Description

We’re at our most vulnerable when we go to our doctors. We trust the person at the other end of that scalpel. We trust the hospital. We trust the system.
Christopher Duntsch was a neurosurgeon who radiated confidence. He claimed he was the best in Dallas. If you had back pain, and had tried everything else, Dr. Duntsch could give you the spine surgery that would take your pain away.
But soon his patients started to experience complications, and the system failed to protect them. Which begs the question: who - or what - is that system meant to protect?
From Wondery, the network behind the hit podcast Dirty John, DR. DEATH is a story about a charming surgeon, 33 patients and a spineless system. Reported and hosted by Laura Beil.

Very Good

A great true crime podcast. Really interesting story and not just the usual true crime template. The whole thing is riveting, it doesn’t get long, drawn out and boring like a lot of other true crime podcasts have begun to.

Excellent series. Laura is a great presenter.

I really liked the series. Laura is a great presenter and the story flowed nicely. The only thing I did not like was hearing the same old adds and plugs for the same podcasts over and over again. I found myself reaching for the fast forward button.
I understand that you have to advertise to make money, so please vary the adds and try to make them interesting and relevant.

Chilling

This is such a good podcast- difficult to listen to at times because of the level of suffering. The piecing together of the events is brilliant and hoping justice is done.

Unbearably excellent

I’m listening to the first episode and less than 5 minutes in I’m horrified by what I’m hearing. In just under 20 minutes this podcast has driven me to tears of sympathy.
This is an outstanding podcast revealing what happens when money, medical practice and ethics collide. There was a Doctor Death in the UK, Harold Shipman, but he killed a few patients per year, mostly elderly, over a long time frame. I understand even less how a surgeon can operate and maim and kill so many people and no one report it sooner. Especially in the USA where the country is infamous for suing anyone and everybody. No doubt as I listen to the rest of the series I will find out.
Listen with caution and everyone check the reputation of any service professional you are going to use. Buyer Beware!

Very well done.

Amazing podcast, I hadn’t heard of this and it’s like listening to horror movie at times. Laura delivers this brilliantly. Can’t stop listening.

Incredible story - top notch production

I have quickly become a fan of a lot of wondery podcasts - all well researched and produced to an exceptional standard
Researcher Laura does a great job with this story and I listened to 5 epsisodes back to back without any lack of interest creeping in
Better than some of the best audiobooks I have enjoyed to help a long journey pass
Thanks

Dr Death

My first ever Podcast and what a corker! Loved it from start to finish. Had me on the edge of my seat and evoked many emotions in me ( I must of pulled some strange faces whilst listening!) Also a great insight to the American health care system as a British person.

Fantastic reporting

It’s my first podcast documentary that I’ve listened to and I think was fantastic! Laura does excellent work on uncovering who this Doctor is and how the USA’s healthcare system needs to be rehauled.

Woooow

Shouldnt this highlight all the issues in the American healthcare system? I would not want to live in America if i wanted to survive well, anything tbh

Malignant Intent

How this criminally flawed physician was able to evade personal responsibility for his reckless behaviour and carry on ‘operating’ for so long simply beggars belief. I couldn’t believe how many opportunities there were to stop this guy ruining other lives. It just goes to show where money is involved other considerations come into play and morality, justice and leadership fly out the window. Also disturbing is the indifference with which each individual medical centre can off load a known incompetent surgeon to maim and possibly kill further patients down the line.
This was an riveting series, look forward to more of the same.

Well researched...

I enjoyed this very much - listened to it straight off, the whole lot. Like the voice of the narrator - sometimes voices can be a bit harsh to listen to, but this wasn’t the case in this podcast. Aren’t we lucky to have such interesting things to access - for free!

Luminary - not interested!

I loved Dr Death, it was absolutely terrifying but gripping and had me hooked.
I am writing a review because having subscribed to Dr Death I have had a ‘sample’ of another Wordery podcast arriving in my phone - a podcast which is firmly behind the paywall of Luminary which I can’t afford.
Dr Death was worth five stars but I’m only giving three because of the pressure to make me listen to a Luminary podcast. I fast forwarded through it all.
Just stop it.

Sinister......

Great podcast, beautifully narrated and makes you feel sympathetic towards the victims and sick to your stomach when hearing about Dr Death. I hope this podcast does a piece on Harold Shipman Doctor/serial killer from Nottingham, England who murdered 250 of his patients.

Interesting

While this podcast is interesting and intriguing, I find the ads midway through it are distracting and annoying. If it weren’t for this I’d probably rate it higher as I have binge listened to the first five episodes so far. Just those ads that make it annoying, they’d be better placed at the beginning or the end like several others I’ve listened to

Excellent Reporting and Narration

I listen to true crime podcasts all the time while doing chores and gardening. Some I have had to abandon in the past due to the style of narration which can be annoying or downright intrusive. I like Laura Beil, she is mellow, not hyper, and not dragging it along either. More on the style of Sarah who did Serial. Fascinating story too. Well done!

Very American, to the point where it just makes you cringe. Slightly over dramatic narrator & Feels very he said, she said at times but it’s an overall interesting story.

Amazing!

This podcast is truly amazing, if like me you love listening to cases that are on the darker side this podcast is for you! It goes into depths of what went wrong in the surgeries and how it all pieces together in his life. The detail in the interviews are fascinating and there is so much information! Highly recommend!

Fascinating

The main episodes are interesting, seriously fascinating material and well told. Only criticism is the “update episodes” are still good but are used to plug another podcast host and his podcast and he is extremely different in tone to the normal podcast and this is a bit jarring. But still worth a listen to the “extra” episodes as they answer a lot of questions thrown up from the main episodes.

Terrific story. As a doctor myself, this take was horrific and unsettling. I valued the inclusion of comments from Dr Death’s colleagues. I thought the presentation was superb.

Great topic but too many adverts

Pod caster has done some great stuff with up and vanished but seems to have been cashing in on adverts with more recent work. It breaks up the mood and story telling of the podcast.

Sort the advertising

Loved this podcast until I heard the new ‘episode’ where Mike from Sword and Scale featured. Disappointed the podcast associates with him.
