Description

History is full of stories we think we know. They are old and dark, but time has robbed us of perspective and clarity. They've become obscured and misunderstood. Which is why this series exists: to dig deep and shed light on some of history’s darkest moments. To help us better understand where we’ve come from. To make it Unobscured. Each season pairs narrative storytelling from Aaron Mahnke, creator of the hit podcast Lore, with prominent historian interviews. Season Two: Spiritualism

Brilliant podcast

I’m currently listening to Season 2 on Spiritualism, and it is one of the best podcasts I’ve ever heard- beautifully produced and researched. As a historian myself I am deeply impressed by the work done here.

Completely Engaging and Well Researched

I enjoyed Lore the TV show which led me to listening avidly to Lore the podcast. As much as I’m fascinated by Lore the podcast, History Unobscured is Aaron Mahnke’s crowning glory. The serialised historical topic - Season 1: Salem Witch Trials; Season 2: Spiritualism - has you hanging on every aspect of each episode’s narrative and leaves you keen to listen to the next instalment.
Both seasons so far have been fascinating. If you have a passing interest in history or the supernatural and the elements underpinning both, do not miss out on this podcast.

Aaron proves he is the master of ceremonies AGAIN!

I’ve been a follower of Aaron’s for a while now, and with Lore and his Cabinet podcast taking off, as well as his TV show and everything else, I thought I knew what to expect. I was wrong.
This particular podcast got me through 2 months of cruise ship work, listening to the extras in port time on WiFi. A true joy to hear about the Salem With Trials and the work and dedication that he spent putting into the podcast that delivered the info to us. A jewel in the crown of his work so far. Keep going, I’ll follow you all the way!

Fascinating stuff - can't wait for next series!

As an enthusiastic 'Lore' listener, this is what I've been hankering after for a long time - Aaron Mahnke taking a really long, in-depth look at a particular subject. This first series, a study of the events of the Salem witch trials, gets 'Unobscured' off to a cracking start.
Mahnke's characteristically compelling narration is interspersed by commentary from experts in the field - all of which, unsurprisingly, are captivating to listen to. Mahnke displays his characteristic eye for that strange twist, chilling detail, or unnerving coincidence that is guarunteed to send a shiver down the back of your neck. A true master storyteller at work.

Probably as good as you’re gonna get

This is a pretty decent history, in fact it is more in depth and broad reaching than many popular accounts of the trials... however it is not free of a bit of revisionism here and there. Mostly for the sake of the myth of America there is occasional mistruths about who the puritans were and how this crisis compared to European witch trials. The full expert interviews at the end of the season show from where some of that revisionist rhetoric stems.
From a storytelling perspective it’s classic lore style, which is very enjoyable. There’s a few spots where portions of narration are repeated between episodes which seems to have been a mistake in editing but it doesn’t bother too much.
You won’t find a better podcast on thus subject out there

Astonishing show

I listened to this entire series on a very long drive. A fascinating bit of research, very well presented, with the humanity needed for such a sensitive subject. I wasn’t sure if it would hold my attention but it did. Congratulations to the entire team...I can’t wait for the next series.

A full view of a little understood time

I loved this show. Writing this at the end of season one, I am sad to know it’s done. I learnt so much about Salem and witch trials and human nature from this show. A truly fantastic, well researched and his quality production. The well paced and well spoken words of Aaron mixed with real interviews with historians was a great way to teach us all the intricacies of the story.

Outstanding

As a Brit, I’m ashamed to admit that I was fairly ignorant when it came to American history but since becoming addicted to the fascinating series of podcasts by Aaron Mahnke, including the incomparable ‘Lore’, my knowledge has broadened considerably. I wish history lessons in school had been as entertaining as this.
Aaron’s latest series has been a real joy as well as deepening my understanding of this disturbing episode in American history. All I really knew about Salem had come from Arthur Miller’s ‘The Crucible’. This series fleshes out the real people involved in this event, bringing them to life in a way that makes them relatable and all too human. I can’t recommend this podcast enough. Another brilliant creation. Many thanks, Aaron.

Well researched

Lots of background research make this really interesting, however the narrator is a bit emotionless and dry which detracts from the impact of the subject. I have learned more from this podcast than all of my history lessons!

Fascinating!

As a big fan of Lore, I was excited to hear that Mahnke was going to do a more in-depth, extended examination of historical episodes beginning with the Salem Witch Trials, and Unobscured didn’t disappoint! He brings his trademark style to the narration, includes various experts to expand on what he’s saying, and goes in depth in ways one rarely hears with this topic. I’ve found every minute fascinating. Well done, Aaron!!!

Aaron, I love you, but Salisbury Cathedral is very much not in Italy. It’s in Salisbury, England.

Mahnke is a tour de force

I adore Lore and Cabinet of Curiosities, but when I heard that he was going to create a podcast about the Salem Witch Trials, I practically died from happiness.
His command of storytelling and way of speaking is utterly spellbinding. All of Mahnke’s podcasts keep me company on my journey to my lectures, and every time an episode is finished, I’ve learnt something new.
If you love all things history or want to know more about the Salem Witch Trials, I implore you to download the first episode and give it a listen. Heck, download all of Aaron Mahnke’s podcasts and enjoy the spooky ride. You won’t be disappointed.

Absolutely fantastic!!

I have only been listening to the LORE podcasts for the past few months and i cannot get enough of it.
The way in which the stories are written takes you on a journey full of vivid descriptions and full of information.
Arron’s voice and delivery of the story is unrivalled in all the podcasts i have listened to.
This latest chapter in the LORE collection is possibly the best yet.
Keep up the truly excellent work!!
