Made a big mistake to use surnames. It ruins the familiarity that makes Brexitcast such a huge success.
Join old pals and BBC journalists Emily Maitlis and Jon Sopel for the latest gossip from the campaign trail of the 2020 US presidential election race.
Since Trump was elected both the USA and the rest of the world has asked why and how? The BBC is a bit slow off the mark creation by this podcast, however so far so good. John Sopel is a great journalist percolating lots of politics to bite size chunks making it very understandable and easy to digest. The couple I have heard are very interesting especially the explanation of the caucuses! For a deeper dive in US politics try pod save America.
Why should these people’s opinions even matter? I don’t need two white BBC millionaires telling me how I need to think about geopolitics. Plenty of excellent independent podcasts out there that aren’t pushing an agenda or if they are don’t try and hide it like the BBC. Democracy Now is one I would recommend for US politics as a starting point.
Love this podcast. ok its new but its already become one of my favs. Love Emily Matlis. Makes a great team with John S. More informal than typical news prog like newsnight etc but still very informative. Better than Brexitcast as it leaves out the rubbish quizzes and games but still has the chat and banter.
Decent first episode, but I was somewhat alarmed by Jon Sopel’s casual dismissal of Joe Biden’s rallies as dull, lacking a good line for the news bulletins, etc. It’s exactly this kind of media attitude that helped unleash the Trump nightmare on us in the first place, and it’s worrying that Sopel and co appear to have learned nothing.
Love the BBC and will continue listening to this podcast but I hope ‘Sopes’ may reflect on this at some point.
With so many enemies in power why is the BBC using licence fee money to pay for Emily Maitliss to fly out to the USA to cover an election where we don’t have a dog in the fight? Could have been done from a studio in London.
Why are my taxes being wasted on this crap?? BBC have no need to be making podcasts, it is a crowded enough market already.
Great first episode.
A near perfect mix of deep knowledge, detailed explanations, humour and insight all neatly packaged in a snappy podcast. Another potential award winner by editor Dino Sofos?
I wasn’t entirely sure I could handle the next 38 weeks and 5 days of relentless US election coverage on all outlets but based on E1 it seems “Maites and Sopes” will make it more than bearable (and at least it’s a change from the last 3 1/2 years of Brexit).
PS according to google, Americast is a unique patented process that fully bonds a high quality porcelain surface with an enameling grade steel and a molded reinforcement composite backing. Sounds about right!
Looking forward to E2 and possibly a few klaxons.
It’s Brexitcast but in the wrong country with the wrong presenters. Jon and Emily (Jemily?) are great, plus they swear, which is always a bonus. An excellent podcast, highly recommended!
In days gone by the BBC gave us Alistair Cooke and his Letters from America. Always charming, insightful and generous of spirit. I can well imagine him chuckling at how the venerable caucus system of Iowa had stymied the requirements of modern technology. Here the BBC’s current affairs poster woman Emily Maitlis refers to the Democrat caucus as a ‘shitshow’. Meanwhile the BBC’s 60 year old North America correspondent suggests we refer to him as ‘Sopes’. No thanks.
First episode was informative, fun and clear and personable.
Look forward to more of the same for November and beyond.
With Brexit cast over a new cast to enjoy as we hurtle to November and that this could be. Funny as f.... too
