Introducing Power: Hugh Hefner

Introducing Power: Hugh Hefner

Time: 4:53
Who was Hugh Hefner? Centerfold models, Playboy Bunnies, and other women from the Playboy founder’s inner circle, like TV personality and author Holly Madison, tell journalist Amy Rose Spiegel their side of his story. We hear how Playboy changed their lives, for better and for worse. Beyond the bunny tails are darker questions: What actually went on at the notorious Playboy Mansion? How can we square Hefner's progressive legacy with his abuse of vulnerable people? What can the Playboy saga tell us about sex and power—then and now?

Description

Fertility doctor Jan Karbaat was renowned for getting amazing results. Women who were desperate for children would visit him at his Rotterdam clinic and leave pregnant. But when the clinic closed, rumours began about the methods Karbaat used to achieve his success. The children conceived at the clinic - the Karbaat Kids - began asking difficult questions about what happened to their mothers.
What happened in Dr Karbaat’s clinic? From Somethin’ Else, The Immaculate Deception is a story about a doctor who was determined to create life - by any means possible. Reported and hosted by Jenny Kleeman.
This is a Somethin' Else production.

GREAT podcast

So well researched and presented. The difference in empathy and approach to journalism in comparison to similar American ones is stark.

Excellent series

Compulsive listening, an appalling situation dealt with sensitively.
Question; why was money never mentioned at any point, either amounts paid to donors or fees charged to patients?

Gripping and educational storytelling

This podcast was such a powerful piece of storytelling. The investigative angle and immersive storytelling was so powerful. I really respected the depth the team have gone to whilst also maintaining an admirable level of sensitivity. Great work. Such an important story to tell. Women and couples generally need to be more aware of things like this so we can be more informed about how to spot best and improper practise. The interviewees deserve respect for their openness, honesty and humour. Thanking you all.

Fascinating

The story is fascinating, but the way it is edited and executed is more manipulative than I care for.

Poorly organised

This series is interesting, but is very disorganised and lacks any real journey or development other than “isn’t it awful this happened?” (Which, of course, it is).

Fascinating and emotional

I am real drawn into this documentary on a subject I had known nothing about , some of the interviews are heart rending. The production team seem empathetic in their pursuit of the story

Horrendous story, not done justice by this podcast

This podcast might have worked better had people been interviewed in their mother tongue; this might have added depth and clarity to people’s stories, too — too often I get the impression that the extent of their experiences and the complexity of their feelings and emotions aren’t really coming out in the interviews because they lack the vocabulary to express themselves in English with any great depth.
Particularly the interview with the mother is excruciating in that respect: it sounds like she has a lot to say, but between her and her husband’s broken English, all that comes out is that she was “misused” in childhood and then “misused” by the fertility doctor, followed by an English interviewer who assumes the woman might have felt abused. The rest of the episode is the mother speaking in a mostly incomprehensible mix of languages; she speaks a lot, but I don’t understand what she’s trying to say.
That’s not her fault, it’s the English podcast producers not doing the poor woman any justice here.
I really think this horrific story should have been approached in the way This American Life does with guests whose mother tongue isn’t English, or Deutschlandfunk Einhundert does with guests for whom German isn’t the native language: focus on the people and their stories by interviewing them in their own language, then have the narrator give the translation. This would have provided guests and listeners with more dignity, depth and clarity.
The fact that this podcast does the reverse is, in my opinion, an injustice.
The producers should have been there to serve and accommodate the people – most of them victims – at the heart of this story, but appear to have done the opposite.
This feels wrong, exploitative even, and results in a podcast more shallow than it should have been, that’s at times hard to follow.

Compelling

This is a strange and extraordinary story, and the podcast is very well produced. It’s much more than a crime drama: fascinating questions arise about ethics and the relationship between people and their parentage.
