Extinction Event moonlights as a true crime podcast in this cross-genre special episode. It’s nature-meets-murder mystery as we delve into the unsolved disappearance of the famous mountain lion known as P22 (Puma 22). Join our under qualified and overly speculative detective squad as we explore the mysterious circumstances surrounding the killing of Los Angeles’s beloved big cat, and with the help of AI, provide some alternative theories of our own.

Flirting with extinction

There are extinct creatures you’ve heard about, there are others you never knew existed. In the zoo of dodos, Extinction Event is the podcast wake, the uplifting eulogy at a good funeral.
Melissa Thomas does the mammoth task of research and teaching, and Jack Collier is the auroch in a china shop with his sabre-sharp wisecracks — the cocky auk at the back of the class absorbing all he can learn. My take is that there’s an unresolved flirtatious buzz between the two, a nice contrast to the sadly non-existence of the creatures in question. I’ll immediately press play whenever a new episode pops into my subscription. You will too.
Oh... a quick btw to Melissa... tomato/tomato... Neander-TAL ! 😉

Love this pod

Doesn’t exactly make you proud to be a human, but I enjoy the irreverence of the Melissa & Jack team.
Keep it up!

Entertaining Extinctions

Pretty surprised that nobody else has reviewed this on Apple Podcasts yet.
I’ll be honest: to begin with, Melissa and Jack’s relatively light-hearted takes on various animal extinctions struck me as potentially questionable - a lot of people have pretty strong attachments to a lot of the extinct animals they cover. However, it works well, and helps to keep each episode fresh and entertaining. There’s a lot of scope for other animals to be covered, especially Pleistocene megafauna — prehistoric Australia especially, please!
I also absolutely love the pod soundtrack (I like to think that the female and male singing voices are Melissa and Jack themselves).
