Their weekend ‘preview’ is largely the betting odds. Utter sell outs

No coverage on certain Prem teams like west ham. Huge bias toward Man U, Liverpool etc. and villa coz of presenters support for them.

Poor unbalanced journalism from a group that claim to be above all that.

This podcast would be really good if they lost the betting guy who just crams in pointless odds. I find it really hypocritical that The Athletic seems to preach on a number of issues yet still shoves betting adverts down your ears.

Not sure why US pundits and the US national team are getting so much air time on this pod. Has the US all of a sudden become a football powerhouse? Wales, by contrast are barely getting a mention. Very odd. On the positive side, I appreciate that the athletic have (so far) not given up on the issues surrounding this World Cup. Please do keep it up.

This a football show stop bringing politics into it

Lots of conversations about the ethics of the World Cup host and yet not one of them touched on that of their own sponsors’ nation. The double standards and lack of awareness this displays are bewildering.

Mark say’s Newcastle have paid big bucks for players like Bruno(£35m), Botman(£35m), Trippier (£13m) & that’s why Newcastle are where they are!!

Remind me how much Manchester Utd, Everton and Chelsea have spent over the years!

Please do your research

The occasional platitude reminding listeners to “gamble responsibly” can’t mask the fact that this is just a constant stream of potential odds, questions based on “who’s the favourite”, “what are the odds” and “what would be an good each way” together with chats around how great it is to be in WhatsApp groups with mates discussing betting options.

I appreciate that 365 are subtle sponsors but this doesn’t pass for journalism and a pre scripted four seconds reminding “punters” sorry listeners to consider the incredible harm gambling does when triggered is insulting.

Hang your head in sham The Athletic, you’ve totally lost the balance.

It’s a good show through the week, until that is the weekend preview, such a shame that everything is odds and betting…then a poor attempt to make it alright by pushing Gambling Aware

Always a good listen. Smart and insightful guests and fantastic hosts. Especially want to give a shout out to Dan Bardell. He’s got a great sense of humour and always keeps the guests on their toes. Also nice to hear a Brummie accent when so much football podcasting is dominated by Southern voices!

Right let’s get one thing straight don’t speed up the podcast as it doesn’t work ……

The horn used in the jingle is so loud I flinch every time I think it’s about to play. I have to preempt the ad breaks in order to prevent being deafened

Great podcast, done by intelligent people for intelligent people, well about football intelligence

I enjoy the content, but the jingle is about twice as loud as the podcast so whenever the breaks come, my ears get blasted.

21 minutes of covering England’s friendly then 5 minutes on Gareth Bale the day after Wales V Austria

Really enjoy the majority of the episodes, unfortunately I have to skip the episodes with Dan Bardell, I can’t listen to him I’m afraid - flat droning is unlistenable… everything else excellent!

The general talk is okay but the constant dropping in of betting odds is ridiculous. Way too regular and it just becomes annoying comparing teams’ odds.

I love the Athletic but they have crossed a line by having a Bet365 guy on the show to chat odds.

The relationship between elite football in the UK and gambling firms is already too close for comfort, and needs to be reigned in, not deepened.

Shame on the Athletic for allowing the termites to bury deep inside their operations.

…my first experience of the podcast was the episode on increased problems at football grounds. It was really interesting but largely spoiled by one of the presenter’s liberal use of the “f” word. Quite ironic given the topic touched on respect and fan anti-social behaviour. She also seemed determined to shoehorn comments about racism & Brexit into the mix. It spoilt an otherwise engaging programme.

Mark Chapman is excluded from any criticism as he is a great host. However, the rest of the cast is filled with journalists who take themselves way too seriously and hosts who are annoying and quite frankly aren’t very intelligent. For a company that must have so many highly intelligent people on their books, their choice of hosts on the midweek podcast is an insult to the audience.

Really great pod, with interesting guests and great content. Unfortunately I have to avoid the weekend preview which is peppered with betting odds throughout from a Bet 365 representative. There’s plenty of gambling advertising in football, but this takes it to a new level (to the Friday pod’s detriment).

Don’t advertise “Ian Wright” if he’s not on the f’ing show!

The best football review/comment platform out there. Impartial, detailed and precise of the opinions the panel. So many trash out there and these guys are a breath of fresh air. Keep up with the good work lads!

Really enjoyed these 2 podcasts. The gulf is widening between the EPL and EFL and needs shortening otherwise there will be a lot more Bury’s which isn’t good for anyone in English football. Rick was really clear in his explaining his views and was quick to call out the EPL terminology.

Too many Gambling adds

Turned off when Marcus Alonso was criticised by presenter for refusing to take the knee.

The football content can be very good (depending on guest/host) but why does it have to be incessantly peppered with odds?

I pay a subscription to the Athletic so surely you don’t need to rely on the betting dollar as much as free podcasts?

It’s too much, every conversation is littered with it. I want to know opinion not what the odds (I zone out) are and we shouldn’t accept sport and gambling being inextricably linked. Gambling is ruinous. Betting companies are absolute parasites and this is the worst experience I’ve had of this ruining a podcast.

Used to really enjoy this podcast until it became just another vehicle to push gambling. All the analysis just tailored to betting and lack of any other real football substance or personality makes it such a bore. And constant ads! Love the athletic usually but this is poor form. Only reason I gave it 2 stars is because the business of sport is decent

Almost unlistenable if you are not interested in gambling. Odds and tips are weaved into the analysis, leaving the show with no actual analytical value as everything is spoken of through the prism of betting. Also means the show has no moral integrity to discuss anything really. Good people I’m sure but this is just awful long betting ads, and on top of that you want us to pay the athletic? 😂 pathetic

The constant talk about gambling/odds/etc is very dull and seems completely out of touch with the direction of travel in football in general. It’s a shame because most of the other things the Athletic do are great but I’d give this one a miss.

Personally I love getting the current 14-fold accumulator offers fired at me in an unashamedly perverse fashion in order that I can hopelessly fire all my family’s savings into my online account and plunge myself in to spiralling debt. In an ideal world I’d have the disembodied head of Ray Winston screaming “IN-PLAY MARKETS” at me over and over, intimating me in to handing over my debit card details, but until that dream becomes a reality this podcast serves as a dutiful stop-gap.

The absolute genius move of having an employee of a gambling company actually host the podcasts in order that the lines between considered journalistic analysis and just basic attempts to take money from the most vulnerable, are blurred, is very impressive indeed.

This is the podcast I’ve been waiting for for years! To think that the format of this show (relentless encouragement to part with one’s cash, infrequently interspersed with an odd mention of actual football) hasn’t been adopted before now is quite incredible. I can now sleep easy, safe in the knowledge that I won’t be the only one brainwashed in to squandering my children’s inheritance on dead-end bets and that attendances at Gamblers Anonymous meetings up and down the country remain depressingly high for years to come.

It’s one thing to have gambling adverts, but to consistently refer to irrelevant odds that no one has tuned in for is really poor. Would expect better from The Athletic, why don’t they create a separate gambling podcast.

Disappointing amount of gambling adverts

I really thought considering that this was from the Athletic that there may be some content behind the ads. Unfortunately the odds on bets are constantly mentioned within the podcast therefore undermining any integrity they could have gained otherwise. Betting is a problem within the game, and being an Athletic subscriber I feel like ignoring this would be ignorant. Time for a change. Shame on the “journalists” subscribing to and providing this morally reprehensible tosh. Miss.

Why would you put a bloke on with the WORST Brummie accent you’ve ever heard in your life. Honestly listening to him drone on made my ears bleed, couldn’t focus on what he was saying. Turned off the torture to quell the bloodflow pouring out my lugs

My least favourite football podcast I listen to, passable however. Lacks humour and original thought. The Soccer Aid of podcasts

Ornstein and Chapman used to do this. 2 quality, well-sourced journos/presenters. Dan Bardell is dull and Villa-biased and Flo Lloyd Hughes doesn’t know much about football. Of course, when Marcos Alonso stopped taking the knee the pair of them made out as if he was some kind of war criminal. You’d expect that from most writers at The Athletic , though…

Where is the line between journalism and the promotion of gambling? This is a very uncomfortable listen, and so I’ve stopped listening.

Ears bleeding with this dodgy Brummie, who clearly thinks Villa are world beaters chatting nonsense about bets & a vague knowledge of football. Genuinely woeful!

Podcast used to be very good, but has just become so gambling centric. Expected better from the Athletic.

The euros coverage was great but since that it’s just been 50% betting coverage.

Better podcasts that chat football like the Times One so have unsubscribed from this one.
