Our adventure begins with the Grandmothers, a footnoted sister, more mounted heads than fireplaces (which is saying something), and some thick-ass man-thighs.
As we make our way through French history, we'll learn about why Paris was an "immense workshop of putrefaction," take the most horrifying raft ride of all time, get Gothic and emo with a spicy lady named Germaine, and ponder whose day that small newsie boy just ruined.
Along the way, I mess up the same joke twice, tell an inappropriate story, and make us all do a thought experiment that, in retrospect, might not have been necessary.
What did those three brothers do? When is the best time to take an unexpected hunting trip? What happens if your bird goes to hell? We'll discuss. And, we'll have a Merrrrrrry Christmas in the Languedoc. Two of them; two Merrrrrry Christmases. Yay!
I swear, I'm fine. All of this is healthy.

Description

A recklessly deep dive into art and art history with someone who has absolutely no background in either topic. I work through one artist at a time, focusing on the more...entertaining...aspects of their lives.

Caravaggio

Although the humour is brash and trashy I have to admit it does occasionally make me laugh ; it's also fair to say he does do his research .

Amazing storyteller

I'm hooked on this podcast. The host gets me interested in people and history that I didn't expect to find interesting, he makes it all very dynamic and thrilling. He puts so much effort into finding out background information so you can understand the context of the artist's story, and then tells the story in an amusing and lively way - very impressive.

I’m so grateful

He made this podcast for me… someone interested but ignorant. Utter genius in the art of education by stealth …. Making learning so much fun that you forget jut how much you are learning… but when you stop to reflect on it, your are learning one hell of a lot. Thank you for the knowledge, the context and the many, many laughs. I genuinely cannot praise it enough.

Funny and informative

Love this podcast, love everything about it, the detail, the comedy delivery and honesty. Never pulls any punches with the highs and lows of the artists. Authentic and totally enjoyable, whilst extremely educational. Thank you.

Caravaggio

This is refreshingly non academic or serious. It is, however very informative and relatable.

Relentless Fun

Loved Picasso and Pollack, perfect accompaniment for lockdown chores, walks, bike rides etc. Leaves you wanting to look at the paintings with a fresh perspective. Recommended

Laugh out loud fun

I was sceptical when the presenter stated he knew nothing about art or art history. After only a few minutes I decided that there was a comedic side to art and it’s history that needed to be explored - and that’s where the fun started!

Love it

So glad this podcast is back! It’s really fun and clearly comes from a real love of exploring and learning about art. The subjects are well-researched and the injection of humour stops everything from getting too dark

Awesome

This podcast is fantastic, educational, well researched, engaging, well delivered. The comedic delivery is on point. In a world where finding a non pretentious art history podcast is hard to find I’m really enjoying the bad language and humour. Thank you for doing what you do.

Utterly brilliant, irreverent, intelligent and laugh out loud funny.

This is simply the best podcast I have ever listened to. Anyone who can make Jackson Pollock’s ‘repeated boxcar drifter hobo rape’ something at once horrific and hilarious is some kind of genius. I have learned so much with the absolute minimum of effort and had such a good time along the way. You’ll never look at a Caravaggio the same way again...
More PLEASE!

Informed, witty, right-on brilliance

I very rarely leave reviews, but wanted to for this as it’s such a quality podcast. It’s absolutely fantastic, and has been a huge help getting me through lockdown, so thank you for that.
Michael Anthony’s dry sense of humour is entertaining anyway, but he’s clearly naturally curious and intelligent, and has read a lot, so that it’s great to learn from him about these fascinating artists. He’s got a really great way of explaining things to make them understandable and memorable- I’m learning a lot while also being entirely entertained.
I studied art for a few years, and while this podcast is absolutely suitable for beginners, it’s also completely fascinating for people who’ve already studied the topic, and not patronising or slow which is refreshing.
Also, the presenter’s voice isn’t annoying which is a bonus for a podcast!
All round excellent- thanks Michael Anthony, can’t wait for more.

Art history from a different perspective

If you’re looking for gushing praise for the artist’s brushwork this isn’t for you. But if you’re fascinated by what makes great artists tick and how they play the circumstances they find themselves in, and how they’ve got bad breath and warts just like you, but somehow they can create art transcending the mundane, then this guy gives you insights that you will never forget. He’s very direct and can be crude... just like real life. Seriously worth listening to.

My actual favorite podcast

So, I actually downloaded and for the first time opened Apple Podcasts JUST so I could give a thumbs-up to Artholes. Discovered it during the Coronavirus quarantine. Love the details, backstory, and humor with which these artists are presented. How the era, the joys, the sorrows, all influenced and defined their works. Love this podcast, keep up the good work!
