Description

Murder, infidelity, suicide, arson, overdose, religious cults, drug trafficking; this podcast explores the alleged true crime antics and criminal connections of musicians we love like Jerry Lee Lewis, The Rolling Stones, Tay K-47, Tupac Shakur, Mayhem, Amy Winehouse and many more. Why? Because real rock stars are more like feral, narcissistic animals than functioning members of society and that is precisely what makes them so damn entertaining. If you love true crime and you love music then get ready to love this podcast.

Informative, fun, brilliantly made

I love listening to Disgraceland, it introduces me to new artists, informs me of stories I have never heard before and completes stories I thought I knew everything about. It's so professionally made, each episode is gripping a delight to listen to.

My new favourite podcast

Musicians + murder? These are literally my two favourite things, and now it's in one podcast! I love the storytelling, the format, and Jake tells it like is really is: no sugar coated manufactured pop fantasy lives of the musicians, just the true nitty gritty. I've learned so much. I have a new found love for Kurt & Courtney and Sid and Nancy. Love Kills. Tell me the truth. It's gruesome but it's great. I love it.

Keep It Coming

Disgraceland is that rare gem in podcast land, it’s well researched, beautifully written, wonderfully produced and narrated by someone whose passion for his subject comes across in abundance. I could listen to Jake Brennan’s dulcet tones all day. His stories about the side of music and its icons that we never get to see or hear about are always fascinating and revealing, and I look forward to each one. Jake, keep them coming please.

Awesome podcast

I stumbled across this podcast and I have been hooked. It is expertly delivered and soooo intriguing and interesting and I am learning the history of some of the infamy of musicians that I adore. Very very entertaining.

An absorbing listen and brilliantly produced

Heard the advert for this on another pod I subscribe too, immediately subscribed and have binged all the episodes in a week. Absolutely brilliant storytelling - absorbing, in depth forays into some of the most colourful characters in music. Clearly told by a man with passion for music that burns like a star and a true love of storytelling. A new favourite, long may it continue!

shame

The subject matter has so much potential and instantly drew me in. Unfortunately it is totallly ruined by the presenter who lovews the sound of his voice to much as well as being pretentious and irritating. I couldnt bare any more than half an episode. A big shame.

Not a docupod, still great!

So this isn't a docupod but it is a great podcast, with a awesome narrator telling great stories. Emphasis on the word stories. As long as you keep that in mind, you'll enjoy it. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because none of the actual music is licensed, it really is required for most of the stories.

It’s fine

It’s an ok podcast, honestly though with the idea and format I was expecting it to be much, much better. Like others have said, the host gets a little carried away sometimes and it would be better if he stuck to facts. Also, not being able to licence any of the music that he’s talking about makes it a whole lot less enjoyable. If you listen you will definitely get sick of the clapped out loops that he uses for his music.

Opening Horizons Musically & an Education

Disgraceland has been my favourite podcast for a while now. After listening to every episode, I find myself looking into the featured artist a bit more and listening to their music - in some cases, this has opened up my musical horizons; for which I will be eternally appreciative.
More importantly, Disgraceland is a series of commute friendly length episodes that offer a well written and researched education into the darker side of the music industry. My only complaint is that there just isn't enough episodes!

A well researched and written podcast that delivers.

A well researched and written podcast that i initially missed however I have since made it my go to podcast for my hour long cycle to and from work. The stories chosen are not always the obvious ones however they are dleivered in an enigmatic and engaging style that holds your attention. In fcat the only one I have not listened to yet is the Biggie and Tupac one and thats only because I have heard, read and watched plenty of information on this subject. Superb.

hmmm

Interesting concept, but feels like more opinion than fact in quite a few episodes. If you’re going to make a podcast like this, you should stick to the facts and avoid name calling. Makes the whole thing feel like it’s something you just made up.

He spins a good yarn

As long as you take the details with a pinch of salt, the narrator clearly enjoys telling a story. Unfortunately he sometimes gets carried away and enters the realms of the ridiculous, but for the most part it’s enjoyable enough.

Bangin’ Pod

Absolutely love this podcast, format, tone, info- everything!! The topic itself is a genius idea and I love the fact that the podcaster himself evokes the grungy, messy feel that most of these cases require.

Fact or fiction?

Cheesy dramatised story telling. Interesting subject matter presented in the style of a trashy US police chase tv show.

Chilling. Harrowing. Fantastic.

Tales of debauchery and the likes told in a chilling fashion. The narration’s delivery is great. The accompanying music, harrowing at times making the horror-esque fables of musicians.

This will get you hooked!

This is one of my new favourites! True stories of the less than glamorous backstories of famous (and infamous) artists. It’s very well produced, the narrator is clearly passionate about these stories and tell them very well, and the stories themselves are straightforward and keep you hooked from the first line! I hope there will be a season two (I’m only on episode 5). Well done!

Gripping tales told with truly insightful passion

I listened to every episode of Disgraceland available in about a week. I’ve been shocked, horrified, made to laugh and gripped by the ear holes by Jake Brennan’s fantastic passion and storytelling. I’ve heard things about people I had no idea about and I’ve been gripped every step of the way. If you have an interest in morbid reality and the outrageous lives of interesting musicians, I couldn’t recommend this podcast enough!

Jawdropping podcast

Absolutely stunning true crime podcast. Jake Brennan is as rock n roll as the bad boys & girls of the music industry that he waxes lyrical about. Fantastic production quality and a really, really interesting subject matter. You’ll want to binge all of these episodes. Can’t recommend highly enough

Seedy, lurid and nasty - love it 👍🏻

I’ve been binging this for the last week - great podcast.
Jake brings the stories to life brilliantly, and doesn’t pull any punches - this is proper warts and all stuff.
Personal fave so far was the Black Metal episode - not for the squeamish..........

Beyond good. Get ahold of it and thank yourself with a few hours of concentrated listening. Well presented, often funny and horrific at once, alrmingly informative-pure entertainment and top shelf storytelling. Can't get enough of this stuff.

Hungry for more .

I can’t fault this podcast ... yes he does make assumptions to make the story more interesting and more consuming , but hey it works and I listen to each episode 3 or 4 times . His voice is beautiful, like chocolate being dropped into your ear ! and his love of music is evident . The story’s are all well written and just a joy to listen to. I’d fallen out of love with true crime podcasts but this one is so very different .
He is a master story teller , and weaves an intricate fantastic tale that you can’t help getting involved with .

All caught up

Binge listened to all the episodes whilst sat at my desk working. Every episode has peaked my interest and had me hitting google to find out even more about the bands and people. And of course there’s Jakes very easy to listen to voice. Love that accent. Keep it up. 👏🏻🎶🎸

Entertaining but listen with a dose of salt

This podcast is very well produced and highly engaging. The stories are fairly gripping.
However, there are a few things that stop this being a great podcast. Firstly, the formulaic: “the music at the top of the show, that was not great music. That was a preset loop from my Mellotron...” schtick is pretty annoying and I just skip the first minute or so of each episode now because of it.
Secondly, I get that Brennan is speaking in the voice of the subject but the vulgarity is sometimes pretty jarring and he relates thoughts and incidents he can’t possibly know to be true. The John Lennon episode is a good example of this. I guess this is immersive but it’s also highly speculative and means this podcast crosses into “based on true events” fiction for me.
Thirdly, it’s clear that Brennan picks a narrative lane and sticks with it, contrary to facts. The most egregious example of this is the most recent episode about Sinatra. I am not sure if Brennan actually believes what he was saying, but I spent a good deal of it rolling my eyes in irritation at the massive oversimplification of JFK’s presidency & conspiracy narrative of his assassination.
So all in all, this is a good listen but it lacks depth and is best treated as a bit of gossipy entertainment.
