Ep 78 Bartonella: Keep Calm and Carrión

Ep 78 Bartonella: Keep Calm and Carrión

Time: 1:27:10
“Let’s do Bartonella next,” we said. “It’ll be straightforward and fun,” we promised ourselves. Turns out we were half right. In this fun but not quite straightforward episode, we tackle not one, not two, but three different species of Bartonella bacteria that can cause disease in humans: Bartonella bacilliformis (Carrión’s disease), B. quintana (trench fever), B. henselae (cat scratch disease). Essentially, we’re giving you three mini-turned-maxisodes for the price of one! For each pathogen, we review its surprisingly strange biology, take a brief tour of its history, and wrap up with a look at its current status across the globe, comparing and contrasting along the way. By the end of this ride, you’ll be bursting with Bartonella trivia, in awe of dental pulp, and scratching your head about the transmission of cat scratch fever.

These hosts are the most enthusiastic, intelligent and downright adorable people I have ever had in my earholes. “Isn’t it thrilling?” “Gnarly!” I have listened to some episodes multiple times and now have interesting stuff to say at dinner in a year where basically nothing is happening.
I am now fascinated by diseases and it has reminded me of my interest in science from back in school. I LOVE the combo of history and biology. Thank you for all your hard work, excellent research and endearing jokes.

Fascinating, both the science (knew nothing about this) and the social/human elements. Often very depressing listening! Love the Erin’s, keep up the good work!! Highly recommend it all, especially the quarantinis which were a thing a ‘thing’ pre covid!

I recommend this podcast to everyone I know - especially in the current state of the world! Erin and Erin have created that rare combination of truly informative scientific information, presented in an entertaining and easily absorbed way. I’d say this is my absolute favourite podcast, and I can’t wait for the next series!! Thanks so much for creating this wonderful podcast.

I can’t recommend this enough. I started listening in lockdown and was really disciplined in listening to the episodes in chronological order, which is spookily prescient from episode 1. Funny, intelligent, informative, shocking, factual but not judgemental or preachy. The Erins are brilliant and don’t shy away from discussing the hard truth about human beings in all the ways they are good and bad. Now wash your hands, you filthy animals.

Great idea, annoying presentation

On the face of it, this should be a great show. Well researched, often with excellent contributions from guests, it is spoiled by too much dead space between the real content. The Covid series was generally very good, but marred by the same irritations.

So educational with the personal touch

I absolutely love this podcast, it’s probably my favourite. Especially appreciate that they use language and descriptions of the biology even I can understand and then add in the anthropology to set it more firmly in societal contexts. LOVE that they can make little jokes and have a giggle, it really helps lighten the mood and maintain the human-ness of it. So glad I found this!

I love the way this podcast is presented! So informative but easy & enjoyable to listen to. The biology/epidemiology behind it it fascinating & I love all the opinions on ecology. I genuinely want to become an epidemiologist or conservation ecologist & have no idea how I got through each day before I discovered this podcast

I love these podcasts and the Erins. The podcasts are interesting and deep when they need to be. They are ruined a little by the girly flirty adds, switching from heartbreaking disease descriptions to telling us how cute they look in sandals really grinds on me. However the early shows are without this. They do occasionally get very giggly, again grates a little but I think this is just a manifestation of how passionately they feel about their subject matter. These very minor niggles aside, the podcasts are very VERY worth a listen.

Great info but annoying crap jokes.

Two women. Huge enthusiasm and passion. Great knowledge. Real humility.
A lesson in how to be happy, doing what you love.
These two are all that’s right with the Podcast world, imparting knowledge I’m a manner that is by turns heartbreaking and hilarious.
I wait patiently for each episode; it brightens car journeys and has reignited a fascination for infectious diseases and the people who fight to save us from them.
Thanks Erins...

I am really interested in disease and the biology behind it. I like the way that the podcast is presented as it is friendly as well as being informative and (often) pretty spooky! I liked the coronaviruses episode as I could (try to) explain to my friends about it! they are still currently freaking out about it but I am slowly being able to explain to them about it! It is really fun and interesting. Thankyou

This is one of my favourite podcasts (and I listen to a lot)! I have a degree in Biomedical Science and have had a change in career so wanted to keep up my passion in other ways, and this is exactly what I needed. They give enough detail so that it’s still interesting for someone who still knows a decent amount about the human body, but in terms that you don’t have to be an expert to understand. I’ve learnt loads from it, and more importantly it’s incredibly interesting and chill to listen to. I highly recommend!

This pair are great, their passion for the subject just oozes over the air. They manage to include an impressive amount of facts but still manage to keep a light hearted air to each episode. Definitely worth subscribing to if you have even just a passing interest is diseases and epidemiology. 5 stars for production, content and presentation.

Can’t believe I have only just discovered this podcast, it’s on the same network as my favorite murder which is how I originally heard about it.
It’s such an interesting podcast and both the hosts clearly do some really good research as all their episodes are really factually accurate and fascinating- a great mix of science and history of each disease.

I had high hopes for this podcast when I read that both the presenters are scientists. Well, you would never guess from the silly, cutesie presenting style where bacteria are Ahh, babies, cute. And everything is cool. I could learn everything about the subjects from the internet in a faction of the time and in a more mature manner. Only one episode and no more thanks.

Hosts Erin and Erin explore the world of viruses, bacteria and diseases across history in an accessibly, humourous and extraordinarily friendly way. They explain scientific terms and provide numerous examples for building a rich picture of the historical, sociological and epidemiological conditions of a variety of pathogens, including cholera, influenza, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. Highly recommend this podcast for science, medicine, health and history nerds alike!

i absolutely LOVE this podcast & completely binged it in about the course of a week!! i’ve learnt loads of things about disease that i never knew i wanted to learn and have started to do wider reading of my own.
the absolute best part about this is the erins: they obviously LOVE these topics so much and they really get their passion across and it’s absolutely infectious (pardon the pun). they talk about disease in an easily accessible way but also in a funny way so that it’s not too dire and depressing. would thoroughly recommend!!
