Description

Deadly Manners is a 10 episode, dark comedy murder-mystery series set in the winter of 1954. It follows the events during the night of the affluent Billings family annual dinner party with their distinguished, eccentric guests. However, all is not fun and games as shortly after the party starts, a snowstorm begins to rage outside, trapping all the partygoers inside their host’s mansion. When a murderer starts killing off those in attendance, the guests must figure out who is responsible, or at least how to stay alive -- lest they be next.
Deadly Manners was created by Ali Garfinkel and Alex Aldea.
Deadly Manners stars Kristen Bell, Denis O'Hare, Alisha Boe, RuPaul, Anna Chlumsky, Timothy Simons, Michelle Visage, Alona Tal, David Cummings and is narrated by LeVar Burton.

GREAT cast!

Binge listened to all of this and absolutely loved it. Love the LGBT inclusion 🌈 It kept me guessing and there was a plot twist in every episode. All around fantastic!

Good, but not great

I’m torn. Yes, this podcast is everything the negative reviews say, overblown, over-acted (for the most part), and heavily written. These things may be deliberate, but the listening experience definitely suffers because of them. I think that winding things in a little would have made a more well-rounded production. In short, listen to the first episode and see if this style is for you.

Dire dialogue, stereotyping and contrived plot

Very disappointed with this podcast. Stereotyping and racism prevails. The plot is sluggish, the dialogue stilling and false and the casting over blown. It doesn’t matter that this was set in the 1950’s, that is not a legitimate excuse for the ignorant and stilted portrayal of the black character. As a mixed heritage person I found the lack of knowledge about this period of history lamentable.

Poking fun

This is silly, cheesy and super FUN! Which is what it was designed to be, loved every moment. Apparently not everyone has the same taste in humour but then we can’t all be the same. Give it a listen, you may just find your next binge listen in this podcast

Very fun

I genuinely enjoyed this. It is reminiscent of a favourite old film, dinner at 8.
Despite a lifetime love of Agatha Christie novels, it took me until episode 8 to work out who the killer was.
I really look forward to season 2

Let down by Cliché and self righteous writing

This series is okay for some distraction when doing other tasks but I cringed at moments the script turned sloppily moralistic and self righteous.
Sound design and narration was okay. Some performers did the best they could with the script others were a bit hard to listen to at times.

Meh

I was really excited for this when I first heard it was being released. I love true crime podcasts and anything kinda spooky. I knew this would be a fictional audio drama but I thought I would give it a go. The writing is fairly weak, the character development wasn’t very good and the ending was very contrived and predictable. I enjoyed the show hence the 2 stars but I really didn’t think it was good... if that makes sense.

Hmm...

I really want to like this but I'm struggling so far (two episodes in). It has the makings of a good series and on paper looks good but somehow it doesn't come off. There are too many characters to get to grips with initially, it's too hammy (in a bad way) and not very convincing. If you like the idea of it then watch the Tim Curry version of Clue which does this in a really fun (though still flawed way). Or check out The Mousetrap on stage. These both do the genre much better, introducing characters one by one, building the tension and suspense, having well planned humour etc. Deadly Manners just falls down on too many levels. It doesn't make sense that after discovering a dead body they go and eat dinner and try to continue the party. Then after another murder they plan to have dessert... Even with the suspension of disbelief, it just stretches it too far without any convincing characters to latch on to. The soundtrack is also poorly executed unfortunately. Not sure if I'll make it through sadly.

So Cheesy but that’s what to love about it!

This show is perfectly cast! It’s meant to be cheesy and stereotypical, that’s what I love about it! Everyone loves a good old fashion murder mystery! Looking forward to more episodes.

Terrible sound design.

The cast is great but the story and sound design destroy it. It’s a real shame. It’s distractingly terrible sound design. I agree, there is much better quality out there.

Not my thing

Just felt the acting was pretty poor in all honesty. Much better audio drama available

If you loved Darkest Night this will be for you.

Is it cheesy? Yes.
Is it predictable? Yes
Is it entertaining to listen to? Yes!
Don’t read the negative reviews and let them put you off. Go into this podcast knowing it’s meant to be cheesy and over dramatic and you’ll love it! I listen at work at my dull job and it certainly brightens it up for the 30 minutes I listen for!

Don’t normally write reviews, but the one above is wrong.

There are stereotypes in this play, however, it’s set in the 1950’s and so is authentic to the times. If you actually listen to the episodes; you will hear those stereotypes challenged time and time again.
Cast is fantastic, George the Butler especially. Musical scoring is the perfect accompaniment to the play. Looking forward to more episodes.
