Description

In this new original series from Somethin' Else, Claudia Winkleman and Professor Tanya Byron identify struggles faced by real-life parents and family members by inviting them in and hearing their story, in a one-time unscripted session with a real person. Claudia listens in to the conversation to discover how Tanya begins to unlock the story behind the issue and help find solutions.
With topics ranging from parental estrangement, gender identity, domestic violence, trauma, inheriting mental health issues, family dynamics after cancer and raising a severely disabled daughter, How Did We Get Here? is a passionate, insightful and moving experience with clear outcomes to each episode.
This podcast doesn’t tell people how to raise their children, or reconnect with family members, rather it helps people understand why, as perfectly competent adults, they can’t put into practice what they know they should do.
Each episode passes on useful links and contacts which listeners can find in the programme notes.
This is a Somethin' Else production.

This is a great podcast and I look forward to it weekly. However it goes through months and months where no content is released and despite this the subscription fee £3.50 is still charged monthly. This is a really unfair deal to us listeners. Please amend.

These sessions are absolutely phenomenal. In every one there is a learning, an insight, a reminder... something to take away and reflect upon. Every episode makes me cry and makes me stronger at the same time. I find them incredibly useful and would like to thank the production, the participants and Claudia & Tanya for an amazing contribution to the listeners.
Yes please to more seasons!

Claudia and Tania are brilliant, the people who feature are so courageous for sharing their stories and the issues discussed are often relatable on various levels. There is so much I’ve taken away from these sessions that have helped me reflect on areas of my own life. Fascinating, emotional and revelatory in equal measures.
This is my favourite podcast… and I am somewhat bereft to have finished the latest series. Please don’t leave it long before you return! ❤️

I have listened to each of all 3 series, each podcast with their own profound stories that became issues. I am absolutely fascinated & in-ore with the expertise, logic & tools Tanya hands over to every sufferer to help them see & deal with what has become so debilitating to their lives & harmful to their minds. Tanya comes across as so grounded & approachable in her role, she is undoubtably that lady we would all love to have in our friendship group. Claudia? Well, I just love Claudia, she again is another one of those ladies we would all love to have as a friend. Her fun loving warmth & caring friendship comes across in every podcast towards the story teller & of course with her great friend Tanya! You are both so lucky to have each other. Listening to your podcasts (I am sure) has given your listeners a helping hand on how best to deal with some of the troubles they or friends & family may be going through. I applaud you both for allowing us all to listen in & educate ourselves at the same time. I look forward to series 4. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. Jude Guildford.

Please, more!

Tanya, you have inspired me to begin a psychology masters degree and Claudia, you are so warm, funny and must make all of the people feel at ease at such a difficult time for them. Amazing women helping amazing people. Give us more!

I have so much respect for Tanya Byron, and Claudia adds a lightness and different perspective which is helpful…, but I’m finding the Hello Fresh ads, in the middle of some distressing topics, odd and even insensitive… otherwise 5 star

I’m only irked that I don’t have constant new ones waiting for me because as soon as a new one drops, I’m on it. So well partnered are Claudia and Tanya for this podcast to me it is perfection. I’m a trainee therapist, and I am constantly blown away but Prof Tanya’s analysis, observation and how she contains the guest on the podcast. Claudia is a fantastic host, and adds to keeping an informal, friendly tone, whilst also showing deep, and genuine compassion. Love you both and this podcast!!xx

Just recently discovered so listening back to back and don’t want it to stop! I feel like I can relate to everyone in some way, some more than others, and found the stories incredibly moving that have been shared by your brave and wonderful guests. The dynamic between Claudia and Tanya is fantastic and both so talented at what they do.
Such a shame to read other reviews and find I will have to pay once I’ve finished listening to what there is now. One of the biggest obstacles for mental health is financial, not being able to afford a counsellor etc. So disappointing this is another way that people will lose out on this incredibly helpful and insightful podcast series.
Well done ladies, you are both amazing and I’m so grateful to you for what you have done 😊

Hi Tan & Claud,
Thank you for sharing this podcast. I absolutely love the series but I found this episode so incredibly moving. Lottie came across as so strong and resilient; she is an inspiration. Love these podcasts. I have been to therapy in the past but we all continue to learn and peel back the layers of that old onion!! This podcast is so interesting, human, warm and insightful. I love the dynamic of Claud and Tarn. I scroll to find a title that ‘speaks to me’ and find something in each play - comfort, a penny dropping moment, a way to laugh at myself, a way to let go….
Thank you, beautiful work gals 😇

Really enjoy the podcast and find it very helpful. I’m very disappointed that at this challenging time they have chosen to ask for a paid subscription to a channel that has extremely minimal content for a fee to get all the episodes, especially as each episode already has so many adverts. Wouldn’t have expected this from Claudia Winkleman or Tanya Byron, very disappointing.

This is a wonderful podcast that helps to support people with their mental health. As we know mental health support is not affordable to all so to have a podcast like this has been invaluable. I was therefore so disappointed to see the latest episodes advertised with a subscription requirement. We are all happy to listen to adverts especially those read by Claudia so why does it now need to be monetised in this way. I really want to listen to these latest episodes but I’m afraid there’s no way I’m subscribing to do so.

I absolutely love this series, Claudia and Tanya are a brilliant team and the help and support they offer the people they speak to is always spot on.
Tanya has the amazing ability to get right to the heart of the issue through her careful questions and you can feel the weight lifting off the person as they come to a new realisation.
Claudia has a natural intuition and immediately comes alongside the person and helps them to feel at ease which enables Tanya to come in and work her magic.
At the end of each episode you are left feeling there has been a huge shift in understanding for the brave people who feature in this series. Please keep making more.

I just want to thank you so much for this amazing podcast that you both work so brilliantly together on. I hope you continue to do this indefinitely as there are always such nuggets of wisdom and insight that we can all take on board in our daily lives in the complex world of families and parenting. I work with special needs children and many families so some of the content is so relevant and I love hearing how you both talk to such vulnerable guests with such care, delicate attention.

The session with Maya was incredibly moving. What an awful lot she has lived with. I really hope she is able to continue to process her experiences in a way which allows her to feel more ‘even’. I’m grateful to all the participants for taking part as there are always experiences for me as a listener to resonate with in some way, and the insights from Tanya & Claude are always very helpful.

Superficial and inadequate

PinkRupee

2021-07-27
Shocked at how superficial and somewhat judgemental the session with James was.It sounds as though he had somewhat emotionally suppressive parents – they didn’t want to know about his distress at moving, and probably this was a pattern of how they dealt with his emotions which in all likelihood is what has led to his feelings of worthlessness, lack of trust, a need for predictability in the world around him (control), and above all a sense he can only rely on himself. Tanya’s response that it was something about his sensitive personality rather than a result of emotional neglect (worked with now as ‘complex PTSD) will only have reinforced this. I am surprised - her columns are usually extremely insightful. I hope he finds his way to understanding childhood emotional neglect and trauma and defence mechanisms and to someone who can properly help him unravel it and enable him to trust himself and others rather than this superficial, unhelpful intervention. I didn’t think much of the mutual self congratulation at the end either!
