The Apology Episode

with Sonja Mitchell of Jumpship Beers
Time: 47:07
How was your Christmas / New Year / Dry January / Lockdown 3 / Homeschooling?
It's been two months since Matt & I last had the time to record a podcast. Well actually that's not QUITE true... we did manage to met briefly between Christmas and New Year to record some World Cup of AF matches around the back of bike shed. What has the world come to?
We also recorded an interview with Sonja Mitchell - the Managing Director and 'Beer Admiral' of Jumpship Beers. You might remember that Matt once described Sonja's flagship 'Yardarm' as "A bit watery" and asserted that the 'Made by Sonja' on the side of the can was just a made-up marketing ploy.
So I was really looking forward to this interview - mostly because of how awkward Matt would be! We finally got around to recording it a few days before Christmas - but I've been REALLY busy ever since and by the time I got around to editing the interview it had dated really badly.
Thankfully Sonja is one of the nicest people around and agreed to re-record the interview. So here it is.
Enjoy!
(PS - also included some more first round matches of the WC of AF... including Sonja's Yardarm against an Aldi AF beer. It'd be AWFUL if Matt put through the Aldi beer. Wouldn't it...)

Description

When Geoff turned 40 he decided to take a year off drinking. This wasn’t very popular with his friend Matt, who likes drinking, and thinks Geoff will turn into a really boring friend.
This podcast is an exploration of sobriety, male drinking culture, lager, mid-life crisis and friendship.

Interesting

Slightly different take on a sobriety podcast with some good discussions. Geoff sounds like a great bloke and his honesty and curiosity about his journey is really interesting to listen to.
I can’t tell if Matt is playing a role as a counterpoint to Geoff’s sobriety, and is saying certain things to highlight the toxic masculinity within British drinking culture; or whether he’s genuinely that unsupportive, boorish, and insensitive. Either way, there are times where discussions would have been better if his mic was off.

Great listen

I’m a former colleague of Matt and a big fan of his ‘social nature’. Glad you are still ‘wet’! This is a terrific listen, very honest and relatable. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to give sobriety a try, but also to anyone wanting to understand that decision whilst not personally taking the step. Friendship will prevail!! I salute you both and hats off to your sobriety exercise Geoff (but won’t be joining you any time soon) Laura xx

Easyjet lager

I'll have you know that I had 12 bottles of non-alcoholic lager on my last Easyjet flight to Alicante...and I wasn't even drunk. So there.

Good luck Geoff

I do know Penno, and I have drunk alcohol with him in the past. As such, I am startled at how polished and insightful this podcast is. Geoff, you are clearly a consummate professional. Keep it up chaps, very entertaining! (Dan Davies)

Dry Q1

I’ve both worked and lived with Matt and either can send you to drink. I didn’t know he was doing this podcast until today (12.02.20) and coincidently I’m aiming for a dry Q1 myself, looking forward to the health one next up as that’s what I’m really interested in..

Witty not wet

Highly recommend: saved me a fortune in ale. Like a fascinating ‘down the boozer’ chat with these two renowned Balhamites, without getting your wallet out.
