never knew, it also gives context and makes you understand the music and the culture surrounding it. And, if you are a fan of hip hop, you'll also love it and you'll probably get even more out of it than me- a white, middle class bloke from Watford. If it can appeal to me, you should give it a bash too! Enjoy!

Interesting, Real, great story

I'm no rap/hip hop fan, I know dre, tribe called quest, warren g and those stars that made it big, but
Chris lighty and some of the other guys in this podcast I'd never herd of, but I'm glad I do now, growing up in 90's England we had oasis, blur Brit pop was the genre, we missed out.
It's a great story, fat joe, wow

The first musical documentary podcast

Reggie Osse aka Combat Jack is an originator in documenting the growth and impact of hip hop on his Combat Jack show. With this partnership with Gimlet media, they are providing an insiders perspective charting the achievement of the American dream through the life of Chris Lighty one of the most influential people in the development of hip hop as the predominant cultural force.
Great access and a story well told make this a must listen even if you don't like hip hop give the show a go. You won't regret it.
