Detective Superintendent Andy Cox

Detective Superintendent Andy Cox

Time: 29:24
A special edition of Streets Ahead, in which Laura travels to the Isle of Wight to meet Detective Superintendent Andy Cox for day one of his nationwide challenge to cycle and run 30 miles a day for a week, raising awareness of road danger, and money for charity RoadPeace.
Andy is on a mission to drive a culture change around roads policing and road danger, having this week revealed, via the Times, a major shakeup in how police record contributory factors in road collisions, which revealed speeding as the number one cause of crashes, contributing to three times more collisions in Manchester and London where a pilot took place. He's pushing data-led policing, taken from his time investigating murders, having targeted the most dangerous roads and drivers in his time as head of Vision Zero in London's Metropolitan Police, and is having a huge impact in his goal of tackling what he insists we call road crime.
Andy's challenge is all about raising funds for a charity that does a huge amount of good with not a lot of funding. He's hoping to raise double - or more - than last year, at least £100,000, and police forces around the country are taking part in their own challenges to help the charity help even more people whose lives are changed by road crime.
From a clifftop near Lands End, having just fallen waist deep into a nettle-covered rock crevice with a half-eaten cheese sandwich, Laura introduces us to Andy's challenge - while Ned's somewhere in Italy covering the Giro d'Italia, and Adam's working away on the West Midlands' cycling and walking transformation.

Number 1 Active Travel podcast

The number one podcast to keep informed on the latest in active travel news and legislation in the UK. We have a long way to move the dial as cars are still used far too much for short journeys - instead of walking or cycling, but this podcast is helping to highlight projects and initiatives to support / promote an active travel culture in the UK. The hosts are passionate and informative about the topic, being keen cyclists/walkers themselves.

Great Podcast on all things Active Travel

Always a good listen and gives you hope that the UK may actually inch it’s way in the right direction towards embracing active travel

Topical podcast about walking and cycling

Great podcast from three distinct personalities discussing different aspects of how street design is changing post pandemic to better support cycling and walking. Each week has a different topic, often with special guests. Hope to see this show continue to settle into a format and regular schedule, and to carry on covering news and topics as the revolution in streetspace usage continues.

Rethinking our streets!

A really interesting and thought provoking podcast on what is such an important topic. The three of you are entertaining in the way you present as well. Keep up the good work! 👍 Finally an apology, I think I have given you 1,2,3,4 and 5 star ratings. This is pure ineptitude on my part, I meant to give you five, but fumbled my iPhone! 🙄

The UK’s equivalent to War on Cars

I’d very much describe Streets Ahead as being the UK’s equivalent to War On Cars and it does a similar contextualisation of active travel transport policy in an engaging way.
But it falls down in that it very rarely goes north of London and it only really speaks to London-focussed policy people, rather than speaking to people from up and down the country about active travel.
Too much obsessing about LTNs too; we’ve had them for years up here in the north west, but never branded them and had a big backlash.

Insightful and informative

The topics and content on this podcast are really great and thought-provoking; my only issue is that one of the hosts inhales VERY loudly, directly into the microphone, every few seconds whenever he’s talking. It’s really uncomfortable and distracting from the otherwise excellent subject matter, and really ought to be fixed either at the editing stage or with better sound equipment.

Engaging, challenging and inspiring discussion of Active Travel

Excellent podcast that picks great topics around Active Travel as well as updates on the current progress or otherwise in the UK in improving our urban environments. Presenters work very well together and don’t shy away from discussing some of the objections and controversy cashed by some of the changes, really trying to understand the other point of view.

Enjoyable listen

Interesting topics discussed around active travel with a conscious decision to try not to be too London focused all the time.
Really recommend episode 22 with Isabelle Clement from Wheels 4 Wellbeing 👏🏼

Positivity

After living in Waltham Forest through the introduction of Mini Holland I’ve seen the hysteria from those resistant to change first hand, but the traffic calming measures have definitely had a positive impact for the community.
So the backlash against recent schemes is nothing new. This is an interesting podcast discussing challenges to active travel that attempts to cut through the noise.
Highly recommended for those concerned about car culture and interested in active travel.

Lovely podcast

This is a superb podcast discussing all the exciting new developments in active travel in the UK.
What I really love is that is makes us folk who are passionate about the benefits of active travel (myself having lived in The Netherlands for 5 years) feel that we are not alone in our demands. We are in fact part of a growing community who are going to make the world a better place! Laura, Ned and Adam are at the centre of making that happen, by discussing the latest issues and giving us all a space to reflect and do things better.
So THANK YOU for all you do ♥️♥️♥️ 🌳🚶🏼‍♂️🧑🏾‍🦽🌳🚲🌳☀️☀️🌈🌈

Excellent listening experience

I’m really enjoying listening to all the episodes of this Podcast. The speakers are well informed and put their points across brilliantly. I hate how social media gets so polarised about this topic, but this podcast allows for much more nuanced discussion, and often points out that it’s not about being on one “side” or the other but working together. I’m a mum of 4 and have been into active travel for about 10 years since my eldest child was born, as we believe as a family it’s so important for all of us and the planet. I think this is thought-provoking listening even if you’re not into active travel though. Keep up the good work!

Unfortunately had to stop listening.

Have really enjoyed this podcast but had to stop listening to the episode Tranche 2 due to the annoying habit of Laura of speaking over and interrupting her fellow presenters. Found myself shouting at the radio in the van whilst driving - oooo, just shut up, please! The content is fascinating and above and beyond what I understand with regards to government policies so that has been interesting learning about it but PLEASE stop Laura interrupting.

Fantastic

This has got me through lockdown! Without usual networking and chatting opportunities, this podcast has filled a really important gap. Lots of variety in topics covered and sensible, modern viewpoints. Including political manoeuvrings such as Andrew Gilligan influence - useful to know ! Vital for transmitting messages and attack/defence lines to the cycling community e.g. Bike is Best polling. Good to change the format up too with different lengths of interviews etc. Would love to hear Laura talk more about Milan!

An honest and candid review of the UK’s Active Transport opportunities, challenges and failures

Adam, Laura and Ned have quiet possibly created the podcast every driver stuck in traffic, every cyclist pedalling around, every pedestrian, everyone riding a bus, train or tram....hang on a minute, every person should listen to this. We’re all people after all, regardless of how we choose to move around, and this podcast appraises these choices.
The world’s faced some crazy challenges in 2020, and just majoring on the healthcare implications of an unprecedented global pandemic, reimagining the way we use the built environment around us could help in so many ways to support the economy, support health and wellbeing, free space on roads for essential services and challenge UK’s default Car Culture by preventing viable alternatives within cities who are ready and willing to make changes (not all are...so why not let cities which are lead the way). Thanks for pulling this together 😀

Another top episode

Very thought provoking again.
And yet again, I am with Ned. My childhood experience mirrors his (until the ZX Spectrum appeared, anyway..!).
I also wish local authorities would just do stuff. Ask for forgiveness, not permission...

Interesting Podcast…

…summing up where we are with the bicycle in these times of the Coronavirus extremely well. I do wonder if the trio are preaching to the converted however. A podcast that needs to be listened to by people other than those who probably will listen. Recommended!
