Magical realism or not?

I don’t know how to email y’all, but sending a message as I am listening to your Famished Road (Bookclub read) - the man has repeatedly been on the record as saying that it isn’t magical realism. For me that is a game changer on how to read the book
The same has happened for countless booked. The Sellout is a Great American Novel. The author never wants people to read it as a satire (which was printed in on the cover of int’l copies).
If you try and group a book into genres and subgenres that they don’t want to be in… your mind is already closed on reading it.
From this one listen you seem like interesting folk (nice Radiohead trivia!). My suggestion is really the further outside your wheelhouse your selection the more homework you do - and if you’re still at a dead end, reach out and find someone to help you and your listeners….
