E174 - Stef Reid: You can’t always change the world, but you can always change yourself

Time: 1:02:57
Stef Reid is a track and field Paralympian, who competes for Team GB. She is a World Champion, four-time Paralympian, triple Paralympic medallist, and five-time world record holder. Stef has a degree in biochemistry, and recently starred in the British reality TV show Dancing On Ice 2022.
In this episode she shares the story of the boating accident that caused the loss of her foot as a teenager and the struggle that followed. After her accident Stef struggled with a change in identity, feeling like her only identity was being an athlete she worried there was nothing more she could offer. Opening up about what helped her through this difficult time, Stef discusses the importance of allowing others to help you and welcoming team-work.
Having had a series of coaches, with varying methods, Stef shares what she looks for in a coach and how she learns from them. Rather than asking questions, for Stef, the learning comes from watching. The things that set people apart are the way they handle the mundane aspects of life…
They delve into imposter syndrome, self-doubt and embracing failure.

Hosting every conversation is sports broadcaster Jake Humphrey and leading organisational psychologist Damian Hughes. Jake is currently BT Sport’s Premier League anchor and former lead presenter of BBC’s Formula One coverage. Damian is an author and professor who continues to work with leading sports organisations to create a high-performing culture.

Jake ruins is

Great content, but Jake spoils it. Every episode he will make the conversation about him at least 5 times. He speaks like he’s a high performance athlete and it’s so jarring. It didn’t used to bother me as much, but I’ve seriously stopped the last few half way through as I can’t take listening to him any more. Please do the odd episode without Jake so I can’t listen again.

I don’t think a podcast has ever moved me to start writing and filling note books and cards from advice and information from a superb variety of guests and speakers. There are takeaways from every single one on how we can make some changes and make better decisions, life lessons, etc.
Its extremely impactful and I try to listen to an episode as often as possible, even if its revisiting old ones.
A must listen

Damo, Jake - You have saved my life

Dear Damo, Dear Jake,
This will sound completely hyperbolic, but I just wanted to let you know that you guys have saved my life.
I’m a similar age to you both and a high performer in my particular field but this year I have suffered a lot. I have worked through an agonising depression and very sadly my wife and I are in the midst of separating too.
Throughout it all though I have found your podcast such a source of positivity and strength. And Jake in particular your recent short note about thinking around how to approach the mundanities of life in 2023 was a gift. Thank you.
All my very best to you both
MJH

This podcast is my go to especially if my head is in a different place.
The best so far for me is the Barry Hearn episode, some may think he’s arrogant however the way he thinks and looks at the world for me is spot on.
Keep up the good work guys
Nath

This is an epic podcast but would be great if there could be a run of conversations that aren’t brought back to ‘Jake Humphrey’. More Damian, he’s superb

Used to be my absolute go-to, and there are still incredible conversations to be found here. Has started to drift into couple of bad habits: repetitive Qs/format; asking leading questions; too long adverts/intro. Hope will get back on course!

I am a self employed consultant and don’t have a team to rely on. I also have underlying medical conditions which make life and work difficult and this pod helps a lot. I listen to it in the morning in the gym and it has helped me challenge my thinking around balancing illness and ambition. It feels like a little learning and development team or mentoring in my phone and I need that to keep going.
Thank you.

After finding this podcast a few months ago, I went back to the very first podcast and just working through each episode. Hooked! Love the variance in guests and I am finding a learning point or more from each episode. It’s even let me zone out and focus on the podcast whilst running long distance. Please keep this going and thank you!

Working in a busy Paediatric A&E department about to hit winter pressures with staff who are burnt out and pulled daily into unfamiliar clinical areas to cover gaps, there was so much to take away from Jost Capito’s episode. Making the team feel they all had a voice, working towards a single goal, appreciating the wins as a united front, the open door policy, (i could go on) was a really interesting listen and food for thought. And please don’t take offence Jake but you let Jost just go where he wanted, with you talking slightly less than usual, which I also liked. Possibly my favourite so far!

Well worth a listen

I discovered this podcast a few months ago and say that it’s absolutely brilliant. Lifting the lid on high performance but more importantly for the new, the person behind the success. If you haven’t subscribed yet, go and do it now. Find someone who inspires you and see what really makes them tick. Thanks very much for this

Thank you for bringing the Owen O’Kane conversation to the podcast. The more I hear people like Owen talk, the more I wonder why we don’t teach these skills to young people though the curriculum and to all new parents! What kind of society would we create?

Great concept quite purely executed by Jake Humphrey who wants to make it all about him.
Also, sponsorship from spurious ‘tea’ companies which claim to change your life and American Express (yes largely a susceptible audience I expect) just takes away any element of credibility

A couple of years ago I had a particularly torrid experience with my line manager, this lasted for a period of three months, over Christmas. It was absolutely dreadful. I am still at the same company, I still have the same line manager. I have leant so much about myself, my capacity and resilience. Listening to many of your guests, we all have to learn from periods that really challenge us. Believing in your ability and being authentic is essential. Thank you to you and your guests because your podcast has most definitely helped me reflect and move forward.

Wonderful podcast but I feel like sometimes Jake can come across as if he thinks the podcast is ultimately about him- sometimes the long monologues can be a bit too much, especially considering the insight I’m by far the most interested in is from the guest

As many people have said, these podcasts are amazing; life changing even. I find the content engaging with numerous tips and advice that can be put into practice immediately. Jake and Damien have a great rapport and the ability to let their guests speak, but also know when to ask the follow up questions that get to the deeper points.

I changed job a year ago this week, and my new commute is the perfect length to digest a new dose of inspiration and positivity.
This pod is a must for anyone looking to look inwardly about becoming a better version of themselves, through humility, perseverance, and accountability.
In my life, I’ve faced my own challenges like adoption from birth, being born with one ear, and having a prosthetic one fitted almost 30 years ago. This pod is a constant reminder that you don’t have to be a sports star or business leader to have overcome your own great life challenges.
Damien and Jake, thank you for your unwavering energy to bring this pod to us all.

What a kind, emotionally intelligent and honest person he was! Thank you Kasper! My son has now proclaimed that he will be a premier league keeper… watch this space ☺️🙌
